Brigita Ozolins grew up on the outskirts of Melbourne, living with her big, extended Latvian family.
Her mother would tell her folk stories and sing Latvian songs to her, painting a picture for Brigita of a paradise full of vivid flowers in the springtime, and pristine snow in the winter, where only very polite children lived.
And she wondered how on earth her mother could have left this picturesque fairytale land.
When Brigita was in her 50s, she started to really talk to her mother about the dramatic, wartime escape she made at just 17 years old, from Riga through Poland into Germany, south to Italy before finally boarding a boat for the other side of the world.
It's a journey Brigita replicated as an artist and a daughter, 60 years later.
