Glenn you and me would have got on well I'm 65, you are spot on when you say about using a smaller trowel, you have much more control and it took me a while to realize this. I was working with a chap on the line for the first time and I remember thinking that's a small trowel you've got there, well I've never seen a bloke lay bricks as fast and neat he was using your method. The other blokes said don't be embarrassed he does it to all of us. Anyway I really enjoyed the video and the humour keep it up....

Decades ago I was a trained bricklayer in the US, but found an easier way to make money by selling products. The way I was trained, is the way they do it in the UK, where you have a big trowel and spread the mud in long swaths. I was taught to spread the mud the perfect height so that there was no tapping, only pressing slightly, then the excess that was squeezed out was used to butter the head joint on the brick you just laid. I could see where the German method would be better, because with the small trowel you are not lifting as much weight and getting your arm worn out. Putting the mud in the bucket to keep it from drying out is another good idea. It also saves time of having to put water on the mud board and constantly re hydrating the dried out mortar.

That's a nice height to work at-about 9-12 courses.Dip and pick is a good system too.I can see it's a cavity wall,so it's a course that doesn't need ties incorporated into the b/w.Nice video.I'm 64 and still laying 'em.

Ben Croft kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZvbe2t3jbtrjNU when your doing your next private job try using the tubs and a smaller trowel you’ll go even faster . Very relaxed way of bricklaying . Note the Dutch guy nearest you in the video how relaxed he is . He’s holding the trowel in a very relaxed manner not choking it. The brick they are laying are 50 mm high that’s why they can use the push joint . The trowel he is using is an Arnhem trowel .

When I was in my early 20's I worked in Bremen Germany with 3 other lads all from the uk. We were building houses. One Saturday 3 Dutch guys turned up they took the outside wall of one elevation whilst we were on the adjacent elevation. They used this method and they creamed us. They were finished an hour before us. Since then I've been using this method. Too much time waisted spreading muck the whole length. I've proved the point over and over to other lads, yet they still insist on spreading the whole length lol.

The having materials all up higher part has really opened my eyes! Although I will say you really *shouldn't* be tapping the bricks down anyway until you start getting around about chest height. The bed should be laid so that you can gently push the brick home with your finger tips, as you're doing here. If you're doing a load of taps on every brick at every height you are kinda doing it wrong.

Love your work, thanks for the advice, I will take it on board. In our country down under on sites they do not drink alcohol while working. It's against the law, customers have noticed a few crooked walls. It would not be a good time to get tipsy. What if brick layers are on high rise buildings? Could this be a risk? I don't drink- I dare say that's a good thing. Therefore I rest my case.

Wet the boards up good and don’t put loads of mortar on them and they do good. The problem comes when you don’t use the mortar fast enough and the new mortar gets put on top of the old.Did you go to work in that suit?
@johnkassel85665 жыл бұрын
You'd have a problem working with a left handed bricky as we tend to work forwards - no bum fights in the middle. And those bricks are designed to be laid frog up. But I'm with you on the Dutch method. Best used with a rounded Dutch trowel.

Well done lads great video and banter. It’s very very hard to convince long bed layers that this is the best method to use when bricklaying. As you say in the video it struck you that the Germans Brickys were quicker than you because of the method they used .The majority of the worlds bricklayers use the method you demonstrated . It’s mostly Bricklayers from English speaking country’s that use the long bed method. There is a very good bricklayer on KZbin called robsonger who uses this method but he works off mortar boards and uses an 11 inch trowel which I believe causes him to be not as quick as he should be when using this method. Your 100% correct when you point out that it’s best to work out of mortar bins or tubs and use a small trowel . The whole thing is a system ,small trowel, mortar tubs , keeping the brick up off the ground and going to the wall with mortar and brick at the same time . 👍
@glennveness6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your positive comments mate. I hope I didn't come across as being arrogant in the video. It's just that I want young bricklayers to know about this method. Knocking up mortar if it's drying up is a lot easier in a bin, than on a spot board, when the brickwork invariably gets splashed. Thanks again buddy
@brickbybric6 жыл бұрын
glenn veness no Glenn the opposite in fact . There is another video on KZbin of an American guy using the method your demonstrating . Another lad left a comment relating a humorous story he had heard of 2 American bricklayers that were put together on site . One guy named bob that uses the long bed method and another guy named Jim that uses your Dutch / German method the Americans refer to it as pick and dip or New England style. So the story go,s like this . Bob starts laying out his long bed furrowing and fiddling with the mortar etc trying to get it bang on . Meanwhile Jim has 3 or 4 brick put down while bob is still busy laying out his bed . Bob having never seen Jim’s style of bricklaying shouts over to him asking what in hells name is he doing and Jim reply’s laying bricks bob what are you doing.

I was a top level bricklayer qualified in 1976 after an almost 4 year apprenticeship and could lay an average of 650 bricks a day laying bricks the conventional way. building a standard building with no internal corners. doing my own very neat pointing {much neater than you see here.} that's 93 bricks an hour over 7 hours of work. 23 bricks in 15 mins including building corners. Glen has some good points in what he says, but having bricks up that high and working out of a bucket has some advantages and some disadvantages. at the end of the day I think I would of laid as many if not more bricks than Glen did. I did have my spots on two concrete blocks to save on the bending down, but sorry no way is laying mortar for one brick quicker than laying for a few at a time.
