This is the first release from my new album The Empathist (coming out March 25, 2025 on Ging Records) and also the first track on the album. I thought a song about hope and the power of song would be a good way to kick things off.
This track features the amazing musicianship and versatility of Jim Hoke (piano and saxophones) and was the first song we recorded when we stepped into Ken Coomer’s Cartoon Moon Recording studio in Nashville, TN in March 2024, for what turned out to be a week of intense playing, improvisation, and hilarity. I feel that my job as a musician is to make people feel something meaningful and positive. In these bleak days the news cycle can seem overwhelmingly dark and disturbing… even more reason for the artists of this world to go digging for illumination because when the night is black, even the tiniest light can be seen for miles. I was thinking about all this when I wrote the song and the song ended up being about that search. I don’t believe that music can change the world, but I know that music changes people and people can change the world.
