Wow, okay, so I just discovered this whole 'Companion EPs'/re-release thing today (somehow), and so far he has been doing EXACTLY what I had hoped when I learned of it, specifically with "Digital Ash" and "Wide Awake"...he essentially re-did "Gold Mine" as if it was an I'm Wide Awake track, and here "Old Soul Song" as if it was on Digital Ash, which is brilliant. In an odd way, those albums were always companion pieces, despite the obvious musical differences...you could tell the songs came from the same period, the same writing sessions, Conor was pre-occupied with the same topics, although making the folky organic album about NYC and the spacy-electronic record more about Omaha was a cool little twist. But in any case, I'd always end up 'thought experiment' wondering, 'How would this song have ended up if it was on the other record?". And that seems to be EXACTLY what he's doing, bringing all these different vibes to the surface of familiar songs in the process (not to mention that those songs simply sound fucking great). I hope he sticks with this 'theme' of turning the electronic-driven tracks organic and busting out the synths and loops for the originally folky songs, once we hear the rest of the new versions for these 2 records
