This is an awesome idea and concept.

I might try to get a GPIO expander involved and teach an Arduino how to play drums....maybe....when I build up enough prototypes to make a kit.

At a certain point some calendar years ago, when I felt I had generally mastered music production, I started making music by simply pinging an input that was routed to its own output with a little "pulse". When that was routed to another output an ADSR could be applied. That was about as pure of electronic music as seemed possible. Thankfully it seems I was on the right track as confirmed by this. The 808 is truly the ZEN TEMPLE drum of electronic music.

Man, everything you do is crazy impressive.

I hope soon I can get better set up for more elaborate things

I did'nt understand a word of that. LOL. But the results are awesome.

Came for electronics knowledge, stayed for the drum circle at the end.

At one stage it sounded a bit like the background track from Forbidden Planet. Very nice!

Ooooooohhhh! Was that a White noise filter sweep included in that circuit to make the crowd raise their hands up preparing while for the launch?

really nice! what is the white noise at the end on the higher pitch?

Thanks for posting those board gerber files! Can anybody with a subwoofer confirm that sounds like an 808 bass drum at some potentiometer setting in that video? Considering getting one of those boards.

being more aware of dsp than EE, i've heard roland circuit bent a few of these to get some extra timbral effects, eg. affecting the attack, generating odd harmonics for a more triangular shape, different 808s have some skewed waveforms. awesome :)

Yeah I've read that different 808's can sound different from component tolerances or production substitutions. I have seen some info out there about hacking/improving the basic circuits like combining more waveforms to get more complex versions of the sounds compared to just the one oscillator, and various circuits for envelope shaping to give the volume some attack/decay variations instead of just on/off tones and noises approximating a snare etc. Lots of experimenting opportunity.

Is a "pulse" to "trigger" simply applying voltage really quickly to that input wire? And does the drum circuit store energy while waiting for that?

So a phase shift where every oscillation wave cycle matches the main wave cycle? (de-jargonizing)
