One of my favourites is black British artist Minnie Small - she paints botanicals and landscapes and houses in watercolour and gouache, so you'd probably enjoy her work: kzbin.info/door/Lcxo0ysMP27XTiRKqrdASg

I love Stillman and Birn, mostly Alpha and Beta versions in 8x10. You can get a small sample pack of all their papers so you can decide which sketchbook to purchase. For me beginning a sketchbook is so exciting while finishing one speaks volumes for feelings of accomplishment.

Great videos as always! I love new sketchbooks--so many possibilities, I remind myself it's only a piece of paper. Love Stillman and Birn--especially the Beta series. Some fave artists; Samantha Dion Baker, Lindsay Weirich, Alyona's Creations, Ceecee's creations, Irit Landgraf

The beta is the first one I tried! You shared some knew artists to me. I’m going to look them up. Thanks.

I still remember vividly how shocked I was at your Small field notes sized journal when I saw it in real life! Hahaha, the deception! 🤣🤣🙌🏻

I remember your face. At first I thought maybe he doesn’t like it because he isn’t saying anything. But then you look at me and was like, this is so crazy.

Love the tips. Just got two tiny Stillman and Birn sketchbooks (alpha and beta) and a small and medium etchr sketchbook... I love the idea of starting with something you know. Also hoping to put my new stickers from you on them! They are lovely.

I get that, I purchased the two larger sizes and I enjoy having both in rotation

I never have a problem starting the 3.5 x 5.5 sketchbooks, probably because they're so small they don't seem "important", but larger ones are a bit more daunting! BTW I always assumed that Kat pronounces her surname "riles" - maybe she'll correct us both! I love her work - I bought her Roots and Wings oracle, plus a couple of stickers for my iPad and journals ❤️

You are right about last last name. She has yet to correct me saying it doesn’t matter. Such a sweet thing.

I use gouache to finish paintings sometimes. Especially is there are small lights that I want to add (flowers mostly). I usually have white with me and mix it w watercolor when I need that opacity. Also I haven’t tried opaque white watercolor. I’m wondering if that would work instead. Has anyone tried it?
@DocumentedJourney3 жыл бұрын
I’ve tried white watercolor and thought the gouache worked better.

Hi Brie. I’m researching Stillman & Birn for my first ever sketchbook. I’m super new to sketchbook so I would appreciate some advice. My medium is largely watercolor, fine liner and fountain pen & ink. Complete beginner in all of that too. Do you have any thoughts of hardcover, softcover and spiral bound? Is the “A6” size too small in your opinion? I tried to look for information on the sketchbook weight (not paper) just to compare which one is more portable vs durable but haven’t found any info. Thanks, and appreciate your input!
@DocumentedJourney3 жыл бұрын
I really like the a5 zeta and it would work well with all your supplies. The size fits nicely in a book bag.

I don’t work in a sketchbook because it’s too nerve wracking 🤣 same as when I’m doing Aboriginal dot paintings - I can’t plan them. I just do & work it out as I go. Lucky it’s forgiving. I’ve tossed a lot of watercolour paintings though 🤣
@DocumentedJourney3 жыл бұрын
I can understand this. It’s probably the reason I like my spiral bound.
