Brief Review of the Cambridge ESV Catholic Edition

I have that Cambridge ESV. My biggest gripe is the faintness of the font. It should be darker.

Interesting, I saw another reviewer comment on the darkness of the text, although he did also mention it could be inconsistent in places.

I personally find the RSV-2CE to be better than the ESV-CE. But they need to make more editions of the RSV-2CE: pocket versions in imitation leather, maybe?

I love the ESV translation EXCEPT one crucial passage. The ESV translate John 1:18 as "No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known." It is not clear that it is the Son who makes the Father known. This is especially obvious when you compare it to the RSV translation: " No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known." I know that the ESV uses the manuscripts that reflect this rendering, but there are many manuscripts that are translated to read "only Son" instead of "only God" Most other English translation use "only Son"

This is a hard topic. Personally, I prefer the official Catholic bible of my country, called "Tradução CNBB". Surprisingly, the Protestant bibles are more homogeneous here, unbelievable! :O

A tradução da CNBB é boa! Mas honestamente, me inveja essas bíblias americanas. As bíblias de lá tem aquela cara de bíblia "raiz". Aqui, tanto os católicos e protestantes inventam cada moda nas capas! Mas a tradução da CNBB é bem legal, tem um caratér mais litúrgico. Muda "homem, carne" pra "humanidade", etc. Mas isso são coisas bem pequenas. Ela mantém a tradição de manter "SENHOR" no nome divino, e tem algumas passagens que isso fica meio errado... tipo, alguém diz "senhor" se referindo a alguma pessoa, mas aparece SENHOR, como se fosse o nome divino. (1 Samuel 20:35-39). Mas o resto da tradução é excelente, acho um bom equilíbrio entre uma linguagem mais coloquial para um texto mais rebuscado. Fique com Deus!

I think you should mention that RSV You have appears to be the Second Catholic edition. I'm looking for a first edition RSV CE that has the annotations on the appropriate page rather than at the end of the Bible. Anyone know of a good edition?

Most likely if it’s like other premium bibles it will have a supple leather cover, the gilding will be top notch and the paper should be super-premium. Basically feels like silk…definitely shouldn’t feel like newspaper. Seems like maybe they skimped on the paper, and I also notice there is no art-gilt which is really just a preference thing, and idk if Cambridge does it on most of their premiums. I don’t think they really like it, but personally I think they should. You don’t really pay for artwork & font layout. Which btw, probably the best Catholic Bible in those terms is the Illustrated Catholic Bible. Personally I’d even say best over all based on what I’ve seen. Very nice paper, single column, bold text, cool 16th century illustrations (unfortunately most are too small but there are 500 of them so what are you gonna do).

Oh the illustrated catholic bible is also NRSV which imo is a greatly superior translation to ESV. ESV is literally just a bunch of evangelicals took the RSV and changed some things to suit their theology. Look it up sometime, that’s really the story of it. Granted they also update the language in places but it’s not necessarily better if you want a more traditional feel. NRSV was a significant update to the RSV. In some places the language flows a lot more smoothly due to a better understanding of the intent, it isn’t just dumbed down like in the ESV. Personally I could never trust the ESV translation.

You talk way too slow. You pay for the Cambridge name! Like comparing a cheap car to a Lamborghini! And cut out the cussing. Sheets of paper have different thicknesses and weights. Take a class on book manufacturing and then you will become more qualified to speak on the topic.

I talk slowly so people can understand me, and I can speak clearly and concisely. Also, I don't have a script, or read from a prompt, these are my raw thoughts in real time. Additionally, your critique is nonsensical, because anyone can give a review of what they've purchased with no expertise. If you are looking for an expert opinion, I'd explore elsewhere. Lastly, I wasn't aware of any cussing in this video, but then again your comment is bizarre to say the least.
