The nanomole was the first quantity defined in terms of the SSI scale. This was done by defining/ measuring it's reporting error (10 picomoles). This was done in 1984 and published in 1985: 'Determination of picomole amounts of glycerate 3- phosphate, glycerate 2-phosphate, and phosphoenol pyruvate by an enzymatic asssay coupled to firefly luciferase/ luciferin luminescence' Lilley et al Analytical Biochemistry vol 148 (85).
