If anyone wonders why Syria (not a nuclear power) is on the list of targets, consider the Russian naval facility in Tartus. The proposal of Roger Fisher is actually quite brilliant, and the Pentagon's response to it all too telling.
@Dank-gb6jn
@Dank-gb6jn 3 жыл бұрын
Fisher’s proposal was just an example of “well I’m not man enough to make the decision so I want to restrain someone who *is* man enough”. I’d rather it be the way it is, where all the president has to do is read off the auth. codes and let fly what we must let fly. Independent units in the field would be a *little* nerve wracking, but I’d be game. We have our nukes for a reason, and they’re here to stay hopefully; they give me more security than most things do right now. The guy who has the say so of WHEN to use them is a different story though.
@sirmeowthelibrarycat

@@Dank-gb6jn 🤔 Your ‘security’ is a chimera. While the rest of humanity lives under a 24/7 threat of annihilation, proxy wars are being played out in other countries such as Iraq, Syria and Yemen. What do you imagine would happen if an ‘incident’ occurred that involved the death or deaths of personnel from the Other power? Collateral damage or friendly fire, both have already happened on more than one occasion. Perhaps a polite message in the diplomatic bag would calm things down?
@Lowmanification
@Lowmanification 3 жыл бұрын
Eh, Fisher's proposal has quite a few flaws in it, the most glaring being that a nuke could hit the white house in the time it took to retrieve and enter the codes. It also ignores the entire point of MAD, which is that there needs to be a serious risk of retaliation in order for it to work. The more likely it is that the president may not be willing to push the button, the bolder an enemy may feel in launching a nuke. That is the trickiest part about it, you want it to be relatively easy to retaliate but also secure enough to prevent accidentally responding to a false alarm. Thankfully despite some close calls we have had cool enough heads in power to avoid an accidental firing.
@ramdelosreyes5632
@ramdelosreyes5632 2 жыл бұрын
Fisher's garbage idea is just full of childish ignorance, I can't believe it actually came from an adult. His "proposal" basically appeals to the goodness/morality of people, which will only affect good-natured leaders (who ironically, are more likely to use the nukes as a defensive strategy). If you genuinely believe that Hitler, Stalin or Mao would "think twice" to butcher a person in order to control some powerful nukes, then I'm sorry sweetie but go play some more video games and wait a couple more decades until hopefully, you're mature enough to join the grownup table.
@efulmer8675

@@ramdelosreyes5632 But have any of them killed someone with their own hands? This is the point of Fisher's proposal - that if you have to do it yourself, and in one of the most gruesome ways possible, then you would be less likely to do it.

@@nathnathn And? Not to be mean, but what is the alternative? Sure, we could imagine a utopia where countries aren't constantly at each others throats, but that just isn't going to happen. No country with nukes will ever agree to fully decommission them since they are a powerful, albeit exceedingly dangerous, bargaining chip. Look up the Samson option if you want an example. Now that nukes exist, we need policies which disincentivize their use. MAD is, for all of its obvious faults, a pretty good one. At least with it the madman willing to fire a nuke has to reckon with the fact that they are sealing their own fate in the process. If you have any alternatives which don't rely on a nation having to trust in the goodwill of others, I am welcome to hear it. Foreign interference in our elections has already shown that we can't rely on that.

The fact is that it can take less than 15 minutes for a missile to move from one side of Earth to the other. Additionally, even if a lauch is seen immediately, it can take minutes to make it up the chain of command to the leader who needs to make the decision. After that, it can take a few minutes for the order to be sent and authenticated. In the case of a retaliatory strike, it also takes a couple minutes for missile operators to finish launch procedures. In the time between launch and counter launch, hesitation can completely remove the option to retaliate. I don't know if nuclear strike is justifiable in the modern world regardless of who shoots first. But if you want the option, unilateral authority is the only option.

One of the key command nodes for distributing a launch order is the STRATCOM Command Center (formerly SAC - pronounced "sack" for the North England linguistically impaired) buried under the front lawn of the old SAC Headquarters building, at Offutt Air Force Base, just south of Omaha, Nebraska. Ahaha,all humans suck.The likelihood of any sitting president ever using nuclear force is fairly laughable.The only option is for other countries to then use nuclear weapons against your country and so forth.Think logically.Its gonna really hurt any future presidents voting numbers when most of their voters are dead due to nuclear retaliation lol.So unless they were already facing the threat of an active nuclear attack,I can't really see there being justification that wouldn't tank their poll numbers.

For me, the most terrifying component of the Russian nuclear system is the Dead Hand. It is a "dead man" style firing system whereby all nuclear weapons would be automatically launched at pre determined targets if the system detects a loss of communications with the central control system or a series of radioactive, seismic or light sensors detects a first strike has occurred on Russia. The system is supposedly always inactive but it remains a functional component that could be activated at any time.

This is a good system to use against americas system, especially now that american presidents are getting crazier and crazier. Plus america has never stopped the blaming of russia for everything they think is wrong so i would understand why the russians would make something that would retaliate automatically after getting "pre-emptively" nuked.

So in other words by the time the missiles are launched we'd already be dead.

Not quite, but we wouldn’t have long to live, unless we were underground or in a submerged submarine.

The bright side is that, assuming you're close enough to the blast, you will probably never feel a thing or even realize it happened. What you don't want to be is one of the sad bastards who were juuuuuuuuuuust far enough away to not be killed outright. They'll have the privilege of dying an agonizing death by third (or worse) degree burns and massive radiation poisoning. As they say "Those that survive will envy the dead."

Well at least launching the nukes would serve a great purpose in defending a nation that no longer exists.

@@ajstevens1652 - Mutually Assured Destruction says it all - If you’re crazy enough to launch a nuclear strike on the USA or USSR, you’ll be destroyed. It’s kept sane people from even thinking of launching a “preemptive” nuclear strike. I’m actually much more worried that many of the new members (Pakistan) in the nuclear club don’t have the safeties on their nukes the old ones have had or believe there’s some compelling reason they need to launch a first strike (Iran once they get nukes).
