I grew up on Fort Knox Kentucky in the 1960's and 70's. Best time ever growing up. It was truly the most proudest and patriotic place I ever lived. My father was a Master Sergeant who taught Tank School. Loved watching the tanks target practice. Especially at night. As kids we ran everywhere on the base and in the woods wearing our dad's helmets and eating M.R.E.'s. and filling canteens with Kool Aid. Gosh I sure miss those days.

There were multiple copies of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, etc. created to distribute in the colonies depending on the document the states. So the originals can be kept in the vault and original copies are on display in the National museums.

I live in Louisville, KY, which is the largest city in the state, known primarily for the Kentucky Derby and also where they make the baseball bats. Fort Knox is not at all far away from Louisville, especially the southwestern suburbs where I grew up. I can remember hearing canons going off during training a lot. I visited Fort Knox quite a few times as a kid. For a while I had a neighbor who's father was stationed there and we'd get to eat MRE's which, while dead boring to the soldiers I imagine, was a treat for a kid. You'll find Fort Knox in at least a couple of classic movies like Stripes (the beginning scenes of which were shot here in Louisville), and of course Goldfinger.

Back in the early 1980s, I took a tour of Fort Knox with my family. We did not get to see the vault but we did see and hear the history of it. Most presidents have wanted to see the vault and the gold inside, but they do not get to demand entry.

Amazing how much United States history I have learned from your channel. I have no clue what I was doing during History class but obviously I wasn't paying attention. Thanks to Amanda A. and BP1 & BP2 for updating my historical knowledge. Peace and love all.

Oh trust me I’m recommending a lot of these because I didn’t learn them until I saw them on KZbin either 😂 Other countries say we don’t learn much about their countries and I’m always like “trust me we didn’t learn much about our history either”

My father at the time the gold was being shifted from place to place and especially to Fort Knox was an employee of the Railway Express Agency and was what they called a Special Agent. The agents rode in the freight cars, armed to the teeth. The Railway Express was actually what became of the old Wells Fargo Express. Movies about the old bad guys robbing the WELLS FARGO stagecoaches were always popular in the old Westerns. I began working for the Railway Express in 1963 as a truck driver and it paid my may through six years of college. Even then when certain valuables were getting shipped and required ARMED SERVICE, I remember getting an old (and I mean OLD) pump action Winchester 12gauge with 2 shells wired to it in a small bag.

The importance of the documents is the knowledge that they exist. , The importance of being able to protect them is that they are literally irreplaceable.

The artifacts kept at Fort Knox were not intended to be there for a long period. They were there only for safekeeping until WW2 was over so the chances of them being destroyed by German bombing were nullified. After the war they were returned to their previous location for display to the public. Fort Knox was not meant for long term artifact storage

Please react to " Robin Williams as the American flag" 🎉 It's 5 and 1/2 minutes long. It's funny but also very respectful and may put a tear in some people's eyes.

Those United States, documents, and European treasures were only held there during the war. The Constitution, Bill of Rights, and other things are on daily display in the national archives in Washington DC. I’ve seen the declaration of independence. It is quite faded. They said one reason it got faded was because it was displayed out in the sun for several days during a festival for the 100th anniversary of the signing. The bullion depository is not all that isolated. Probably 10,000 cars a day drive within a half of a mile of it. But, since the terrorist attacks from Muslim extremists started, about 30 years ago, the perimeter has been expanded twice with two more fences surrounding the perimeter and trees have been cut down to allow for a clear field of fire.

Most people don't know that the US has a second Bullion Depository near the US Military Academy at West Point, New York. As of 2019, it held 22% of the US Gold reserves. The US Mint at West Point operates a facility that specializes in the production of limited edition, collector quality coins.

I agree about the items that are obviously extremely valuable but also kind of useless if they are just locked in a vault. It would be tragic if an original copy of the Declaration of Independence or Magna Carta were stolen but we wouldn’t loose our rights that those documents grant…so I agree with what you’re saying where the real value is in people getting to see and learn about and connect with the historical significance. Very interesting video…

Another excellent suggestion, Amanda. Sadly, we have strayed from the original intent of gold standard and now just print more paper money regardless of how much is in the vaults. I definitely understand BP1 wanting to see the original historical items when we go to a museum. But there are too many looney activists willing to deface or destroy those items if they have any opportunity to do it. I learned some things I was not aware of here. Thanks guys for doing another fantastic reaction.- Hawk
