Why doesn’t the owners of this canal dam up the two collapsed ends with some kind of coffer dam system letting the rest of the canal to fill up so everyone can get their boats moved or at least floating. The coffer dams could be easily put in the canal away from the breach allowing for the breach part to be rebuilt.

Rather than sending heavy equipment down the canal bed as suggested, I would send it up from downstream across the sediment plain, collecting sediment on the way in to reuse as fill, through the breech and to the coffer dam construction sites from below. The only problem I see with approaching from downstream is that the sheet piling is in the way on the far side. Another plus is that canals are pretty good for transporting fill, so perhaps higher quality fill can be brought in by barge.

Its good to see the local community is helping you out during this disaster. Having lived in a colder country than the UK you will have major problems when that hose pipe freezes up overnight if you get -8 degrees or more, I recommend that you keep the water flowing through the hose all the time ,that will stop it freezing and the nightmare of trying to melt the ice in that long hose..GOOD LUCK..

Love to be a fly on the wall in the boardroom at Peel Holdings. How to wriggle out of this mess; arguing with insurers over whether the collapse of the embankment was an act of god or down to slipshod maintenance; probably also having to foot a large bill for River Bollin culvert; plus certainty of being made to do a safety survey of every asset on every inch of their waterways uncovering a new can of worms. Peel bosses can kiss goodbye to their bonus. And they thought they were getting a good deal with acres of juicy real estate around the Ship Canal.

Its amazing and beautiful to see the community coming together...proves it can still happen. The waterway communities need all the support they can get... as it doesn't come from crt or those in charge as it should !!! Hooray for the normal good folk who come to help. Thanks for the drone footage n allowing us to see somtjing quite amazing really.. scary. I hope ur all ok n can get things safe n warm .

I remember the snow drifts in London in 83 Andy, it lasted about 3 months your exactly right! Loved every day of it as a 9 year old lad with my makeshift Sledge, and school was off for ages! Lets hope this weather front is not as long lol! Keep your spirits up guys!! Bye for now!

It's funny as we hardly ever got snow where Andy and I were bought up in Southampton so it was a treat to see it and make snowmen and snowball fights with my brother who is sadly not with us anymore

I recommend you remove all snow off of your vehicle. It just makes you and other drivers safer. All the best to you and your friends

That lack of foresight is typical Dunning-Kruger that is rampant these days.

Thanks Josh sorry to see you are going though this ruff winter . Glen here from the west coast of Canada just outside of Victoria. It’s been interesting here as well this winter . You and your family and neighbors on the canal stay safe. We watch you and the progress daily

One could argue that the drainage has exposed weaknesses in the canal that wouldn't be otherwise evident and offers an opportunity to greatly extend its lifespan.

As an idea for toilet onboard, especially at night: get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. Put a toilet seat over during use. Keep it lidded otherwise: outside even. Take to empty in port-a-potty in morning and evening. Just a thought. Put about 1 litre of water in the bottom before use to cut down on odours. Camp toilet in northern ontario when bears are about and you have to go at night:)

Luckily we do have a spare cassette toilet on board that we used on the Thames as all their pump out toilets were broken so we should be okay thanks

What’s so amazing to me is this network of canals is so unique when you think about it because it was such an advanced innovation in transportation and engineering when it was laid out 300 years ago. No place in the world that Ik of has a man made canal network like this, even places like Amsterdam and Venice are absolutely nothing like this network of over 2 thousand miles of usable canals. My guess is it creates problems that are completely unique to itself because there is nothing like it anywhere to use as a reference. When you think of canals around the world many people think of Amsterdam but really people should be thinking of Britain. Absolutely amazing. Literally one giant historical monument.
