I’m gonna have to disagree with Chip on the rear of the DMC12. Those taillights are iconic, and are probably the most 80s looking car feature ever. That’s the one part of the design I wouldn’t touch.

The Delorean was designed by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. He's responsible for some remarkable design examples (mk1 Golf/Scirocco, BMW M1, Lotus Esprit, De Tomaso Mangusta, Maserati Ghibli, etc). He has a very specific design philosophy. I normally stick up for Chip, but this rendition takes away from Giorgetto's design aesthetic. Sometime it's better just to leave the originals alone.

Agree Giugiaro was great he did previously Lotus Esprit, BMW M1, DeTomaso Mangusta, Porsche Tapiro.. all with similar ques in style so maybe he wanted to bring the European success into the US market the main issue was that as Chip mentioned DeLorean upset many GM leading boarder guys, so he left by it's own creating his own brand that is why this car suffered from what we know as cheap build quality by cutting all expensive materials & parts costs which translated and resulted in what DeLorean car it is ..

After having wrenched on at least a few thousand of these back in the day I can honestly say there was much room for improvement from new. By the time the DMC12 left Dunmurray there were 2 pages of mechanical retrofits alone! As for the body, the front/rear fascias never fit correctly as their mounting systems were ill conceived costing John Z a small fortune in man hours to correct. I made a special pry bar in the shape of a P trap to lift the center of the front fascia up by bending the metal panel under it. There were also many a cracked front fender so to that end fabricating a new DMC13 would be better in some alloy with a stainless wrap. If I remember correctly there were horrendous reception problems with the stereos in the DMC12 on account of static caused by bare metal at speed. Also, you Foose Folk need to add a baby bump to that hood so the rear flippin tire can actually be stowed. And don't let any of that Lotus epoxy-coated-buffoonery influence the suspension design for godsakes.

My father in law was a product manager for DMC , he was there for the foundations of the factory being laid into the ground until it closed. In its time it was a high tech factory with robot type moving platforms believe it or not ,The biggest mistake was how quickly the car went from designed to manufacture, I think it was 2 years which is crazy , most probably would be around 5 to 10 years 🤔.. the factory was also built in the time of the “troubles”situation in Ireland and it got fire bombed destroying plans and other important information, but amazingly both sides of these factions worked under the same roof without issue..it has a very interesting history, Back to the future film appearance was just part of it.

I understand Chip's take on the DeLorean, it's not perfect, however, changing the design of that car, would be like looking at the Mona Lisa, and deciding to make her into a blonde instead of a brunette, or something ridiculous like that. That is the design, whether we like it or not, and it is Iconic, and a permanent part of Automotive History.

I own a DeLorean DMC-12 and Personally I wouldn't change a single design aspect of the DeLorean DMC-12, exterior or interior. I don't not think it was dated when it came out and it still stands out as a beautiful car today, especially the interior was so clean and simple it was really ahead of it's time. I remember hearing John DeLorean say in an interview, "I wanted the interior to still look good 40 years from now. " And it does. Mechanically and electronically the car is and has always been a nightmare. I bought my car with 6k original mike's on it and the car show show condition. Sadly that's not the case anymore. The car has never run in any real way. It's a giant, expensive paperweight that breaks my heart every day I see it. I've sent the car out to be fix and had it come back more damaged, I spent my saving getting it relates by the DeLorean dealership in Southern California and the car. Dies before I could get it home and so many things were just done wrong got he car and they refuse to take any ownership of responsibility. So basically I gave them my life savings so they could make my car even worse. It's so depressing. I keep promising my nephew I'll pick him up from school in it and I can't. I've missed out on special event because I didn't have my car. It's so depressing. My dream car has been nothing but a nightmare.

That's some MC Escher action going with the drawing. I like the rear change but I'm not feeling the front end. Thats the trouble with redesigning iconic vehicles. As a former DeLorean owner and all-time Foose fan, I was so excited for this. But this just wasn't it. I like his idea to bring the rear bumper around, but the front looks so plain now. Changing the angle made it look like an 80s Mustang or worse. The compact design is what makes the car work, and now it's too long (especially with the MC Escher drawing). I like that he didn't change the wheels though, and improved the door line. The taillights were also really special, and I wish he would have kept that look but just make them deeper. The biggest issue with the car was that it went from a mid-engine design to rear engine... just to fit golf clubs -- sounds familiar (cough C8 cough), and that's coming from somebody with one ordered.

I'll admit I kept looking through comments for someone who would have commented on the DeLorean story and I just didn't see it. I wouldn't say that it was so much John Z's mouth getting the better of him so much as just that he apparently was a threat. He actually pissed people off on a few fronts, particularly the British Parliament when he decided to found the company in Ireland which by itself was a whole bowl of wax because of the relationship of both nations. There was also the talk about the cocaine and money laundering, which come to find out was never proven and later come out to be a false accusation as a "legitimate" front to hose him down. There were also the other auto manufacturers who saw this as a potential threat to their sales. Many people had it out for the guy and when he died, he was both broke and living on a farm with the tattered remains of his family. The complete story is out there and those are just pieces of the puzzle.

There is in the drawing a clear change in height of the roof line, the side windows are narrower. To really get an idea of the merits of the changes proposed...this just confuses things. In any event I thought the original rear facia one of the most successful aspects of the original design. The C pillars really date the car to me. Difficult to change though. I respect your work, but the front end restyle looks like a Renault Alpine, and the rear like something AMC would have done for the Javelin. Not your best effort. That said, I don't think the design of the DMC-12 is without fault. IMO, it is just about the most milquetoast iteration of the 60s and 70s "Atomic Doorstop" design aesthetic, and the powertrain is laughably weak.

I like the idea of unifying the rear cap, bottom sills, and front and I like the overall tail treatment (especially the tailpipes). The taillights are pretty iconic and I'd have a hard time changing them. I might have gone with a dimensional look to the taillight lenses to keep the grill effect and use the light and shadow to soften it a bit. The reorienting of the signals to thin strips at the bottom works, but I think stacking the reverse lights above is too much. The front is where I deviate. This looks like a Chrysler product from the 80s and not a good one. Maybe a Shadow or if you want to get European a Citroen BX and it's not a good look. I personally like the front "cap" and would've kept it. To keep some 80s-ness in it might have played with a full length grill on the front with retractible light covers a la Cougar or Alfa Romeo Montreal. This car needs the busyness of lines and grids to balance the clean stainless form of the rest of the car IMO. I wish I could render a car like Chip can, all things considered. I also enjoyed the experiment with the front/rear/profiles all in one sketch but not sure it helped sell the front end design!

Love the new look with one exception...would not lower it. Yeah the v6 was definitely underpowered. Would have been better to borrow the ol' Buick v6 with turbo :) I think a pearl clear over the stainless would have helped its looks too.

Gotta say this is first time I have ever disagreed and disliked a Foose redesign. Still admire his crazy amazing abilities.

Fascinating to watch him draw.. a true artist ! I'm liking the new rear end... on the front, sorry the original 4 head lights are iconic to me and immediately identify the original as a DeLorean, where this new front...is too main stream and does not have a unique character

A "true artist" who made a drawing of a car where you can see the front, complete side, and rear all in the same shot.

Very nice up dated version! I think the black rubber stuff was an American necessity due to import laws, our British vehicles had to adorn horrible rubber bumpers. Just like the MGBs of the 1980s! This was apparently adopted for safety reasons! Although, if you ask me , I think American officials were worried our little sports cars we’re going to sell too well, so they had to make them look ugly! Even the E type got a rubber dress! 😂 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸

Pretty unanimous, people don’t like this redesign. How dare you get rid of the iconic tail lights. Don’t mess with perfection.

Mid 80's Toyota Starlet Front + chopping at mid riff'+ '70 Challenger rear face = True! While it got a bit more apetizing generally it kind of lost it's charm? It's not negative or positive... it's too acceptable =o)

Love chips renditions, but sad to say that in this case it missed it. The iconic elements are completely gone. The only area the DeLorean could improve is the technical side, engine etc.. Well, just found one slight improvement, the taillights are nice, originals are iconic an to be left alone. The doorlines are perfect as they were, that also wouldn’t to be changed. But hey, not all drawing have to be perfect. It takes a lot of guts to take this challenge at all.... keep doing what you’re doing chip, you’re a-okay

That really hurts my brain to see both the front and the back of the car on one image. If you wanted to showcase the back, you could have maybe drawn just a 1/4 view of the back as an inset in the corner maybe?
