This video explores the basics of Latin American history and politics to explain why the continent still faces vast inequality that lingers from colonial times, how it develops and the problems it is currently dealing with. It begins with Spanish and Portuguese colonization, explores independence and goes all the way through democratization in the 1980s, the pink wave in the 2010s, to the present.

Why the Quebec Region ( Province) of Canada is not included? Aren't the predominantly French descendants Latinos as well?
2 жыл бұрын
Just like every region in the world (Europe, the Middle East, South Asia etc.) Latin America’s borders are somewhat arbitrary. But Quebec is never included as part of Latin America, although Haiti is. Why? I don’t think there’s a very clear answer.

@Crónica Panamericana you are clearly educated in the history of the region so your confusion kinda baffles me here. Haiti: is in the caribbean is on the island of Hispaniola was under Spanish rule for 132 years is surrounded by Spanish speaking neighbors Quebec: the other is over a thousand miles away from the nearest Spanish speaking nation. never under Spanish rule. there is also the fact that many people lump the caribbean and Latin America into the same category because there is so much historical overlap and a shared history of being on the tough side of colonization, colonialism and imperialism. while Canada was a partner to the US in its dominance over the western hemisphere post ww2 and exists as a continuance of a white settler colonial project (first nations people people exist, but you know what I'm getting at)
Жыл бұрын
@@chenzomutumbo9140 Quebec being close to Spanish speaking regions is not really what makes a place Latin America or not. Belize is surrounded by Spanish speaking countries and is usually not included in the idea of Latin America. being part of a white settler project is also not a reason to exclude a place from Latin America. Argentina and Chile are very clearly white settler projects. They even had their own versions of indigenous genocide. The closest answer is that culture, geography AND history all play into it, but it's still somewhat arbitrary, just like most regions that capture any kind of cultural dynamic are.
@chenzomutumbo9140

@Crónica Panamericana Argentina and chile were not partners in US hegemony the same way Canada was and both required coups to put fascist puppets in place, while Canada was riding shotgun with the US and the Monroe doctrine to maintain hegemony over the western hemisphere..... also Chile and Argentina both had won their independence FROM colonial powers while the US and Canada are THE CONTINUATIONS of the white settler colonialism, and imperialism.... please tell my when the CIA toppled the Canadain government into opening up their resources to US companies, again Canada was a partner. and Belize is included in Latin America despite being an English colony, when you look at any regional list that compares countries of the region, Belize is always included. Belize is further a member the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) also, I'm not saying they need to check all of the lat-am boxes I laid out... I'm saying that Haiti has much more historical overlap and that Quebec checks NONE of the boxes. I do agree with your last paragraph with all factors playing a role ...although I do think that you're stretching the degree to which it is arbitrary by quite a bit.

@@taddersauce3672 Colonialism was generally started by monarchies, so I wouldn't call that "the right". Excessive gov't or gov't by the few is a feature of the Left, not the Right. Anyways, if you analyze the books of Carroll Quigley and Anthony Sutton, you will see that the imperial elites of the Anglo-sphere (late 1800s) were the ones that funded all of the main communist/socialist revolutions to come and then installed all of the international institutions (UN, CFR, WTO, etc) as globalist steering committees to "guide" the tyrannical leaders, while the resources of those countries of course are extracted by chosen companies. Many of these tyrants are now completely controlled by globalist overseers, just as the initial RoundTables intended. So, all these communist/banana republic tyrants are actually perpetuating Imperialism as their middlemen, believe it or not. But crony/monopolistic capitalism is also a form of globalist socialism (essentially, what the USA has now installed).

The education is spot on but only question to you is why as Hispanics keep using the term Latino/s. Latinos "we are not" unless your Greek, Italian, Romanian and such which spoke a dead language known and spoken by few in the world. This terminology continues to devide and confuse people in the present. We were conquered by the Spaniards and the Portuguese. The majority speak spanish and or Portuguese not latin. We are Hispanics of Spanish/Indian decent and or Portuguese/Indian. To make another commentary adjustment, The Aztecs were only known by that name during the spanish conquest the word Aztec is simply a word removed from the Nahualt language by the spanish to describe the indigenous people of Mexico the spanish word for Aztec is Guerrero and in English is worrior nothing more. Mexico got it name from the Indians that settled in Mexico city. The mejica were nomadic people originally from mexcaltitlan de uribe Nayarit Mexico whom left in search of the eagle eating a serpant. After 300 years of traveling as North as Canada the returned to Mexico only to find the eagle eating the serpant only this time on a cactus. The tribute of knowledge left of this history is found in Nayarit Mexico where the state flag holds evidence with tribute to the people. No other city town or state bears the privilege of the eagle with the serpant only without the cactus. No other municipality in Mexico has the name of origin other than the country as a whole. We as Hispanics should embrace each other not devide because of separation of country. In the end we are Spanish and Indian or Portuguese and Indian. I'm proud of both sides of my roots. I'm 24% Indian, 56% Spanish, and 10% Portuguese. Remember everyone history is not always as it is written. Stay educated love each other and progress in enhancing yourselves.

I agree that we shouldn't use "Latino" as our identity. But nor should it be "Hispanic." This is the Spanish definition of the word: Hispanic refers to a group of people who relate to each other through the culture and traditions of Spanish origin. This definition goes well beyond the "just speaking Spanish." Someone who says that they are Hispanic implies that their country's culture and traditions are mainly of Spanish origin, and it might seem true at first glance. But the fact is that the only thing that we share with Spain is a common language. Each country has its own distinctive customs regarding culture and traditions. For example, in Central America, we celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, making a considerable part of our identity. If someone from Guatemala celebrates it and then calls himself "Hispanic," he assumes that the Dia de Los Muertos is of Spanish origin. Most central and South American cuisine has a Native American basis. Other countries, like Argentina, are overwhelmingly influenced by traditions from Italy and Germany, which is reflected in their cuisine. Let's not forget that in 300 years of Spanish rule over America, there were only 300 000 Spanish settlers for regions that, even after war and diseases, had a population in the millions of inhabitants. It was proven by genetic research that Mesoamerica and the Andes have a majority of Native American heritage. In Peru, for example, your average José is at least 2/3 indigenous. There is also a more significant component of African genetic than Spanish, which shouldn't be surprising knowing that at least 1 506 000 slaves were brought to the empire. The same can be said for the Italian and German heritage that once again, genetic studies show that 2/3 of Argentinians, for example, are manly or fully of Italian origin. The overwhelming majority of us have a Spanish name because when the Spanish converted Indians to Catholicism, they also gave us new Christian names. The other way natives were given Spanish names was through slavery, in which the name of the owner was given to the enslaved. The same was done to the African slaves. And as I said, there were only 300 000 Spanish settlers. There are very few people that can confidently claim to be a perfect Indian/Spanish mestizo. It is not to say that Spain has 0 influence over us. But it's undoubtedly just a component of the many others that make the greater American (South of Rio Grande) culture. Our culture is a mix of Native, African, European and Asian cultures. Degrees vary from country to country. In Peru, for example, the Asian component is more vital than the European one. In Uruguay, the Native culture is almost absent. That is why it is incorrect to say that we are "Hispanic."

@@nitobullon1798 regardless of the culture difference that you are describing 500 years since the conquest does change the bloodlines only the beliefs. Pride and ego always comes before the fall. That has always been man's downfall. Traditions are created as well as culture difference but when it comes down it regardlesss of people of America's distain to the Spanish DNA doesn't lie. @ Well, when you talk about how the US intervened in latin america and you say "unfortunately attempts to fight inequality or provide social goods immediatly became suspect". This is simply wrong, usually what happened was you had literal communists, and i don't mean communists like a left leaning social democrat, i mean literal communists rising up in countries with anti democratic ideas and revolutionary ideas purely for power as lots of latin america countries at the time were doing better than they are today. Either way, the US fucked up in basically making each one of those countries a dictatorship. But it wasn't because people were trying to provide social goods, they were literally carrying out terrorist attacks, kidnapping politicians, and burning places before the US intervened.

@ Also the frente amplio in Uruguay, Kirschners in argentina and Lula in Brasil i understand you say they are moderate in comparison to people like Chavez, and i agree. But they are still real leftists with many people from the frente amplio being former Tupamaros (the communist terrorist organization i was talking in my other comment), and those people literally came to power, so yeah they weren't very moderate altho i do agree it's moderate in comparison to chavez for sure. Also mostly because they weren't allowed to be as crazy as they wanted to be, the democratic systems kept them in line altho they still did some very weird and anti democratic things, specially in Argentina.

Typical western approach: start from the conquest. LA political history/issues start way before that. For instance, Inca rulers continued "living" (through a shaman, probably) even after death, thus they didn't lose their riches, possesions, political power, etc, and the new ruler had to kinda start from scratch to earn his right to rule... Sounds nice to some extent, but against a major power like the Spanish, that's bs tbh, it's another disadvantage to the list, lol. And the Inca were a new empire in the region, meaning that the peoples they had conquered would have gladly supported any form of liberation, which they did when the Spanish arrived. The inca resistance then fled to the mountains... and today is reflected in the eternal fight between coastal cities, mainly Lima, (whites and mestizos - right wing) and "everything else" (mestizos and natives - left wing). The solution? Probably end exploitation caused by globalization, or return to monke.

The idea is to cover this in a short period of time. What you just talked about occurs in a single country. And Latin America by definition cannot begin before the conquest. It exists because of colonization. Without the Europeans it would be something else entirely. It might be South America or Middle America or who knows, but it would not include the places it does from Mexico to tierra del fuego. And of course it would not be America or Latin.
