I'd have given anything for this to be one of the songs he played at the show I seen him at.

I’ve always wondered if Conor and Mike re-recorded this song or others from “Collection” in the 98-02 era being as they did a full-band version of “February 15th.”

He started busting this out in 2004, during the "Vote for Change" tour with Springsteen, oddly enough. I believe that was the debut of this 'version', but unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge (and I have a friend who's like a deranged Superfan, who seems to know what studios they recorded in, and when, and what songs were attempted, even when they end up unreleased), they never actually went in and tried to lay this down...which is a shame. I remember when the "Four Winds EP" came out, all the b-sides from that are in this vein--still the same kind of loveable, 'straight from the diary poetry' Oberst lyrics, but over a much more anthemic, rock and roll kind of backdrop, and I remember being excited, thinking that was kind of going to be the new direction. Then when "Cassadaga" did come out, most of it was just a much more cleaned up version of the same kinda folky stuff he had been doing for a while, and I was a bit disappointed. But yeah, in any case--would love a studio cut of this.

This is a amazing song! Sounds much better when they do it live now, the original recording sounds pretty poor!
@TapeCollageForEloise7 жыл бұрын
The original recording might be technically "poor" but I think there's a huge amount to charm and atmosphere to the way it sounds. It's unashamedly lo-fi and sounds exactly how a kid trying to make a pop song in his basement should sound.
