My siblings, cousin, and I could not stop laughing cause the line was so dumb and the kid's acting was so bad. 😂😂 I also remember feeling totally gypped by this movie cause the title made me think it was some epic fantasy movie like Neverending Story.....but it wasn't.

Here are my thoughts. This one has the more realistic aspects of the book. Leslie feels more human in the 1985 version compared to the 2007 counterpart, she seemed super perfect, sort of like a Barbie doll. (Nothing against AnaSophia Robb) She gave the performance the script instructed her to. However, in the 2007 version you really get to see the kids imagination come to life. (With cheesy effects I mind you, but still) an aspect of missing that I personally dislike in this version is where they all go to church and Leslie joins them despite being agnostic. In 2007 and actually shows his father being hard on him. And they had more time because it was a theatrical release. When Jesse asks his dad if Leslie is going to hell and his dad has the conversation with him it always makes me cry. But because of time constraints they completely skipped the church portion of the book which is my personal favorite part. (I’m a Christian) I do love when media discusses themes of religion, God, Jesus, etc. I like this version, but I prefer the 2007 version in spite of its cheesiness. But I like this one too for what it is, no adaptation will get a book perfect. But each version whether it’s the 1985 version or the 2007 version both bring something to the table. I do think if they were to ever do this again for a modern day retailing they should make it at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours long in length. I feel like we could get every single aspect of the story done extremely well. But whether it’s the book, the 1985 adaptation or the 2007 film “Bridge to Terabithia” will always have a special place in my heart. I feel like no matter which way I consume it I can take some thing from each version of the story being told.

According to the author, the closest approximation to the real events on which the story is based is the 2007 movie. Leslie is not an agnostic, but an angel.

Both movies have their pros and cons. -2007 in version, Leslie is beautiful, while the "original" one, supposed to even been mistaken by a boy. A lot of the plot is changed or taken in a different direction. But the good thing, what really made us cry. Is of how good the actors portrait the characters, they did a really good job with the acting and the chemistry between both of them. That's why you could felt the lose that Jess had at the end... -1985 version, is more faithful to the book, though it misses a lot of plot, it even feels rushed. And the acting is terrible! In 2007 one, it was as a daily normal interaction. The 1985 was as if they were reading the script on screen. Would be nice to see a 3rd movie combining the best of each movie!

The 2007 movie, from the point of view of the author of the book, is closer to the real events on which the story was based. The original manuscript, in which a girl died from a lightning strike, was never published and the writer was told to redo everything because “no one would believe it.” The script was written by her son. Leslie is an angel, and angels, as you know, have no gender.

Objectively, the 2007 film has better acting, story, and mostly understanding of the characters. But I think the original has a better depiction of Leslie (Not to say I don't adore AnnaSophia Robb in the 2007 film) and has a well-grounded atmosphere. Clearly there is a great movie between the two, I would love to see another adaptation taking the elements that worked in the previous two.

This Leslie is more accurate to the book. In the book, when Jess first meets Leslie, he couldn't even tell if Leslie was a boy or a girl. In the 2007 version, they just made Leslie a quirky girl who acts tomboyish. Which is fine too, a lot of boys loved her, making her death more impactful. But wasn't super accurate to the book.

But I always cry in the 2007 version when Jesse and his dad have the conversation about Leslie towards the end. When it happened in this version it didn’t hit as hard. I’m not bashing this Version. I think they do a better job of humanizing both the main characters. Leslie was like a literal Barbie doll in the 2007 one. Here she actually comes off like an actual person. Neither of the adaptations really does great justice to the novel from 1977, a huge favorite of mine, but I'd pick the 1985 TV movie version as my preference despite all its flaws mainly because it better captures the awkwardness and isolation of being different as a kid and of finding solace in a kindred spirit. The 2007 version is a little too slick for me with all the extra CGI add-ins that add little to the story. I wonder what the opinion is of other people like me who've loved the book and read it long before seeing any of the film versions.

It's really hard to know how to treat / relate to / swallow / get over / compartmentalise films and/or stories like this. Ham-acted and abbreviated and simplified though this slightly-creaky 1985 version may be, it has its power! Not sure what it does to kids who watch it, but clearly an adult who indulges does so as adult and former kid at one and the same time and sees and experiences all kinds of "tricky stuff". Engineering a story like this might seem cynical or even exploitative, though we know writer Katherine Paterson had a real-life reason for doing it ... and of course kids do sometimes die, and its always tragic, and somehow a tainting experience for all. I must say that as a young lad (I guess a bit younger than these shown here) I did have a regular and fairly intense fantasy-play relationship with a girl, and one that was occasionally joined (one might say at times obstructed) by my younger sister. Kids are nice-not nice creatures, and there were some mixed feelings there that we rightly push down as we put away childish things, and that is where they should stay. Luckily (?) for me, I never QUITE fell in love with the girl involved (though I am sure surrounding adults believed I had), and - thanks be to God - there were no tragedies involved. So that friendship just kind of faded away, which is not an especially satisfactory ending. indeed, all such relationships end in an unsatisfactory way, as - even if Leslie had lived and ultimately married Jess - the relationship based on childhood would most likely fail in adult life. Given that another alternative is a collapse into anger or resentment - an awful fate for something so precious - the only thing left is to freeze those past shared moments in (past) time. And that begs the question as to how precious that magic is, or in fact how much of a burden? It is well known that this story draws on CS Lewis, and doubtless shares its Christian motivations, at times delivered clunkily. Lewis maybe was too naive to know, or alternatively entirely astute enough to know, that many boys would fall for the temptations of the "Lion, Witch and Wardrobe" Queen of always-winter-but-never-Christmas with her willingness to offer "Turkish delight" to the easily-tempted Edmund (i.e. also me), whom she so readily turned on, hurt and rejected when he had served his purpose. So we see here - in the most brutal and unsubtle of styles - how Jess's first move away from innocence into sexualised adulthood with his crush on a pretty teacher (Annette O'Toole by then in her early 30s and playing a role with ludicrous amounts of closeness and tactile interaction by our 2021 sandards) is clearly and instantaneously associated with his ABSOLUTE and irrevocable loss of the pure noble (in fact "kingly") and childish-fantasy but also true and even perfect-sharing love he had for Leslie. That is a cruel torment for a boy just "doing what comes naturally" and begs all kinds of tough questions about spiritual versus earthly things. But then some condemn CS Lewis utterly for his exiling of the "no longer a friend" Susan Pevensie from Narnia and from many beautiful and noble adventures because she was too adult, and becoming keen on things like fashion and makeup. Ultimately, Lewis had her living on - but denied her return to Narnia (aka heaven) because she did not die in a train crash unlike the other three. The parallels with Terabithia (as opposed to TerabiNthia in the Chronicles of Narnia) are clear enough, and uncomfortable enough. Surely, Jesus tells us we have more chance of eternal life if we are more childlike and that's fair enough, but we can't eschew adulthood altogether, can we? Paradoxically, or not, the only ways out of this are to not attach too much significance to either perfectly innocent earthly things (as they are by definition transient) or far-less-innocent earthly things (also ephemeral and apparently linked up with the idea that all sin ultimately leads to death). But that certainly is a lot of tough and tricky stuff for 55 minutes of children's film...

Never knew this as a kid, already too old by 1977. Of course knew the Narnia series that somehow fits in with this, including overtly as Leslie knew of the books and recommended them to Jess - when it came to how to be a King while still a child! Only today did I come across the 2007 version, which probably made bad mistakes with the CGI add-ons, but which resembled its predecessor in breaking my heart over my thinking how Jess could possibly have felt, losing Leslie. Yet my comment here in the wake of that is the same as below - there is no beautiful way out of a first childhood romance with one foot in fantasy and one in reality, all the more so when nascent sexuality begins to creep in. There could be no perfect ending for Jess and Leslie, as what they shared was TOO close, TOO precious, TOO innocent. The reality of it was so strong that the world cannot sustain it, so a link with fantasy is inevitable. But anyone with a heart and a soul cries with that recognition, and I did. I still do not know if Paterson and the two sets of film-makers are torturers for developing this story for us, or inspired geniuses for knowing how well and fully to handle the reality of the human condition. While the book is Christian (but also deplored by some Christians), it only hints at the reality that the only deep and satisfying and unchangingly precious and close-to-perfect relationship a human being can have is with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Everything else that is worldly but also seemingly perfect cannot be sustained. That is the way of things.

Thank you for this comment, there really is a lot of reference in the book to C.S. Lewis

@@aeronautilus3565 Thank you too! Although, it looks from the above as if I am replying to myself, I am not (quite) that full of myself! In fact, somebody had made a referece to the two versions of the film, which I then checked out. Somebody has since deleted their post, or had it deleted which I find a tad irritating, because it leaves things in a kind of vacuum that was not there originally... I have no particular skin in this game, but I feel what I feel, and see what I see, and all of it comes with the help of the beloved Holy Spirit...

@@sidpheasant7585 That's interesting, it really felt like you were responding to yourself. But this happens, sometimes people delete comments. It's good to know that I have a brother guided by the Holy Spirit in this video, I would like to talk more.

@@aeronautilus3565Well, you're welcome. I suppose an interest in Lewis might predestine you to have something in common with me, but the Holy Spirit is a very special topic, in fact nothing now on this Earth can be more special, except for the one whose the Spirit is wanting us to herald...

It's supposed to feel dirty and gritty. They ate poor rural folks except the Bukes. This is how the 70s were, at least in rural areas.
