I’ve always been so against matte boxes - I love halation and flares and hate the added weight.. I even so much protested that I would physically hold filters in front of the lens to get ND on my shot. But I just picked up one of these thanks to your review, and oh my god this is a game changer! I love this thing. Installs in 1 second, ridiculously lightweight, and the rubber hood that you can just fold back if you WANT halation. Thanks for converting me!

So happy to hear that! It's an amazing piece of gear that is a breath of fresh air for matte box designs.

Great review! My main issue with this matte box is lasting in the long run. I don't trust a spring loaded clip forever. Also wish that shade held is shape with more rigid edges to look better in front of clients. Otherwise love the idea
@NiceladyproductionsCanada7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. I haven't had any issues with the shape of the mattebox changing. I had it sort of flattened in a bag by accident and when I popped it back out it unfurled right back to its shape. I can't speak to how long the spring lasts as I believe I've only had it a year and a bit (no issues yet). I've had their VIV matte box for 5 years now and it works the same as day one.

I have to agree that the Misfit ATOM is a great mattebox, only two cons: 1. I do not like to put two filters in it even though it is possible, because I fear scratches on my filters when putting glass on glass. 2. The rail holder for the french flag is not my favorite design. It is wiggly and because of the small screw I can't tighten it enough. I'd preferred a better solution to this. Also the clamp on the french flag itself doesn't tighten enough.

Just add a piece of duvetyne between your filters to avoid scratching. It also works as negative fill. Like...very negative...

Hey Kelly! Your channel is amazing, I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. I especially love your most recent video. I was wondering how the misfit atom has held up over the years? Also, when you use two filters is there any space between them? Have you ever had any scratches occur if dust or dirt gets in between them?
@NiceladyproductionsCanada2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks so much for you kind words and questions. I use the Misfit Atom all the time and I still looks like new, minus a few scuffs on the rubber. I've changed to so many different lenses over the years and I find it's been really easy to use whatever I want with it. I tend to use one donut or use the 114mm opening and then make sure all my lenses have step-up rings or whatever I need to being able to clamp the misfit one the front. I keep my glass in pouches and stack them without any issues, no scratching at all or dust in between. I have a blower with me for getting dust off the front filter. If you can get a deal on it, like B&H is offering today, it's an even better buy.

@@NiceladyproductionsCanada Thanks for all the info! Yeah, BH's deal definitely has me interested. I'm glad you haven't experienced any issues with the glass touching each other. Bit of a side question, but what brand of IRNDs do you like to use? I've been going back and forth between Schneider, Tiffen and Firecrest.

@@williamsnyder4361 I've been using NiSi filters. For me they have the least colour cast. I was using ProStop before that. The key is to use a top flag if you can in bright conditions to not get that pink flare impacting the shot.

great review ! The only issue I can see with this design is getting finger prints on the filters as you put them in place.
@NiceladyproductionsCanada6 жыл бұрын
Yes, fingerprints can happen. What I do is hold the filters by their edges, then tip them in and out of the tray, that usually works but not so easy when the camera is connected to a tripod (to tip it when working alone). If I get a finger print on one, it's on the edge where my lens won't capture it.

Nice and clean video, thinking a lot to jump into BT MisfitAtom, from my old and trustee MMB1, I´m just need a really really confident Clamp On to my Canon L lenses! in run&gun doc style!
@NiceladyproductionsCanada7 жыл бұрын
The Misfit ATOM clamps on perfectly using donuts to whatever lens you have, it's just important to have a thick edge on the lens, which is why I have Duclos and Cordvision adapters for my still lenses.

Was looking at it but they were saying it's more for gimbal work. Can you comment on how it fits into tripod scenarios where you have more control over lighting and more?
@NiceladyproductionsCanada5 жыл бұрын
The Misfit Atom is perfect for any type of shooting. Bright Tangerine designed it to be light and have the front cover removable for gimbal work or lightweight setups, basically totally different than traditional matte boxes that are heavy. All of Bright Tangerine's matte boxes take weight into consideration (using carbon fiber etc) but this is the smallest. So this works for any setup. The real difference is how the filters are loaded, you stack them on the front, so I find it easier to tilt the camera back to get them in or tilt forward to pop them out (but it's not necessary). Some of their other matte boxes have more stages for more filters and an even wider field of view for bigger sensor cameras. I find myself using the Misfit Atom on more occasions than the VIV matte box I own of theirs because the VIV is slightly bigger and heavier and I don't need the extra width for my Super 35 setup. You can't go wrong with their products.

hi, yes you can, they lay one on top of each other. There's an additional add-on that allow them to sit at an angle so there's less filter reflection.
