I was given a Chickering square grand for a wedding gift three decades ago. Tuners refused to do it, so Hubby and I got a book out of the library. We got used tools at an estates sale. It turned out usable for us at home. Recently we acquired an upright as well. Very different! I broke the C below middle C. Thank you for this video!

I never broke a string while tuning the piano until I started working in low light conditions and couldn't see what I was doing. so now I use a tuner app on my phone and put tape above the tuning pins with the key of each string over each tuning pin and wear an ultra-bright headlamp .

Now Piano Strings look essentially like Acoustic Guitar Strings w/ the Bass Strings being a familiar Phosphor Bronze Wound. Notice that the Wrap Wire is on the portion that's in the Piano because it facilitates restringing.

What diameter is the brass you used for stressing the string? Can you buy that commercially or do I need to make my own?

Is it possible to fit the string without a coil maker and cut the string when through the pin and then wind it onto the pin? I currently don`t own a coil maker and have a custom made F#2 bass string to fit to a console piano

Can the copper winding be slid up and down on the string if you don't revolve the string?

How do you keep the bass string from popping off the BRIDGE PINS? and when they do is there a tool to put them back on easily I noticed the mid "Tri strings go under the bass strings. is there an easy way or trick to replace Mid strings without removing the bass strings! is there a tool to put the tri strings back on the bridge pins without removing or loosening the bass strings?

Do you adjust your measurement from the hitchpin due to the stretch? I was taught to measure old string, then subtract 1/4". I'm still curious what happened to your string. Wrong measurement or bad duplication?

String was probably the one sized for the lower hitch pin (not that I've ever made that mistake ;-) )

my university has a baby grand that's sat out for public playing, but there's 2 bass notes that are missing all of their strings and a high C that is missing 1 of its strings :/ I've reached out to multiple emails for the campus and just gotten no reply, about if they would fix it or not, so I'm tempted to fix it myself...

​@@brighamspianoserviceI give the turn at the upper part of the string, in the opposite direction as at the bottom part so the effect is the same. This saves me getting on my knees one more time. This method seems to work , would you think there is an objection to this?

Please get a better camera so your close ups are not so blurry and out of focus. All the close ups are simply non watchable. Other than that this video is great!!!! Thanks for sharing.

If a piano hasnt been tuned in 60 years should never be forced up to pitch! All the strings would break. Bad idea

It's a homemade tool made from a brass rod found at any big box hardware store.
