Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was one of the most prolific composers of the 18th century; although the largest part of his compositional activities were devoted to vocal music, he wrote a substantial number of overtures, which this splendid 8-disc collection is dedicated to.
Although Telemann chose the title of ‘Overtures’, this was somewhat interchangeable with the genre of the Suite in his era. Each work opens with a three-part French overture, and this is followed by a series of varied, shorter pieces - encompassing everything from dances (drawn from the French tradition and beyond), fugues, chaconnes, passacailles, musical portraits, folk dances and evocations of scenes and characters.
In these eight discs, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense and Patrick Peire’s three separate volumes of Telemann Overtures have been collected together for the first time, creating a box set that is set apart by its breadth. Its overview of 33 Overtures illuminates Telemann’s hugely inventive approach to instrumentation, while revealing the wealth of subjects that he sought inspiration in. The ‘Alster Overtüre’, for example, named after the Alster river in Germany, features a ‘Concert of Frogs and Crows’, while another Overture is inspired by Cervantes’ Don Quixote.
A generous selection of 33 Overtures (or Orchestral Suites) by Georg Philipp Telemann, formerly issued separately, now collected in one 8-CD set. This collection contains the first 2 out of 8 discs.

He was a master of what was known as the French Overture but was so much more. A wonderful orchestrator. and so prolific. I listen to You Tube at the age of 80 and have listened to baroque music for 70 years but still discover compositions by him I have never heard before and they are played wonderfully here.

I am a Blues musician who plays the electric bass but my father introduced me to Telemann many years ago and I really like it. Excuse my ignorance but it seems not as "Heavy/serious as a lot of classical music It makes a change from the Delta/North Mississippi/Chicago/Texas Blues!

Longevity of poisonous opinion and downright gossip about some superbly talented artists is staggering to me. Exceedingly talented AND productive Telemann is a victim of such thing. For centuries he was delegated to stew in shadows just because a bunch of jelous, inept and far less succesful colleagues seriously damaged his stellar reputation as composer by creating idiotic opnion that he is just that frivolous, decorative and superficial hack, that was churning out some unimportant tunes. That is why, thanks to the Early Music revivalists, who saw things for what they are only relatively recently reputation of Herr Telemann is seem to be on a mend. His music is performed, recorded, listened to and enjoyed. Immensely in my case. His music is approachable but highly sophisticated and exceptionally crafted. A joy to listen to. Let alone the evenly high level of quality in writing of each even small piece. This sensitive stylish recording does a good justice to the fantastic material Herr Telemann provided. Danke, Maestro Telemann!

I have always been an avid fan of Handel, Bach and Mozart for decades. I play their music endlessly in shuffle mode on my Sony 5-CD player (I'm old). Anyway a few years back I stumbled across Telemann. Now I wish I had a 25-CD player (Internet streaming is too costly up here where I live so far). I live in the mountains of central Idaho and when I fire up the CD player and enjoy this great music it complements perfectly the seemingly endless beauty by which I am surrounded. Life is good.

In Germany he is often denounced as "Tengelmann", a word which sounds like "Telemann" but means a big food store chain, as if you would call him in the United States "Walmart". But I think he wrote very much, but I have never heard something of low quality written by him. He is really one of the great composers who made transcendent music. The light texture which his music often possesses is only surface, in the depth it is wonderful richness filigreed and delicate into the smallest harmony line, wonderfully transparent and fascinatingly flexible. It is a little bit like Mozart's music, with a wonderful surface for untrained listeners and with a rich harmony background for the real connoisseurs.

For years I've been looking for CDs to increase my collection of Telemann's wonderful overtures. And now I see the super-budget label recording a complete set. I'm sure, when completed, the box set will be extremely affordable. Which is why it totally breaks my heart that Brilliant chose an ensemble that "despite the search for authenticity, CIB plays on modern instruments." What rubbish! As if there are not enough period ensembles to support. CD collectors who spend real money will do well to avoid this set. Leave it to the casual Spotify listeners seeking background music.

I think this was wonderfully recorded.. There's not thing wrong with modern instruments. However, if you want original instruments, you can get various recordings of Telemann's works (Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert recorded two discs of Telemann Overtures).

Yes ... but the are often to quick. They play very virtuoso but they sometimes forget that they are only the interpreters.They often show that they are very exercised, but are a little bit slick and often a little bit like a Prussian military band. The Virtuosi Saxoniae or these musicians of Brugge found a better way to approach. They better show the imaginativeness of the particular piece and prevent to make pure showpieces. Some pieces are showpieces, no question, for example Bach's Badinerie. But to make every piece a pure show is a misinterpretation of baroque music. Accurately understood the serenity and severity of this music is comparable with Mozart, Brahms or Schubert.
