Very neat Dave. I didn't know you could liquefy sulfur. I did make some "super matches" using fat wood and and the crushed tips of smaller matches making a match that could burn for about 3 1/2 minutes.

So many useful things available on the shelf in stores over there. I notice how many things like that sulphur you can get your hands on. Here in the UK, (Europe in fact) chemicals of most kinds are restricted. That took a fair while to ignite Dave. Thanks for your efforts for us, I enjoy every video.

I've been making Spunks for 25 - 30 years. I think the idea of using fatwood is brilliant!!!

youve taught me vocabulary as well. i now know why spunky means full of energy ready to go and why punk blows a lot of smoke but dont got much fire. thank you etymology is almost as important to me as bushcraft

Dave my mom was Amish and when we were sick she would take the ash shovel and some coals from the fire and put sulfur on it and walk through the house , it would smoke and she said it would kill the sickness , they had a lot of old remedy for germs , hydrate was another . not fire , but another use for sulfur

pretty cool idea but what if you took pine resin and used it to make fat wood and mixed the sulfur in with it when you made the fat wood thats my first question 2nd question is where do you find sulfur like that at and thank you for the really neat video

seems you could dip the spunks in char or wrap a bit of char cloth around them, thereby reducing combustion time.

So does fat wood come only from pine and is it just the center of the log or branch? Also how do you tell if you actually have fat wood vs just a piece of pine? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with those of us who will probably never get the chance to attend your school.

thanks for all the videos and i've a question: i hear the small LPG bottles will freeze up, or won't work in very cold situations and was wondering if one could use hand warmers to either keep them from freezing up (like in transit, put them in the pack near the bottles an hour or two before making camp) or unfreeze them? hand warmers get to around 100-110°f. but don't know if thas too hot to put near the little LPG bottles. again, thanks :)

Two things. Did you try that with the fat wood alone to see if the sulfur truly helps? And, I found a torrent with a famers encyclopedia from 1881 scanned and it has instructions for making strike anywhere matches. Although I haven't tried it yet.
@benjimckinney8 жыл бұрын
+axe609 Would you care to share the name of the book you are referring to? I would love to track down a digital copy!
Is there a way to make these "strike anywhere"? Strike anywhere "fat wood" matches would be a really great idea.

Hey Dave, I love what you do with this channel and have been a fan of yours for a long time. I have a deep respect and admiration for you... And I hate to break it to you, Dave...but the word 'spunk', here in the UK, is the slang word for a mans semen, or love juice! This is why people are sniggering at the term being used so much. But you weren't to know. Don't worry, dude! May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you and go with you. Tom

I've always heard these referred to as "punks". I guess "punk" is a misnomer. I don't think I can call it a "spunk" without getting weird looks and laughs. But if that's what it's called, that's what it's called.
