One of the, if not THE, best early music recordings I've heard in the past five years. The material is well-chosen, always engaging and surprising, but the voice and the recorder are out of this world in their intelligence and lyricism.

The issue for women at this period was not to "write" music, but to be published under their name. "One of the greatest" is correct formulation, but after the most known and prolific: Baraba Strozzi, you find beautiful italian published music from Francesca and Settimia Caccini, Isabella Leonarda (a none), and less known : Raphaella Aleotti, Manalena Casulana, Lucrezia Vizzana, Chiara Cozzolani, Antonia Bembo, de Rossi, Agostini, Bianca Media, etc...

Thanks for the information. I search out women artists of all disciplines and eras. This, because there is a rich history that is hugely neglected. It's all out of the box now, but still needs to be searched out. The work is not completed. So many questions....I'm wondering why none are known as legends, such as Bach, Beethoven, ...etc., etc., ? Were they respected highly in their times? Why, through so many eras I believe the reasons depend on attitude of culture. Maybe they were known in their specific eras, but neglected by music historians over time. I rather doubt this though. This CD is sold on eBay for an average of $20. Wasn't going to get any more CDs but think I'm going to have to get this. Really inspiring.

İt's not really accurate to say Barbara Strozzi was one of the first women to write music (Hildegarde of Bingen comes to mind), but all the same, Strozzi is an amazing composer, just as good as any of her gentleman counterparts! 👩💼👊

correctly. For certain people every woman doing something is the "first"

@Divergent Integral There certainly weren't as many women as there were men by far, & of the women who were known composers, comparatively little of their work survives.

It's also not accurate to say that she was one of the greatest Italian composers of the 17th century. She was an average composer. She doesn't present us with anything particularly novel either. She was best known for her skill as a singer during her own lifetime.
@heaven73604 ай бұрын
I don't think it's important she is the first or not female to write. It's amazing she's remembered at all along with all female artists of earlier eras. Mercifully the modern mind set is generally not viewing women as second class citizens whose efforts in this world are uselessly inferior. Times have changed and at least hopefully, forever.

L'amante segreto is a song full of mysteries: the gender of the amante is not given by italian langage, but all leads to believe that the amante is a WOMAN. So, is it the "secret" love of a woman for an other woman ? An other option would be that the text would have been written by a certain LUIGI ZORZISTA (the anagram of Guilio Strozzi, father of Barbara Strozzi, and very well known poet at the moment - he wrote texts for Cavalli and Monteverdi), to be sung by a male voice.. in "straight" love for a woman, and Barbara composed music on it, as she often did. But we also know that Barbara was an excellent lutenist and singer and she loved to perform her own pieces for private parties (quite hot as per the rumor)... Since, L'amante Segreto is commonly sung by soprano...

Sorry, Barbara Strozzi hat die Musik geschrieben, wusste ich nicht.
