I really enjoyed this vid JH. I sometimes fast forward through cleetus and jackstand building engines because I'm not to bad with working on gas combustion engines, but I get lost with diesel. So I watched every min of this, and really appreciated it! 🍻👍💯

Hey brother get an oven and stick it out in the back corner of your shop then you can heat up things like that gear to a specific temp and know you’re not messing up the steel with too much heat and know that it has been heated evenly we do that at the mill I worked at because you definitely don’t want to change the hardness of a gear that is that important

Like when you crack the case on a motorcycle and you're going to replace connecting rods crank and all that or put it back together you put connecting rod in the freezer and you put the crank in the oven it's quite the technique I watched a Yamaha authorized specialist service center do that blew me away but then does it work the guy does it he never has a bearing issue or a crankish should I say
@michaelfowler8289
@michaelfowler8289 2 жыл бұрын
Next time instead of using the torch try heating it in the oven to 425° I think you will find it will work better maybe not but I've seen it done usually the press is necessary your snap-on dead blow plastic and Hammer lightly tapping will put it on it's a more of a tap to fit machine style machine shop style setup love it though man you don't see too many people who know these old techniques

a blocking/sanding tech that will produce the grippy surface you want, block it 45° from one end to the other than come back at the opposite 45° will leave a cross hatch surface. slowly running overlapping figure8s will also leave you a flat grippy finish.

You hear people say you gotta freeze one snd heat the other but what you just did was decreased the inside diameter of the gear causing it to bind you really want to either heat one or cool one not do heat and freezing on both
@jeffyeo3762
@jeffyeo3762 2 жыл бұрын
Lay off the pipe and maybe pay attention and you would’ve noticed that’s exactly what he did he put the camshaft in the freezer shrinking it and then he heated up the cam gear with a torch which expanded it
@GULIVERSOFFROAD
@GULIVERSOFFROAD 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffyeo3762 you need to lay off the rock and read my comment better when you heat one and freeze one it makes the parts bind you only want to heat one or freeze one not do both damn read and understand a comment before you reply, that is why he had to press it on if he would have ony froze the gear using no heat it would have dropped on or vise versa

I never touch an engine with sand paper like that because the tiny hard grains on the sand paper can comer off and drop in to the engine oil galleries, Its not that pistons you should worry about covering cause compressed air will blow them clean, but the oil galleries that were not plugged are just waiting to flow all that debris and oil to those bearing shells that are about to be scarred with fine sandpaper grit. I only use what Cummins recommends and that is scotch bright cleaning cloth and or a draw file. as there is no granite sand in that. That old burn out block probably will never care but I did shudder at seeing that sanding JH.
