At the end where he says he didn't press like cos it would seem funny he's meaning he was looking at his ex's Instagram and thought it would be weird if he pressed like on her photo- but yeah he's telling some truth in this song. We obsess over other peoples lives when they aren't really showing the truth of their own reality. We show only what we want people to see - the best, often manufactured image. We often turn to Instagram or other SNS to distract us from our own realities. We can feel lonely even if we're with other people because we're used to living online more than in the flesh. Our avatars often have better lives than we do. People definitely are too absorbed by social media these days in an unhealthy way. like you say instead of connecting to each other face to face when you are in the same room you pick your phone up and stay inside your own world. My daughter is uncomfortable speaking to strangers on the phone (to order takeaway for example) but is happy to send messages online... text replacing the voice . People need to keep a healthy balance ;)

This song really hit it home for me, because he beautifully put together a narrative that I totally relate to. The idea of feeling lonely because we attach so much of our own value to what we post online, and how much attention we receive back, can be extreme, at least for me. Seeing all these media influencers, celebrities, friends etc. doing great things with their lives that you constantly compare yourself to; you end up losing sight of what you have achieved yourself. When you post something and attach personal value to it, you end up viewing its reception as on par with your self-worth. But also his line of "knowing too much makes you miserable" I totally agree with. We are constantly bombarded with information everyday (whether you believe it's because we're in a mediated free-flowing space is up to you), but too much shit just becomes too much. We really need to take a step back sometimes, and realise that it is okay to not know everything, and it is okay to not want to engage with this information constantly. I rambled but I just love this song, so damn much.

The black screen is a moment to see your reflection and see yourself. At least that’s what I heard. Could just be a dark screen, but man adding that extra layer is deep. But Dean did an interview talking about his thought process when writing this song. He was just writing this songs for himself to connect to himself since no one was talking about instagram and people’s addiction to it. Plus he had some deep depression at the time and he kept on going on instagram and he would feel himself slowly drowning the farther he scrolled down his feed. He talked more about it but those points stood out a lot. He writes a lot of songs mostly for himself, like songs he wished were in the world and he just happens to share it with us too.
