Briggs and Stratton 27HP Engine Lost Compression, What Happened?

A Simplicity Zero Turn Mower with less than 130hours on it lost compression and stopped running while cutting grass. A quick level check of the oil indicated that it was at the low oil add line. Some quick diagnostics indicated that it threw a rod and broke the cam. The valves were likely damaged for both cylinders also. This will be a very expensive repair!

I'd love to see it torn down to see the damage done. In my area at least I've been able to find motors cheap. I replaced the one on my buddies zero turn for 100 dollars all in. Scrap yard is your friend in this case

Hey Trece!!!! I got a 23hp Kohler from a buddy, it has around 450 hours on it, I just need to get a shaft sleeve to install it....He got it from a Deere with a blown transaxle.... Thanks for the good suggestion, Ur thoughts, watching, and commenting!!

Typical Briggs. I'd just look around for a used 20-something HP riding mower for cheap. People basically give them away when the carbs get dirty. Throw the engine in that frame since its a nice zero turn mower.

Another Breaks & Scatters bites the dust… 95 percent of the time the block is scrap too as it breaks the cam journals when those engines throw a rod.. poor owner.

You can get a brand new 18hp Briggs v-twin Vangaurd for under $1,000 then you have a $4k lawnmower ! 20 minute job ! Harbor Freight has a 22hp V-twin for $860 + tax out the door !

The harbor freight one would probably be a better option, as it’s a Honda clone engine! Parts would interchange, and it would be cheaper to repair.

Some Briggs & Stratton engines aren’t as good as they used to be. Pretty sad that a commercial engine broke at 120 hours. It looks like it’s been maintained pretty well too.

I have a B&S 24Hp Platinum and its now at nearly 1100 hours now, and it don't burn nor leak any oil. The 19hp Platinum is trash though from what I have seen and read about.

My machines been down for 3 months and I don't have a shop so I need to be able to figure it out before winter if you could help id be much appreciated no one has a video on it yet and idk how to do it
