Great Big Story

Great Big Story

Күн бұрын

The plush mangroves in Western Sri Lanka have provided families with critical resources for generations. Sadly, in recent years the mangroves have slowly depleted in size and nutrients. Douglas Thisera, is working hard to change this. Known as the Mangrove Master, Thisera has spent the last 16 years replanting and conserving mangroves in his district. Along with community activists, Douglas has helped plant 2 million saplings in the area. He’s on a mission to bring the mangroves back to their former glory.

If only rest of the world could follow the lead of such people then there is hope for our world. We must preserve our ecosystem. That's the only way we can survive. Massive respect for this lad and everyone who has contributed to this.

Are the subtitles accurate? it seems like the length of time the man is speaking is really long compared to the English translation. Maybe the words in the language are just longer and have more syllables?
@lismiles8953

yoshi8799 The general translation is correct but he is more expressive in his sinhalese descriptions than the translation itself :)

yoshi8799 Also words in the language can take a bit longer than English. It's actually a mixture of both length and content translated

Ezehelm Sinhala is inspired from Pali and Sanskrit. Also the languages you mentioned above have many simillar words with sinhala, because all from South asia. If you ask me a language that "mostly" resembles sinhala, that would be Dhivehi ( Maldives dominant language)

Ok...I get it..but saving more land to be dedicated to mangroves so you can catch an extra crab or two (I’m under exaggerating) probably isn’t producing as much food as a farm.

Shamil Arifeen He wants to save the mangroves to allow for fishing of them and maintain his environment and the environment of the inhabitants, I get it, but from a purely economical perspective, you would most likely get more food from the farm as the wildlife will still be there, I doubt they are building over so much that animals are dying and can’t recover in population.
