I know the series is not supposed to be historically accurate about Olive. Olive by the way was not a strong will feminist type at all. Everyone reported that she was permanently shaken and had no confidence and would shy away. Feminists had hoped to use her to represent the strong woman but the truth eventually comes out. She was not a whore but there is alot of evidence that she liked certain things about the wild life with the indians.

No doubt, as were most all women in the past. It doesn’t make for good TV though to have women repressed and not allowed to have a voice. I just hope people watching realize when you study history, most people were just trying to survive. There was a pecking order to society and families with males at the top, especially deeply religious societies.
@dianamorris16472 жыл бұрын
@@robertburch3813 In European Societies, especially those that held religious zealots in High Positions of Authority, women were indeed repressed. Brigham Young & John Smith's "tales" & the historical links to polygamy, & incest would suggest that she was traumatized well before her alleged "capture." There was no evidence of the "massacre" being perpetrated by local Indians, only a "story" which was perpetuated by her brother, Lorenzo, who could also have been involved in her trauma. She appeared to enjoy her life among the Mojave, & her "rotten womb" could well have been the result of "incest," which was not something acceptable in Tribal life. Also, Indian women were not repressed, since Tribal authority & Wisdom was historically generated from a historically Matriarchal order. As a California Native, I think average Americans are quick to believe the "worst" about Indigenous ppls. This is especially true after hundreds of years of propaganda & very little experience OR friendships with ppl of Native dissent. After all, there aren't many of us left, & indeed even fewer who managed to survive the slaughter of our families, & dissolution of our cultures. In truth the marriage between our Culture & Colonization (especially in California), made for a uniquely gentle, respectful, loving World-view. Despite losing more than half my family to disease & intentional slaughter, my parents & extended family continued to teach us about our connection to the Earth, and to accept without judgement "other beliefs." Unlike most of my white friends, we (as children) weren't beaten, did not experience any violence in our home (a small 1-room trailer), & had a joyously blessed, & loving relationship with all known relatives. We were taught to study hard, get as much education as possible, and have gratitude for what little we were left with, & respect for other ppl, regardless of their treatment & attitude toward us. I am old now @ 75 yrs, but I spent 10 yrs putting my 1st husband through college (@UC Berkeley) & raising 2 children with a Jewish partner, who I loved deeply until his death in 2014 (after 27 yrs together & 8 yrs separated). He left me @ 60 yo to return to his "old" bachelor ways, after suffering numerous strokes. My advice: be careful believing old Western tales about what Indians did. I worked with Indian youth & most suffer intergenerational trauma, as a result of systemic racism in the US Govt & in US Society, in general!

@robertburch3813 Жыл бұрын
@@dianamorris1647 Yes, that is why I read books and look to better evidence about our past like ancestry, birth/death records, and scientific evidence. Have you ever taken a 23 and me? One thing we are finding out is that very few people that claim to have 'Indian/Native' heritage actually have little or none at all. It just seemed like a cool way to identify starting about 50 years ago. Your story sounds like you've been through a lot but no society or culture is perfect. For instance, most of the big mammals of the Americas went extinct not long after humans arrived, way before the Europeans arrived. Clovis people were actually some of the first 'native' people in the Americas and were displaced by other waves of 'native' people. Places like Mesa Verde were examples of people building elaborate settlements, than overusing and destroying their resources to the point the Pueblo had to leave them. What I don't like about all of these historical shows is that they are mostly false and fit a view that is entertaining to most people in 2023 to watch, rather than a documentary which is more factually based.

I don't know who wrote this but historical accounts say that Olive Oatman spoke fondly of the Mohave tribe where she integrated into the tribe by choice and I'm sure she wasn't forced to have the tattoo it was part of the tribal customs, tattoos like that are always part of a coming of age ritual. Her family was killed by the Yavapai (except her brother and sister) and she was mormon originally, and that certainly looks like her chin tattoo... but apart from that the rest of this is total fiction... definitely written from a white perspective that seems to think a tattoo like that would make her an outcast and prostitute (apparently), when in reality the tattoo she got made her a celebrity not only in her time, but in the current day as well. Without it the person who wrote this scene wouldn't have even known about her... unfortunate that they chose to portray the incredible person she was as some sort of scorned and bitter girl who couldn't do anything other than become a prostitute after getting that "marked up face"... which really couldn't be any further from the truth, and sure... people can say that it's a fictional character with a different name, by why give the character a backstory with some identical details (Raised as Mormon, Yavapai killing her family and kidnapping her and not to mention the identically copied tattoo and choice of similar looking actress) only to then fictionalise the ACTUAL lessons that came from her story. Not a fan.
@acechadwick3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And if you look at Olive Oatman's actual tattoo you will see it didn't look as if it was applied in a local tattoo parlour, but was thick and uneven as they used a rock to eviscerate the skin before applying the cactus dye. She said that they never in any way defiled her but rumour had it, that she had two boys by one of the tribesmen, but had to leave them behind when rescued. Obviously it was easier for her to say that she was untouched but the mere fact that her nickname amongst the Mohave was Spantsa makes you wonder. You don't get called 'rotten vagina/womb for no reason. I don't know why they chose an actual historical figure to portray a captive and then maligned her actual story with the whole prostitute nonsense.

@@cameronreed1411 He ordered the violence. You need to go outside of the Mormon Church to know what really happened. There's documentation and testimonies. They tried to blame the Indians, but it was Mormons who were told to massacre this group of people. This was confirmed and admitted by your multi-billion dollar a year corporation church. They placed all the blame on one man, Lee. He was not alone. Brigham Young was a liar and abuser. If you were to meet someone today, that told you the voice of God told him to marry 40+ women, would you believe him? Would you give all your money to him, trusting that he would keep it "safe" for you until after you crossed 2,000 miles of wilderness on foot (with a really good chance of dying), pushing a handcart with all your worldly goods? And you can't speak the language? Would you follow someone that told you that you can become a god? Well, that's actually what Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow have done. Then, like Smith and Young, anyone who got in the way, they killed. Then they would drag their body through the streets as an example to all other Mormons on what would happen if you "apostatize" . Oh, and they also burned their home down and left their wife and children homeless and destitute. Is that someone you want to trust and believe when you're told that a massacre he ordered arrived too late? Why would such a "humble" people even THINK to do that if they were being "led by the LORD"? It's NEVER ok to murder anyone, for any reason!
