Do it!! I bought a run down drug house two years ago and have been renovating it from the ground up. It is the most rewarding, challenging, frustrating and wonderful thing I've ever had the chance to do. I would highly recommend it. I have learned so much. Soon it will be my home. Buy the cheapest, crappiest house you can in the nicest place you can. You'll build it right, because you'll build it twice, as they say!

Thanks Liam, I have already done a lot of interior work on my current house - but nothing such as bricklaying. Your advice is spot on, I bought my current house 8 years ago as a filthy wreck, it was the cheapest house in a good street and I have doubled my money and have not wasted a fortune in rent! I want to look for somewhere in Spain or Italy, preferably with some land. I am planning to retire soon and can’t wait to get started.

You and Liam Grinton are already doing it right because you're following the number 1 rule: buy the shittiest house in the best area. The area you're in is worth 10x the house when it comes to your happiness -- if you live in a mansion but in a shit area, you'll be miserable. I'm about half your age but plan to do same thing somewhere in London zone 1, I'm thinking of buying an old factory/warehouse and doing it up myself.

AJ , go for it. It was not as easy as I thought and the money was a problem but it paid off in the end. I too never learned so much in my life, I ended up teaching myself plumbing and installed all my own pipe work and radiators, only got the gas fitter to do the boiler and hob. Also did the kitchen and installed my own shower with no leaks. The best advice I can give is to take your time and don’t let anyone hurry you. Loads of great instructional videos here if you are stuck.

Also, take all the free advice you can get, but don’t commit to bathroom or kitchen styles until near the end (especially if you plan to sell) as things change so quickly.

Bricklaying is very hard physical work. When you guys watch this videos. All your seeing are guys just laying a few bricks, taking there time etc. But reality is if you don’t more your ass all day, you’ll go broke. Bricklaying is very rewarding, but not as relaxing as the videos out there.

i agree raff thats why i have shown video of my rolling around in mud on rainy days working in the footings on site with wellies on, i like to show all aspects of the job its not easy and i wont say it is but its rewarding

En mi zona marcamos la medida del ladrillo más la junta vertical para que queden todas las juntas iguales. Previamente replanteamos el ladrillo para ver cuántos caben por hilada, y aumentamos o disminuimos el grosor de la junta para que siempre entren piezas completas y medias piezas, nunca trozos
