I met a drunk Garda when I was a teenager who refused to stamp some paperwork I needed. He asked me had *I* been drinking (I'm a teetotaler). I crumpled up the paper and threw it at him before getting tf out of there. As stereotypical as it may sound I do think they actually drink on the job.

As an Irish man (and Dubliner) this is embarrassing but not at all surprising - the Gardai think they are a law unto themselves but you owned them! The first caveman thinking he can just assault you (as they do, believe me...) and the other two lushes on their way back from the pub - what a joke they are. I just drove by here not 20 minutes ago 😅 Those two out of uniform should absolutely have presented ID when asked if they were looking to stop you, but to give some defence to them, they probably didn't see the need since they weren't giving orders or detaining you. As opposed to some UK police that immediately bellow about terrorism offences and so on or the US police who are scared out of their minds of the public. No excuse for that fkucing slob at the start though, embarrassing. Side note, the full name of the force is An Garda Síochána (Guardians of the Peace) which is what your one said to you earlier when denying seeing the slob. Garda (singular) or Gardaí (plural) is the shorthand. Looking forward to seeing more.

The thing with my experiences of ireland is the people are really great fun. You can never follow a plan but something better usually happens. There up for the "crack". Better avoid them than antagonise them, if you don't know that to start with. Don't be fooled by the fact that in some respects they much more closely resemble their UK counterparts than Continental eg they don't carry guns as standard. The state here has it's own take on security issues that is completely separate from what cops in the UK like to call the 'current climate'.

You better inform yourself about public photography in other countries before you go there. Not every country has the same relaxed law about it like the UK and USA. In Germany, for example, you can get nicked for photographing police officers and I believe the same applies to The Netherlands. A couple of years ago I was on a shopping trip to Belgium and the coach driver had to produce all sorts of paperwork to a cop on a motorbike. Someone wanted to take a photo of the bike and the cop told him not to do that.
