50 years of planning to build a runway so close to the inner-city that pretty much every single riverfront suburb in Brisbane is now subject to hundreds of low flying planes producing noise. It took a place like Hong Kong much less than that to build an artificial island, a brand new airport, kilometres of train line and highway road, two massive bridges and one underwater tunnel to keep the noise away from populated areas.

My first visit to Brisbane airport was over 50 years ago. Back then the terminal was a disused aircraft hanger left over from WWII and there was only one small runway. I've never forgotten that day I saw off my older brother as he set off to Canberra to join the Australian Air Force. I dreamed of the day when I would be a customer of Australia's air travel and take my first flight. The day did come, but the terminal had changed to a brick box with orange seats inside. I had to walk across the tarmac and climb the stairs at the back of the aircraft. The excitement of that day has never left me. All these years later, I still travel to Brisbane to see how the airport has grown and the pride I feel in Brisbane's growth as a major international city. I've got quite a few local, interstate and international flights under my belt and can't wait until the day I can fly again. Congratulations Brisbane on a great job well done and many congratulations to the Brisbane Airport Corporation. And thanks for all the memories and for those yet to come.

They have to fly into the wind, so over-the-bay operations is not possible. However, they relied on that as their all-time preference as first to calm the community, and then that mode slowly switched to "midnight preference" which also cannot be implemented on many nights because of visibility, wind speed, etc. This strategy helped them build the new runway and destroy most of Brisbane's inner-city and desirable riverfront suburbs.

They ruined most of Brisbane's inner-city. Their initial EIS document stated that it would be easier for people from more affluent suburbs to sell up and move (compared to people from areas of lower social class). This single item is a clear indication of how much they cared about local communities.
@mprice77794 жыл бұрын
Whoever managed community consultation failed in my view. Residents in our suburb (20km away) were not told we'd be in the flight path, yet the air traffic from this new runway (50+ aircraft some days) is so noisy we can't hear each other talking. I am one of many unhappy residents in Annerley , East Brisbane, Camp Hill, Balmoral. The airport is on a bay yet the flights descend over our houses instead. They also come in low from quite a way out rather than being required (like they are in most other capitsl cities in Oz) to stay at altitude for longer. This project is having adverse effects on hundreds of Brisbsne residents mental health, stress and anxiety ....and is only set to get worse unless something changes.

Self congratulation, opinion stated as fact and virtue signalling by people that made a hell of a lot of money out of the project is just an exercise in narcissism. Try watching the video without the ridiculous background music and slow down the editing. There is no mention of a few things 1. The runway wasn’t need immediately and the option of waiting and building the runway in to the bay was tossed aside by the politician egos 2. The runway is a white elephant as there does not exist the terminal and other support infrastructure (like reasonably priced parking ) but hey there is a 24 hour Woolies down the road 3. The Politician egos demanded that a tunnel be built from the city to the airport so that a) they could get to their flights quicker and b) they wouldn’t feel embarrassed when other politicians visited (I refer to the story of one QLD premier going on about being taxied on the tarmac in Sydney for 20 mins and saying it wouldn’t happen in Brisbane- just borrow some more money and send us broke so people travelling wont be inconvenienced). The people of Brisbane struggle with peak hour traffic while the excessively tolled tunnels are running at 20-30% capacity. The money for the tunnel AND THAT STUPID TRAIN (that no one uses because it costs too much and if you are flyinG the last thing you want to do is GET ON A TRAIN) should have been spent on targeted smaller tunnels or rather “covered trenches” (cost of construction exponentially cheaper and running costs the same) that responded to the needs of the city rather than putting all the money into a tunnel that all of Brisbane said “but why put it there, there are so many other places in need”. The trenches would have been given to local contractors and designer and paid for over a ten year period, there would have been community consultation and absolute transparency with community member on all committees as watchdogs. 4. There is no mention about the suburbs now in the flight path that have been wrecked. Hey KRudd you go a run at the PM in no small part because you were going to stop this runway and move it into the bay. But that was when you lived in what is now the flight path. Now that you and your wife have profited enough to be part of the global elite you don’t give it another thought (and while i am on KRudd - mate, stop talking up China you corrupt sell out. You pompous self righteous arse no matter how you want to try to explain that you and your wife didnt rip off the country and continue to profit in the extreme for selling us out ....... fact dont care about pompous indignation and late at night when you are alone with your thoughts have the guts calculate what your price was. No politician should exit office with these enormous amounts of money and be able to profit from contact made during you time in office because you were there because we trusted you and you were getting paid so any IP or good will you establish is the property by the county not you.) But no politicians yet have the guts to do the right thing and get the ball rolling with relocation plans. It will happen eventually, there is no real other option. This is what happens when a project is run correctly, success on every level instead of bean counter and CEOs trying to maximise their bonuses, and at the end of the day, it is under budget, no environmental or other fines, no blowouts, no unforeseen issues, and most importantly no injuries or deaths. It is now time to move these fine people into rebuilding our manufacturing industries, start with the defense budget, build steel mills, and move onto boats, tanks, transportation, planes and arms.

Any chance Melbourne might get a second runway seeing it equal to Sydney in population and hasn’t had an upgrade in around 45 years. Or isn’t it a marginal electorate ?
@shhmule4 жыл бұрын
The difference with MEL, is they have a crosswind runway capable of handling up to Boeing 767 sized aircraft. They use both runways in cohesion to increase the amount of movements, and while not as useful as a simultaneous parallel operation, it certainly helps handle the load. Brisbane only ever had the crosswind 14/32 which was used for private and charter operations, and wasn't suitable for helping with the airline volumes.

@@shhmule interesting because I can’t think of another international city of 5 million anywhere else that has such potential dangerous procedures for a lack of federal funding . Victorians would ‘get’ what I’m hinting at.

Do you remember when BAC tried to force airlines to pay for the upgrade almost a decade ago, what a great joke that was 😂😂 purely because for years prior, BAC was giving away profits to its investors, rather than investing in the airport itself. Wasted years, wasted opportunity 😢 Sure, the construction is a great achievement, no doubt about it. Congrats to those involved in getting it to completion, you should be proud. I guess at least now it is not the shittest international airport in Australia, hooray! Just not sure how BAC could pat itself on the back after literally holding the city and airlines to ransom for years. Imagine the boost to the local economy had this upgrade been properly funded 2, maybe 3 decades ago (it was first spoken about 5 decades ago!). We need better oversight on privately owned critical infrastructure like this.

Brisbane Airport like to keep aircraft movements extremely well hidden, but passengers around 6,000,000 pa, Gatwick (single runway) 46, 000,000 pa. Not really surprising airlines weren't too keen to cough up!
@shhmule4 жыл бұрын
Gatwick doesn't have many small aircraft services. Brisbane's main movements are small turboprops to regional QLD. The sheer number of movements was congesting the single runway. At a guess, over 80% of movements would be a Boeing 737 or smaller at BNE.

I can't concentrate with the constant interuption of low flying loud plane noise when I am trying to work from home. I have to shut doors and windows due to the noise. I hate the new runway. Certainly a FAILURE on the objective to provide the community with transparent and accurate information. A swath of Brisbane suburbs, previously unaffected by flight paths, are now virtually unliveable. Most of residents in those suburbs were caught by surprise because they believed the false narrative put out by BAC that planes would take off and land over the bay. Lots of lies. But hey, who cares about the mental health of residents of your host city?
@flynnsmith14354 жыл бұрын
@@karenwotherspoon8297 Clearly you don't understand how flying works. You see, a plane must land *into* the wind, meaning if the wind is blowing from the bay into the city, then the aircraft must land from the city to avoid accidents. So unless you want a bunch of planes crashing in your suburbs, then i'd suggest sucking it up and moving to a suburb which isn't near an airport :) It's like living near a theme park and complaining about the noise. No one forced you to live there? If you hate it so much, then move.

Brisbane is a New Word City? Really, with restaurants that close on a Saturday night at 9pm, bus services that stop at 7pm on a weekday from the CBD and no 24hr supermarkets. Even NZ's small regions have that. Brisbane is close to the most boring city in Australia, There is nothing special about it at all. The fact they made a docu about laying some concrete on flat land, speaks volumes about how Brisbane is boring. Wow, what a engineering marvel, you laid some concrete. Pat yourselves on the back for that. Challenges - So this is on par with the channel tunnel is it? We wanted to use recycled water, what like how all water is recycled?

You should have seen it in the late 1990s when the Sydney 2000 Olympics seemingly sent it into a near recession. The city looks more substantial now since 2002 when they built that white-walled tower with the aerial on the roof and that spider's web night illuminated building next door to it. Nevertheless, it is a great piece of infrastructure on display here.
