A penalties should be imputed to manufacturers whom unjustified refusal to support their own product. We hear so much about eco-movement these days, and same time the mountains of "unsupported" e-waste grow even faster. The more eco-jabber we hear, the more waste they generate.

Linux can be very powerful and as simple or complex as it needs to be. I am sure this will help many people who don't want to spend money they don't have to. I would install Arch on it personally but that's not exactly the most user friendly experience.

Yes, the main goal of this video was for people to give their MacBook a second breath of life instead of eWasting. A lot of people only need a simple laptop solution, which Ubuntu provides perfectly. Arch is a very nice choice as well, the graphical user interface looks great.

I just loaded Linux Mint 21.3 on my 2015 MacBook Air with 4 GB memory using the same method as you used. No wifi driver was installed either. I stuck in a wifi USB stick, selected my wifi and password and then I could download the proper driver after several attempts. After driver finally got loaded, I removed the USB wifi stick and rebooted. This time internal wifi was running properly. Macbook Mint as I call it now, is working very nice. What a nice upgrade for an old Mac.

I have used OpenCore Legacy Patcher to update unsupported Macs to current(well at least Mac OS Ventura) with great results. I recently bought a 2104 Macbook Pro with 2.8Ghz i7 Quad Core, 16GB RAM and 500GB SSD for about $400. I also have an 2007 20" iMac with Intel Dual Core, 6GB RAM and 500GB SSD with Linux Mint Cinnamon installed. I would say that both machines perform better using Linux natively (I recently replaced Mac OS Ventura with Debian 12 Bullseye with KDE Plasma). They are very secure but truthfull so is Mac OS. Maybe most important is to me is that Linux makes the best use of the SSD and needs very little maintenance. Macs (Intel) with Linux are great.

I have heard about OpenCore! Both MacOS and Linux are typically more secure than Windows, which is certainly a plus. Solid state drives are also a game changer for these older machines.

An older lady I know invited me over to help her find out why her internet was no longer working. She had some kind of stand up Mac (or machine built into the monitor?) running a really old iOS version and when I sat down to look at it, I tried the browser and it basically wouldn't let her browse the internet because of some SSL security error/warning that prevent you from getting to any web site. I had to use my phone to google how to fix this and it suggested upgrading the broweser (This was last year and I think it was FireFox running on a single or low double digit version!) I tried to see if I could just upgrade the browser but NOPE! The computer's OS was to old and not supported... a perfectly working computer was NOT allowed to have any internet access because Apple just decided to stop supported software or OS updates for it! Made me really mad that they decided to do that and was thankful that I use Linux and don't have to worry about that.

This was great! Nice! All of the info in one place! I've found that the locking error on apt after a fresh install is usually due to the auto-update that fires in the background. It settles down in a few minutes, but that restart is a nice trick!

Just thought I would make you aware (in case someone else hasn't commented) Rufus is windows only. Balena Etcher is a better cross platform solution for making bootable USB drives. That's what I use in macOS and Windows, and for Linux, I use the built in USB creator because with newer versions of Ubuntu (especially) Etcher is harder to get running due to dependency and other system changes made. Have a great day. :)

For the WiFi, at 5:50 when doing "Updates and other software," notice down at the bottom the "third party software for ... WiFi" check box? Check it. That's usually all it takes. If you do get to the point where you need to fix the WiFi after install and you aren't online, I've heard that people have had success tethering their phone with bluetooth or with a usb cable.

WiFi card drivers for old MacBooks should be available through the driver manager (at least in Linux Mint), so there is no need for those Terminal commands. You just have to ask the driver manager to search for proprietary drivers. Obviously you will still need a wired (Ethernet) connection to do this.

That sounds pretty intense. The video does cover the WiFi issue. I'd guess since you cannot get online, the machine cannot download and install the right drivers for your other hardware. If you can hook it up VIA ethernet or tether it to a phone hotspot by a cable and run Ubuntu updates, see if that helps with any of your hardware issues.

Update. After struggling with Ubuntu 22.04 for my MacBook Pro 5.1 A1286 Late 2008, 8gb Ram and New Samsung SSD, I have tried Linux Mint Mate edition, and it was perfect out of the box. Mate edition is very light (1,9Gb) to download and about 17 Gb after installation with 2 users and a couple of apps like Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp. System itself use only 1Gb RAM. KZbin over Firefox get both of 2 cores to 100%. Poor old guy, but it still working after 15 years. Some kind proud of it. First and very important thing! Cooler didn't work while installation, so I got to cool my Mac manually from outside. Otherwise, the installation fails. In my case the mac startup sound was still there and the solution for this was to boot from macOS CD or get into Apple internet recovery mode with Cmd+Option(Alt)+R to start mac terminal from the menu utilities and type this: /usr/sbin/nvram SystemAudioVolumen=%00 better do it before installation. -For some reason, Ubuntu could not create a right boot partition in my case. But Mint has done it like you show, without any self adjustments. Ubuntu needs to create ext4 for boot partition otherwise it won't install and Mint has created a Vfat partition to boot. -Same problem with Wi-Fi drivers. -Fan drivers- Macfanctld works fine for me and I could install it from appstore. It's a very good opportunity to get your old hardware run better, but still not every time out of the box solution.

Just a few things worth noting: - There are ways to install newer Mac OS on these, had older (2009?) one with unsupported 10.15 some time ago, I guess it's possible to get even newer versions on this one - Rufus, while being a great tool, is Windows-only on other OS you may want to use Balena Etcher, Gnome Disks or something else - Android phones usually work plug n play as LTE modems when using USB tethering - Installing MacOS without another Mac is a terrible expirience - I recommend dual booting instead of completely wiping the drive (and rEFInd as boot manager) - Besides SSD (which is a must have) you can also upgrade RAM on an A1278 - you can go as far as 16 GB on i5/i7 models - These older Macbooks are often still quite expensive so after a bit of refurbishing you can trade one for a much newer ThinkPad just as I did :D

It depends on your use case for a computer. If you mostly do internet browsing, email, document editing, and file management, this will be a great solution for you. If you are tech savvy with Linux, you can do a lot more. It is definitely more useful than an out of date MacOS operating system as the Ubuntu software is supported and up to date. This allows for all websites to work as intended.

What? Why do you remove bcmwl-kernel-source. I've been owining this device type since 2012 and it was actually my first touch with Linux at all approximately a decade ago starting with 13.10. So, I'm using Linux on it for ten years. It's definitely one of the most Linux compatible Macbooks Apple has ever made. Even the Wifi works finde with bcmwl-kernel-source. For sure, I've been using bcmwl-kernel-source fromn that time on and, I haven't got any major problems with it ever since. I had tried b43 sometimes in 2014 but at that time, it didn't work. Maybe this has become better these days but, why not to use bcmwl?
@compumatterllc

After testing multiple models/years of MacBook devices, I have have good results with bcmwl-kernel-source as well as bad. So far, b43 has proven to be more reliable to us for this particular use case.

That is getting pretty old. I would try Lubuntu instead of Ubuntu as it is more lightweight, but it is possible that the hardware will not be able to do well with it.

I was trying to do this exact thing, but I was always ending up with an error, "error: file '/boot/' not found." which I found out requires some sort of changing the image into a dmg format? Did you not face this at all?
@compumatterllc
@compumatterllc 2 ай бұрын
DMG is an Apple specific file format, so I am confused where that information came from as it would only apply to MacOS not Ubuntu. What steps have you done so far? Did you create the bootable USB through Rufus?
@jey8605

@@compumatterllc I did manage to get it to work. I was originally creating the bootable using an older software because I was doing it on the mac itself, but then created the bootable on a newer computer system and it worked.

Great to hear, you do not have to fix what isn't broken. That being said, working off an older operating system does come with some security risks, so long as you are aware of that and able to do what you need to do on the system.

How old is the MacBook Pro? I'd recommend trying a different type of USB. If USB 2.0 (black port), try 3.0 (blue port) on the stick and vise versa. If it's an older model, try it on a 2.0. Hold down option key and start up the machine from a shut down state and see if it shows up. Good luck!

Etcher isn't the most reliable method from my experience, which is why I typically recommend Rufus if you have access to a Windows machine. Are you using a USB 2.0 or 3.0? If you have 3.0, I'd recommend trying 2.0 with Etcher just in case.

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and I just installed the 2024 version of Unbuntu on it. It takes about four minutes to boot up. Is that normal? Also, I tried to follow your instructions to correct the wifi problem but it isn't working for me do you have any tips?

When installing Ubuntu, do you recall if you checked the "install third party drivers" section? If not, try reinstalling and see if checking that helps. If it is slow, I would also recommend upgrading your hard drive to a solid state drive (SSD) if you haven't already.

Hi! good video! how i can turn on the keyboard backlight in macbook air? greetings from Brazil.
@compumatterllc
@compumatterllc 9 ай бұрын
On the top row of keyboard keys, do you have two buttons that look like a sun with a dotted line beneath the sun rays? Try pressing those and see if that turns on the keyboard light. Otherwise, I would recommend looking up keyboard backlight for your model which you can find at the bottom of the laptop. It should start with an A and have 5 characters total. You may also need the EMC number from the bottom. If you know the year of your air, you can also look up MacBook Air Keyboard Backlight Button (insert year here). Hope this helps!
