Listening in Australia..what a wonderful interview. Am so glad that Giles has followed in the footsteps of his father. What a gift we have being able to hear The Beatles Revolver (Abbey Road, Let It Be, SGT Pepper and the White Album) reimagined audio wise for our times. A splendid time guaranteed for all 👍

Remember that Geoff Emerick the engineer came up with the "sound" and effects on this landmark album. He was probably as important as George Martin in the final version of the album.

You have this video titled as a remaster, but the whole point of this project is it is a REMIX. We have had remasters of The Beatles albums previously, cleaned up versions of the stereo mix. Giles has explained the difference very well before as in the differences between preparing a car for sale. Remastering is like cleaning the car's bodywork and upholstery to make it presentable, whereas remixing is like stripping the car down to it's component parts, cleaning and repairing each of those, and then rebuilding the car.

I think it’s worth while to remix the previous albums. I enjoyed the new Revolver remix. Although, some of the vocals did sound a bit weird on a few tracks. Other than that, I enjoyed it! If they can get the vocals sounding natural on “Rubber Soul” It would be a real treat!

Demixing in its current technological state has been around since at least 2019 in the form of Deezer's Spleeter algorithm and Izotope's RX editing software. Peter Jackson's tech it a tinkered version of Spleeter, so he's late to the table with this despite what EMI and Jackson would like you to believe.
@strangedaysindeed92 жыл бұрын
And the most funny part is, the big PR talk on the Hollywood Bowl remix in 2016 (!) was: "we can now finally do it justice thanks to the revolutionary demixing technology". And they've been using it as early as 2015 on the 1+ remixes, though sparsely.
@disneyscott982 жыл бұрын
but it's not nearly as clear and clean separation as they have here.
@stereofidelic67 Жыл бұрын
@@disneyscott98 Oh it's much clearer on Revolver - granted. But that's not down to any real improvements in the capabilities of the software IMO. It's down to the fact that it was used on 4 individual multi-tracks, meaning the algorithm didn't have as much instrumentation to separate as, say, a mono or 2 track stereo recording. The actual effort levied on the software was relatively light, as it was only being asked to separate 2 or 3 instruments at a time / per each of the 4 tracks. Catch my drift?

Hey Giles, why such heavy bass on these remixes, especially Abbey Road and Revolver? As a big fan of McCartneys playing, his bass no longer feels organic to the other instruments, instead it’s so loud it makes my speakers buzz (both in my home and in the car). For me, your fathers mono mixes, and his Abbey Road stereo mix, are still the best way to hear the Beatles as they were meant to be heard.

Giles needs to get some more training in sound recording. Cranking up the bass and pushing back the percussion instruments ( cymbals, tambourines etc) kind of smothers the detail. The original still sounds superior to me.

So Paul and Ringo didn't think to mention any of this? Of course it's entirely possible that they have a drums and bass bias. Together, they represent the entire bottom end "punch" of The Beatles. Anyway, I quite like the punch, and I heard all of these records when they first came out. TomAto tomAHto.
@michaelharrington75 Жыл бұрын
It's not like Giles mixed these albums by himself in seclusion, and then released them to everyone's surprise. He had Sam Okell helping him. Plenty of ears (including Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Sean Lennon, and Olivia and Dhani Harrison) heard the mixes, and approved them to be released. If you like the original mixes, listen to them. No one is forcing you to switch to the new stereo mixes.
@nathananthony75172 жыл бұрын
Not worthwhile? Revolver was a far more worthwhile remix than the White Album, Let It Be and Abbey Road. It might even have been more worthwhile than Pepper. It was a fantastic remix. Now, whether it'll be worthwhile to remix Please Please Me is another question. But, Revolver was the most worthwhile remix of the bunch.
@michaelharrington75 Жыл бұрын
Please Please Me definitely needs a new stereo remix. The stereo mixes from 63 to 66 weren't great. They had some strange panning on the early stereo mixes.
