Being a bricky myself and just setting up on my own after 20 years experience. Takes alot of confidence and knock backs. And can be quite daunting. Ur great at what u do mate and u can see ur a pro. All the best. Great vid

It might not be interesting to some people with regards to content. Meaning seeing him actually building, but this is the first step. Without understanding the drawings how are you meant to understand the build? It will be interesting to see the build come to life from that drawing and I find it personally quite satisfying seeing something come from the paper to reality. It’s genuinely a beautiful thing. I work in administration and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying it but there seems to be a few who also don’t do a trade that just enjoy it for the simple fact of seeing something grow, from the ground up. When Charlie did the new build site, there were instances there where he would refer to the drawings briefly without going into too much detail; more than likely because he was onsite and busy. It’s actually nice to see what other work goes on in the background and what goes on upstairs when a builder is actually building. I enjoyed this video.

This is the bit the once over lightly channels do not bother to let you know, but it is very insightful to see the work and the thinking that goes into every job. The is the bit that the troops do not get to see either and why you deserve the big bucks. Great video Charlie. Thanks you.

As a side comment from my other one, there are a few things I’d find quite interesting to see if you could edit these into the build video. These might sound like ridiculous suggestions but I’ll throw them out there. Could we have a side by side shot of the drawing and your actual build as you go along. 1) brick and block work 2) steel work 3) cavity and insulation examples 4) any discrepancies in the drawings and what you build to over come those problems. 5) elevation drawings to finished product. Just a few things I’d find interesting since I’m not a builder with explanation from the drawings in real time on site, even if just short snippets.

That's cool interesting to see drawings from a different trade. I was a mechanical engineer when I drew up drawings in my trade the tolerances much smaller but I bet when you measure your building I bet you tolerances are much more accurate than people think . look forward to the next clip .Andy

Good educating video only thing I’d say Charlie is after 30 yrs in game and many run ins with architects I like to stay away from scaling cause they all cover there arses by saying ‘do not scale from these drawings’

Yep totally agree then don’t want to know when you try to explain that the measurements don’t work. Structure engineers ain’t no better pass the buck between each other

@charlie be careful when scaling off measurements from drawings.... it’s not recommended to scale off. Use figured dimensions only. Go back to client and tell them give you the information you require. I noticed that drawing didn’t say the the scale on a page size. For instance the drawings could have been plotted on an A3 size sheet on Autocad or Revit etc but was then printed on an A1 drawing ( size on this video). This will throw your scale out.

I usually measure it all up solid through all doors and windows then that covers cost for all the pissing about and I was always told doors and windows don't build themselves, then had the extras onto the list

An estimator/QS will take off directly from drawings and enter the data into a 'estimation spreadsheet'. I mark up the drawings after I've measured. That way I know that if something's not marked the up, it's not measured. You're pricing labour only?

Charlie, 6min20secs in with the wall measurements . Using one wall length minus another to get another measurement - don’t forget the measurements are internal so you also need to add on the thickness of the wall to give you the overall length that you are trying to find 👍🏻

British Archtects are so lazy at putting dimensions on drawings , in Germany they are on there the amount of time scaling Brit drawings takes a while but fair play to you , you know with a scale rule when you think how much the Architects get paid but on most drawings it does say scale but warns you it’s not accurate

Reading drawings your mind has to translate from 2D to 3D most architects struggle with this.
