In the original Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, I made a challenge video where I beat the game in as few turns as I could. The recent Remake that released on Nintendo Switch has several changes that make the challenge super different, so in this video I'm going to tackle the Low Turn Count run in the Remake!

I don't know if it's still the case but I remember creators in the last couple of years mentioning that streaming on your main channel can cause issues with the algorithm as your if your stream vods don't have a high watch time it will affect the chances of KZbin recommending any of your videos. It's why so many creators have separate channels for their streams and VODs, so they don't cause these issues with their main channel.

I think the point of that Big Bob-Omb ambush in Pirate’s Grotto is because most new players would likely have fought every enemy up to that point and they didn’t want a boring walk back, so they threw in one surprise encounter.

You mentioned first strikes felt like they counted like a turn, but didn’t increase the counter for the first strikes on the goombas in chapter 6. That’d put you at 83 total turns for the remake. Awesome video as always though!

I probably should have clarified more: I think first strikes where you enter the battle and defeat the enemy should count. Using first attack and defeating an enemy in the overworld does not count as you never entered the battle. The reason I didn’t count Artur U’s extra first attack kills is because he grinded levels with first strikes to get them, not because those specific kills (embers and bones) should count as a turn.

Personally, I figured that the reason that they healed you after Cortez in the remake was so that you wouldn't have to restart the Cortez fight if you died during the small platforming sequence outside the ship. Don't know if that's the actual reason, but...having died during said section on a few occasions in the Gamecube version, I certainly welcome the change.

Possible, but if that's the reason, the "try again" feature on the Game Over screen makes such a change redundant anyways.

@@kaidurbin Perhaps. Haven't seen what happens if Mario hits 0 HP in the overworld instead of during battle, so I'm not sure where the "Try Again" option would place the player in this particular instance. Either way, I don't mind the change, but each to their own, of course.

@@gamemasterseven Just to be sure, I tested it, and as I already suspected, dying outside of combat and retrying will put you at the beginning of the room you were in prior to the Game Over screen. As Mario must perform a screen transition after the Cortez fight to fall into water, the "try again" option is unlikely to force you to fight Cortez again.

​@@gamemasterseven Come to think of it, I think the main reason you're healed after Cortez is because of the Crystal Star. I just beat Hooktail on a replay and was fully healed after that fight too. Yet, not too long after that, Frankly reminded me to rest up at an inn if I was at low health, a line that would make more sense if I wasn't automatically healed. The remake probably changed this for pacing reasons, as it would feel a little weird for the partners to say "Let's go to the Thousand Year Door!" and then immediately crash at a hotel.

Great video as always Bringle, It's honestly tempting to try something like this for myself! Chapter 5 I think has the most potential for skipping turns since you're able to use i-frames to get past the second set of Bill Blasters on the way to Boat Curse and a well timed Yoshi hover to skip another on the way back; and speaking of that room with the extra Bulky Bob-Omb encounter, you actually are able to skip that fight using i-frames from running away so overall that's at least an extra three turns saved just from that one room! Also, Shadow Sirens Skip still works in the remake it just requires a spin jump over the railing instead of a jump. Couldn't you technically defeat Hooktail in 2 turns already? All you would need to do is use the hammer turn 1 with the cricket/frog badge to lower Hooktail defense then make sure Goombella is in peril with mega rush p equipped and then multibonk with 4 bounces to get the other 19 damage. Then after hooktail heals you can just multibonk again for the last 10 damage?

Other than Hooktail, I think the most likely turn to skip would be the turn spent on the Red Bones in Chapter 8 with a bit over 100 more star points. You need to be level 13 and I think Bringle was almost level 12 after Gloomtail. Bringle could have gotten about 7 more star points by killing the required Bulky Bob-omb normally instead of blowing it up, but the rest would have to be gotten with at least two if not three well timed Merlee curses. I don't know the Merlee mechanics well enough to say if it's actually possible though.

I think you can still skip the second shadow siren fight by spin jumping over the fence on the second bridge to skip the trigger, but that might count as a glitch and not apply to your rules

Anyone else wish they had better built-in ways to make the game more challenging? I was trying a double pain run and was surprised at how easy the game still is, since only Mario takes the double damage and can just hide behind his partner. These challenge runs are a little janky by comparison.

Even though I agree it would be nice to have more in-game tools to add some challenge, I think it shows the strength of the Badge system that you have a wide latitude of difficulty you can achieve by just ignoring or utilizing certain badges or kinds of badges. E.g.: Hammerman + No Quick Change is surprisingly difficult for a build that is just one mandatory badge and one banned badge. That doesn't feel very "janky" or arbitrary to me, but YMMV.

Livestreaming on KZbin in my experience is significantly better both as a streamer and a viewer in almost every aspect except for chat culture being kind of bland. But honestly, incorporating your subs through KZbin with streaming is so great and I can only fully recommend you do so if you want to stream!! Also, channel members with KZbin that get the emotes can use the emotes on comments to your videos which is pretty cool

​He explains it in the video, it's because in the game's code, it's not counted as a turn until Mario can actually select an attack. In the code, the first strike, whether it be from Mario or the enemy, is more of a pre-battle move, like it's just the way the battle started and not part of the battle itself. So "technically" the first strike isn't part of a turn, which is why the other video doesn't count them. In my opinion, though, it should count for a challenge run like this, otherwise it gets too grindy like with the Buzzy strategy shown

as someone who actually needs accessibility options in a lot of games, i seriously think kinds of changes like the one at 30:30 should be optional. all those kinds of changes do is make the game very slightly easier Sometimes, which isn't inherently more accessible to disabled players - a player who struggles with highly saturated colors, flashing lights, color blindness, other vision problems, etc. wouldn't really benefit from that, and those players are usually pretty much totally ignored when "accessibility" changes are made... while it's probably great for kids who don't know how to do inventory and resource management yet, or people who only really play for the story, it's not particularly helpful for Anyone Else. if they're going to make you heal after bosses, it should either be consistently after every boss (and something you can turn off) or just not at all.
