The real shame here is the loss of Astroworld, which in its heyday was a first class theme park. Modeled after Disneyland, Astroworld was a beautifully landscaped family park with great rides, shows and eateries. Had the city worked with Six Flags, it could have updated and expanded its facilities, including adding a water park. Furthermore, the architecturally significant Astrodome should have been have never been replaced by the generic NRG. Instead, the iconic stadium should have been refurbished and its unique historical value preserved. Investments in the Astrodome and Astroworld could have been complimented by adding hotels, shopping districts and a convention center. The entire complex could have been connected via monorails and sky rides, making the facility easy to navigate and ensuring guests spend their money within its confines. This development would have created one of the country's premiere entertainment destinations, generating millions in revenue and thousands of jobs. Because no leaders had any vision, we are now stuck with the boring NRG, and not much else. Without other unique attractions in the immediate area, there is no reason for visitors to stay and spend. Houston really lost out on this one.

I spent weeks in Houston after Hurricane Katrina as a volunteer with the Red Cross. Everyday bright and early we would be at the Astrodome and hundreds of busses would come and thousands of victims most with nothing but the clothes on their back would line up outside in the blazing TX heat. We spent entire days and nights just handing out water and food to the ppl in line, reuniting families and loved ones, giving medical treatment, checking people in, handing out supplies, preparing meals, setting up cots like mini shelters for them etc. I distinctly remember one day where I simply stopped for a moment and just took it all in. Cots as far as the eye could see, organized chaos going on all around me and armed National Guard troops stationed everywhere. It’s all so very surreal to think back on now. After one of the worst natural disasters in US history that facility was a literal lifesaver for countless people and that’s how I will always remember it. For just a sports stadium it has had quite a diverse and incredible history.

In defense of the young lady I don't think this is ridiculous it's really just a matter of perception. Events that happen in our own lifetime tend to take on predominant historical importance and it's just human nature to perceive that thru one's own generation, mankind has at last "arrived".

@Christopher Althouse I guess you don’t watch baseball but Tropicana field is garbage, it’s dark and the grey cement walls in the outfield makes the game seem gloomy. The baseball can sometimes hit the catwalks supporting the dome and get stuck or fall in fair territory, the Rays lost a pennant because of the catwalks, the batter hit a pop up and it bounced of the catwalk and into fair territory behind the pitchers mound and the game deciding run came across the plate. To loose a pennant because of catwalks is sad. That stadium is a dump and the Rays need a new stadium. I’m not even a Rays fan

The Colts were one of two new NL expansion teams that year. The other team was the NY Mets. The Sportswriters predicted the Colts would wind up in dead last (10th) place that first year. I grew up in Houston and I watched as the Astrodome was being built. I recall that on the day the air conditioning was turned on for the first time, a cloud formed high up in the dome as the humid air condensed and it rained inside of the Astrodome. In 1970, the film Brewster McCloud was filmed in the Astrodome and the premier of the film was held inside of the Astrodome on a giant screen erected especially for the premier. The film was about a boy who lived in tunnels under the Astrodome and locals were hired for some of the supporting roles. A friend of mine landed a minor speaking part in the film and he was able to get me and a few of his other friends free tickets to the movie's premier. That was the only time I was actually in the Astrodome, because I moved to California shortly after the movie premier. I never lived in Houston again, but I did visit last Thanksgiving and it's not the wonderful place I knew growing up in the nineteen forties, fifties and sixties. It's more advantageous for politicians to commission a new stadium, because new construction provides more revenue to more business owners (who donate to their campaigns). I'm only pointing out why they would build a new building next to one that could be 'retrofitted.' That really is the reason (very simply) why a city would do that. Although, sometimes it's the team's owner(s) that say "build a new one or we move to another city" It's all very intricate and convoluted, but basically it's people scratching each other's backs. The reason it was abandoned has nothing to due with the stadium itself. Refurbishing it would be cheaper than building a new one and paying maintenance on the old. But, the monetary savings isn't as important to those involved as is many unrelated factors. The LAST thing I want to do is get political in this day and age. I avoid that shit. The problem is that the people who vote for these big ignorant decisions are fair - weather Houstonians. They only recently moved here and after they make a good enough profit will leave, but will add to the destruction of Houston with their input.

@capacitance-rca1981 Smells can be dealt with. You've heard of baking soda and such? If you can clean up a murdee scene with rotted corpses, ANYTHING can be cleaned. Asbestos? Yeah, also no major. It's covered up (on purpose) to keep it intact or torn up entirely every day. There's all kinds of people who do that for a living. Normally, you leave it and keep people away from it until it's unavoidable. If you don't fool with it and it's intact, it's 🙂 The stuff from the early days is almost completely indestructible. Your grandmother probably still has it in her house if it wasn't remodeled. Armstrong put it in flooring right up until 1984, I have an email from them saying it flat-out...even tho we knew it was dangerous 100+ years ago.

Born and raised in Houston, memories of going to the Dome to see the Houston Rodeo, motocross races, the Astros and the Oilers. Saw Evel Knievel make a jump there. Anyone's that's been to Houston from May to October will know why they wanted an air-conditioned venue.

I've lived in Houston my whole life, and always wondered why they haven't done anything with it since Katrina. This was very informative! Thanks y'all! What an interesting video :)

A four letter word C-O-D-E. The dome was built in a different time and it would require a complete update that isn't cheap.

So nice to see someone outside of Houston actually do thorough research on the Astrodome. I don't think any Houstonian knew half the information in this video. Very well put together.

Ahh, trip down hometown memory lane. I grew up during the Astrodome's heyday in the 80s and 90s in west Houston. Seeing this was nostalgic. If not a teeny bit sad. Thank you Jake ♥️

HAVENT WATCHED THE VIDEO BUT I AM SOOOOO EXCITED FOR THSI! As a fellow houstonian, I still have yet to know why the Astrodome got abandoned! Edit: I’ve finally watched it! And loved it! As a Houstonian who was born in 1999, right when the astrodome was useless, I’ve always wondered why the structure was kept there. But yet I agreed with people that the structure should be kept there. And Jake explaining how a dome stadium is unique on its own made me realize why. I’ve attended the Houston Rodeo for maaaany years. If you’ve gone, you’d know that it takes place on the NRG park, which means you’re always walking around the Astrodome. Imagine doing that since you could remember. Now imagine that and then going to your first baseball game there, or seeing Selena before she passed away. This building holds ALOT of sentimental value for Houstonians. And I’m sooooo glad that Jake did it justice! Not only did I learn something new about it, but also just found joy in watching you cover something I’ve known and seen my entire life. :) Also, I was so sad when they closed Astroworld. Even to this day, that fucking empty lot is still there and it haunts anyone who’s been to Astroworld. Now it’s just Rodeo parking ahahahahah!

It was such a glorious and comfortable place to be. I have never been to Minute Maid, don't ever plan to go. It can't hold a candle to the Dome.
