I suppose the idea is that if you convict him it does not matter what happens next you already chose your personal will over justice. It's kind of the four lights of Picard: the fact that he says five doesn't imply much, but that Picard have been broken. It's similar here, I guess. Or you can imagine it is a medieval thing and the guilty will be executed at once: no turning back from your verdict.

As someone that studies philosophy it was so hard keeping to an ethical theory in this, especially with the case of the kidnapped child and the cheating spouse. No matter what ethical theory you've chosen to apply (I chose consequence ethics) if you chose to save the child, you also have to lie to your friend because if not, you're going against your theory. You've established that justice doesn't matter if the outcome justifies the deed, and so you have to lie. That's why keeping to one ethical theory is nearly impossible, shown clearly here, as humans have their own conscienses. Then again, just keeping to one's conscience isn't the way to go either, because you can't apply that to everyone, who has significantly different consciences and thus might do actions that are ethically "wrong". :)

According to Rushworth Kidder in “Moral Courage” there are only four true moral dilemmas. All the difficult questions and conflicts and struggles boil down, at their most basic level to one of these. I read this old book years ago and have yet to find him incorrect. 1. Truth vs. Loyalty = honesty and integrity vs. commitment and promise-keeping. I think of this one as “what’s right” versus “who’s right.” The thing about ethical dilemmas is that it is never a conflict between right and wrong-it’s between what’s right-and what’s right-when it’s impossible to do both. It’s not wrong to be loyal, to pick your mate, your best friend, your country, and stand by them-even sometimes-when they’re wrong. But it’s never wrong to stand up for the truth either, to be willing to stand alone if need be, to have that kind of courage. But that’s the other thing about dilemmas-whichever way you go, you are betraying the other principle. 2. Individual vs. Community = We flip off the phrase “for the greater good”casually, as though it was a given that everyone agrees to without ever stopping to think that means valuing community over the different individuals that have formed that community. It’s the community’s job to help nurture and protect the individual-because without those individuals, there can’t be any community. But there is also no community without every individual giving-maybe even giving up-a little to make that happen. So where does one draw the line? When does community demand too much? When is the individual being so self-concerned that community won’t survive? 3. Short term vs. Long term = Most people-at least those who keep up with psychology-have heard the phrase “delayed gratification.” Psychologists offered children a cookie, or if they could wait and not eat the cookie for an hour, they would get a second cookie. Those that waited practiced ‘delayed gratification’-that is they took the long term view. That is often the “more right” choice for the world we live in-but not always. There is a time and place for ‘seizing the day,’ for smelling the roses while they bloom, for embracing the immediate and living right where you are when you’re there. Every now and then, it is the right thing to do to just eat the cookie. 4. Justice vs. Mercy = This one is hard for most people because most of us don’t really know how to be either one of these with any consistency. If pressed, we couldn’t even explain what they actually mean, or what they look like when practiced. But all the most significant issues of life find their roots right here. We want the world to be fair and just to us, but it requires a sense of mercy to turn around and be fair and just to others. That means this one is hard because, unlike the others, it is never an either or choice-this is always both-these two things go together or they become meaningless. Trying to maintain something approaching balance without letting go of one or the other is a tension that is sometimes hard to live with. I see this last one as the toughest ethical dilemma for that reason.

Here are my answers 1. A) You shouldn't sleep on train tracks. that's just risking your life for some Zs. Just sleep somewhere else. 2. A) I would think that the man would feel good knowing that he saved 7 clueless other lol 3. B) I couldn't leave my child with those people. 4. A) Her day may be ruined, but her knowledge about what was happening to her spouse is good. 5. B) Even though that what he committed was bad, he did well. 6. A) Jeez I ain't that arrogant. Besides, she doesn't deserve it at all whatsoever. 7. Family member) Still not that arrogant. I would never live myself down if I knew I had the chance to save a family member, but let them die.

"Family gave you life so if you hate them you should die". It's actually more true the other way around, if you gave this person life, YOU would naturally have the responsibility to raise them until they fly on their own. Other than that, family doesn't really *owe* family anything, and a lot of times people really cling to that idea when their family is abusive, so I disagree with your point of view.

I don't think number 5 accurately depicts the end results, just because I think a rational thinker would realize the money given to the orphanage was more important for them than the bank. Actually the Judge can reverse their decision after their child is freed, a train cannot switch tracks by itself because it's a safety feature that's built in. Most trolleys are electric as are diesel locomotives which means their power can be cut by its driver unless their a lunatic and a runaway is usually caused by human error than mechanical one.

Agreed, I used to think these kind of what-ifs were interesting, but now I started realizing how unrealistic they are, and that there are almost never these binary choices like we are being presented.
@lilchristuten7568
@lilchristuten7568 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Mattingly I actually didn't think about the fact that for the driver of a train to switch tracks, they must completely stop the train first, get out, manually switch the tracks, and then start the train again(which is why the original question says that you are a person who sees the train and are able to switch the tracks, not that you are the driver). If the trolley is already out of control and on a sufficiently steep hill cutting the power may not be enough to stop it in time. Also as for the judge he/she can recuse themself or simply render a fake judgment, allowing the lawyer of the accused and the prosecution know that he/she is doing so beforehand.
@plum876
@plum876 6 жыл бұрын
To switch train tracks doesn't mean to physically change the tracks on the ground, what you said was like you wanted to turn right in your car, so you turned it off and pushed it so it was turning right, got back in, and started to drive again.

A, no one would like that. I can already see the divorce getting really ugly. 5. B, you said I know the guy? Well, I know a good person then. 6. B, see answer 2, though I might say it was both of our faults. Might. 7. Depends on who the family member is and if it's a soulmate as you said. I would likely go for the family member and tell them to put in effort on their end if they wanna live cause I need the other hand to get the money. Money can dry.

For 7 it should be more for the family member or the lover, why? well not all suitcases are waterproof, the money could be ruined, why risk it? Saving a lover from potential death however might strengthen your bond with the lover, probably the same with the family member, so in all logic, probably a good idea to not go for the money, as it probably already ruined by the water
@SauerbratenRules
@SauerbratenRules 6 жыл бұрын
Well thats might be true in your eyes, but different people different circumstances and the suitcase does not need to be waterproof get mostly any kind of money that is mate out of paper in to a washing machine and even if it is torn you could still use it or go to a bank and exchange it for one that causes less problems for you.

David Schmidt My thoughts exactly. 1. A... Why's a guy sleeping on tracks? 2. B... Am I able to pish a guy over? Maybe not physically. & who's to say it really stops the others from harm, or puts nore in harm? 3. B... As you said, It's not possible I'd see my child, I'd hope for it & couldn't be fair. But if I could get my kid back, then help the innocent man I'd do that for them. 4. A... I'd tell my friend the truth, like you said it's their choice to deal with. 5. B... Orphans win banks insured. Hands down helping kids is just more important. 6. A... It's not so cut & dry about the total reasons for the accident. Plus the other driver who thinks it's their fault has seen you, your car, plates, you leave your worse off. Might as well face the facts on it. Bonus question... As you said it depends who's in the water! My kids, or my father would be top priority! My extended family is based on who, most would choose money over me! My "lover" well based on my Xs they're not doing me any favors, so a new person is doubtful. & I'm not rich, sure we could all use the money, but it's not a life! & they didn't really go into being split down the middle. But you can be both logical & emotional.

Your house is on fire and you find your mom and dog in your mother's room sleeping. You shout but both are heavy sleepers. The burning ceiling starts to cave in and instinctively you leap for one of the two. Do you save your mother or the dog? Me? I'd save my Xbox.

This test wasn't the best way, although there are some good questions here... there are ethics classes for a reason btw, also there are people who make it their job to flesh out and think about different Moral Theories... a true moral test would probably give you more moral questions that line with different many different moral theories and grade on the consistency of your answers as well as which moral theories one leans toward... each moral theory has their own problems though, lets take a more Relativist approach for example: if you say that every single person has their own differant moral code or every culture has their own moral code, on the exteme side you have to say that a serial killer was just fulfilling their moral beliefs in however they need to. On the other hand, a more relativist could explain why there are more different ideas of morality easier than someone who believes in a moral Absolutist theory.
