Great video! As a student of French, I always wondered why the French language is so much harder and more confusing than Spanish, considering that they're both Romance/Latin languages and France and Spain are right next to one another geographically. (Also, I think Spanish is definitely the closest to Classical Latin out of the two.) It's interesting to see how the individual histories of nations are reflected in their respective languages.

¡Muy interesante tu vídeo! I think you did quite a good summary of the languages in Spain and how Spanish became what it is now today. I would like to add that in the territories of Southern Iberia ruled by different muslim rulers, we could say the population spoke two languages :arabic and mozarabic. This second language developed from Latin like Spanish, but was heavily influenced by Arabic, spoken by the elite. In fact, it is believed that many of those loanwards that you mention came from mozarabic, and not directly Arabic. This language was named after the Christian population of these territories, who were in the position of either maintaining their christian roots or adopt the vibrant and hectic innovations of Al-Andalus. Mucha suerte y... ¡Viva el español y el inglés!

Thank you Sarah, you are an inspiration to make the most of what were limitations from the pandemic. I finished a video of the history of French on "The Traveling Linguist" website. My hope was to get the same from you showing how Latin developed into proto-Spanish, the break up of Latin into Galician, Leonese, etc. and what made them unique to each other, and finally into modern Spanish. My experience of your excellent video was one more of a political history of how Spanish became a dominant language in the world, not a real history of the [development of] Spanish Language [from Latin]. I would have enjoyed learning how Castilian and Aragonaise merged, what remained and shows in Spanish today, and what was lost. For me, I would like to learn how did Latin evolved into Spanish over the centuries. Why are there two imperfect subjunctives, which one today is used when, and where did they come from? How did Spanish develop estar and ser from Latin, the lost of the Neuter grammatical gender (except in some cases with "lo", but is that really neuter?)? I am a Slavic Linguist, and have studied how proto-Slavic developed into the modern Slavic languages, mostly focused on Russian. I invite you do that with us with Spanish. What was Spanish during the Moors like, what influences beyond vocabulary changed Spanish? Is the Spanish of Cervantes the same Spanish of Borges? This was a fun video. I do not mean to, and hope I did not, shoot you down. I encourage you to do more, and would love to get my answers to those two awful imperfect subjunctives!
