A random thing to point out is that the red price labeled ‘regular’ is our gas price. In almost every gas station in America, the price in green is for diesel fuel.

We didn't have horses. We had cows, pigs, and chickens. As kids we rode the pigs and cows. Once, my brother climbed on one of the nearly grown beef cows. They were used to us though and it just stood there chewing cud and ignored my brother thumping it's ribs. So I thought I'd help it get moving......with my bb gun. Hit it right in the butt. Thing moved then. Have you seen cartoons where someone does circles in the air before falling? Yea, my brother did that. I found it hilarious, but he didn't seem to see the humor.

Young people often think things like that. They haven't yet come to realize that all that culture is is just the ways people live their lives, work, entertain themselves. It's all that stuff that is completely mundane to them. Usually after they travel some and see a few neat thing and notice that the locals are totally nonplussed about it as it is just what they do that they will start to make the connection. For better or for worse,the US has a massive cultural impact even on nations that are not at all like us or we just don't get along with. Hollywood is a huge cultural exporter, probably the largest single cultural exporter their is. As other places adsorb bits of American culture, we absorb their culture in foods , their entertainment etc. You may even find yourself taking a bit of pride then in a foreign land and you find people ethusiastic about some aspect of your culture. I recall being in Malaysia many years ago and finding to my surprise that a American program had an almost cult like following. Then I found out that it was the Jerry Springier show and my enthusiasm was well curbed. Culture, she's a double edged sword to be sure.

If you live in rural America a pickup or similar truck is going to be the most practical option. Whether it's for hauling things or dealing with weather patterns it's ideal. Hell, I live in a densely populated area in South Florida and I'd still prefer a truck because of the flooding alone.

Pickups are popular for a number of reasons. They carry things more easily. They are larger and built with heavier construction so they are safer in a collision. You can also mount a brush guard that helps mitigate collisions with animals. You can mount a winch to pull people or yourself out of a ditch/snowbank. You can pull heavier loads like campers/boats/trailers. They have the option to have 4 wheel drive on command so they are better in bad weather. (most people get this option) For snow states they are higher off the ground so you can use them when a car would be stuck. They have a higher resale value due to their. Even with poor gas mileage their abilities outweigh their downsides.

Hi Kabir, great review as always. Yes, there is a professional rodeo circuit in the US. For the longest time the National Finals Rodeo was held in Vegas in December. There were competitions in all the areas, bronco riding, wrangling, bull riding etc. Also, thank you for pointing out that the US is full of culture along with the lady in the video. Our culture might be more varied than Europe as we have groups from all over the world. The rodeos are Texas and Mexico in nature, then there are Shakespearean festivals across the country. Music from around the globe, then of course there is our shared culture, sports, history, and we just had the 4th of July. America is a very diverse country and our culture could be stated as being the world's culture.

I married into a farm family. Growing up, my wife watched bull riding with her family (her father, a beef farmer, always cheered for the bull). When I met my then-future in laws, my FIL tried to talk me into steer wrestling (I’m 6’3” andat the time was around 280 lbs: 1.9 m and 127 kg). I don’t know if he was trying to get me killed or not. 3:37 currently, gas where I am is about $3.15 per gallon, which works out to about £0.65 per liter based on current exchange rates. 4:29 being a larger person, I’m more comfortable in a pickup or SUV. I also tend to do most of the maintenance, landscaping, etc around my house and often need to haul stuff and having the truck makes it easier. I also have a couple of trailers I often need to tow and the more powerful engines (higher torque specifically) makes that easier. 9:51 some people have strange definitions of culture. At my first job out of college, I was working in HartfordCT. One of my fellow new hires was from Southern California and during a meeting with our second level manager to see how we were settling in, she was complaining about the “lack of culture”. Given that we were half way between New York and Boston, I don’t know what she was looking for that she couldn’t find. Everywhere I’ve ever gone, I’ve found culture, even if it’s odd (maybe especially) it’s interesting. 14:51 those bulls probably weigh a little less than a ton (say 700kg). I saw at least one that was pretty small, but those can be very scary because they’re quick and agile. 16:26 thank God for those rodeo clowns who keep the animals from hurting the riders, especially in this sort of situation.

Having a pick up, at least one in the family, helps you out in all those situations where you need either the muscle of a truck, or the bed for moving stuff. We usually go into the mountains each year to cut our own Christmas tree, and having a pickup that you can just toss the tree into the back bed is pure heaven on earth! We tried one year to take our car up there and it was murder trying to tie the tree on top and then get into the car....add to that the fact we did not have 4 wheel drive and we quickly slid backwards down the hill back to the bottom of the meadow. Thankfully no one was behind us or we would have crashed. They really are a blessing for moving big loads from the stores to home, or moving from one home to another! As a 2 car family we have always had a sedan as one of our vehicles and the other one was some kind of truck/SUV or Jeep for the heavy jobs.

I also think that people who say that the U.S. has no culture is because it doesn't feel like a united sense of culture. Each region, each state is unique and brings something special to the table. There may be some commonalities, but the culture is as varied as our multitude of states and nationalities that exist within its borders.

A little history… old west use to not have fences, so a lot of these tasks came from those eras… men on horses had to catch the calves to brand them or else they could easily get mixed up with others… they had to learn to sort them also, because when two heards got too close they would mingle, tying the calves feet was for branding… team roping, one catches the hind legs, the others catches the horns or neck, although neck was less preferred because it could damage your animal, and your animals survival and health was the top priority, as it was and still is your living… tough times kept alive… it’s a jolly good time…

Back in the 1990s, I met a woman who worked for the British Embassy in DC & she said part of her job was “cultural liaison”. She was responsible for giving the orientation to young Brits working for the embassy who were coming to the US for the first time. She had to explain to them that despite having a common language & a shared history, they were entering into a different culture & she said they would often have culture shock which wound up being a struggle between what they learned in the media & what they expected & reality Re: bronco bucking. Yes, that is a professional sport. A lot of them wind up with arthritis of the spine if they do it for too long When I was in college I had a Native American friend whose father worked the rodeo circuit before he got married & settled down.

My family has been involved with rodeo since before i was born. I come from generations of horse and cattle ranchers in Utah. We no longer ranch, but my father still rodeos, he is 81 years old. Rodeo is a professional sport. Its called the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) 🤠 Most cowboys and cowgirls are amateur status, and that is primarily what the rodeo uou watched was. They were mostly local ranchers and farmers, or horse people living in that area. There may have been a few pros competing. The trick riding is not an event in all rodeos. The roping events that you saw are calf roping(off the horse tied the hoofs), and team roping. My father was a calf roper until he got to old to get off that fast and flank a calf. The calves they used were small, they are usually bigger. Now my dad team ropes. He is the header, they catch the head and turn the steer(castrated bull) so that the heeler can catch the two hind hoofs. The reason for these events is traditional ranching skills used for branding or treating sick animals. There are three events that have no real use they are just showing off; barrel racing, steer wrestling, and bull riding. Google these events. In the Western states we use pickup trucks for a lot of reasons. Most are practical. It isnt just to look cool or because we like big vehicles. Most of us have smaller vehicles too that we use for running around town. Gas is too expensive to drive a pickup all the time if its not necessary.

I can totally see how you would have so many questions if you didnt know anything about the rodeo atmosphere but I think its awesome that she went and asked the questions and was very invested. Everyone I know in the rodeo world would love to teach more people about them and the culture around them. You have seen 2 perspectives now. The last video where the 2 guys went was at Houston which is one of the largest and most prestigious professional rodeos in the United States. What she went to was a much smaller scale and much more local feel. Both are great and give not only your professionals but your locals chances at competing. But that is a huge reason that the other video had so much more going on. Its a much much larger rodeo. I am also glad she picked up on the relationship the competitors have with their horses and animals. There is so much respect in the bond you make with these animals that unfortunately sometimes gets overlooked. If you are ever in central California let me know. I would be happy to take you to one!

I went to my first and only rodeo when I was an (photo/graphic art) intern summer of 1990 for the Dallas Times Herald (DTH, a well loved newspaper, closed down after 118 years in 1991.) It was an African American rodeo and I was invited by a DTH photo journalist (my colleague/teacher)who thought I would enjoy. It was fascinating! The food stalls was more Southern/African American then in this video: fried chicken, collard greens, mac n cheese, cheese burgers, BBQ ribs, etc. Both children and adults were in the show and there was some competition but mostly entertainment, with loads of rodeo clowns running and jumping into barrels. It was very organized event and I got to meet a few of the older cowboy veterans. They were full of historical stories about rodeos and the Black cowboy experience in America. I hadn't thought about it until I saw your video...very nice memories!

I’ve lived around horses my whole life, and after moving around the country I can tell you almost every single rural town or county has a rodeo at least once a year, most schedule theirs around the other local ones so cowboys and cowgirls can go to several because they charge entry fees Our family has a truck to take horses from place to place as well as fake chores like picking up gravel, bringing firewood, taking lawnmower to repair shop, pulling out stumps. Many other families like the cargo space or take it off-road One thing I’ve seen at a few rodeos is a kids event where every kid in audience goes to one end of the arena, their parents took one of the kids shoes and threw it out on the other side and the kids have to race to get their shoes, always fun

All of the events of the rodeo, except for bull-riding, are skills that are, or were, used in ranch life. Most of the events are things we still do on the ranch. Calf roping - The calf is roped and thrown to the ground and his legs are tied. This was done to work with the calf, possibly brand it or tag it. We still do something similar to this but much less labor intensive. A calf is caught by its hind legs, brought out of the pen where two people hold onto it and it receives vaccinations, is branded, and castrated if necessary. But if you only have one or two people doing this job, then tying the calf would be helpful. Bronc riding - both saddle and bareback were skills needed when training horses to use on the ranch. Most horse people use methods now that tame the horse and you hopefully don't have the bucking session, but be prepared.....lol Timed events are: Steer wrestling - Was done to catch an older animal in order to brand, etc. You won't likely find people still using this method, but back in the day when ranches were much more spread out and there were maybe only a couple of guys working the cows, it was more common. Goat tying - an event for women, similar to calf roping, where they are timed in their speed to throw the goat and tie it. Team roping - someone ropes the head (the header) of the animal and their partner (the heeler) ropes their back legs, they then cause the animal to lay down. We use this a lot, still. In the timed event once horses are facing each other the clock is stopped. Only catching one heel of the steer is a 5 second penalty. Breakaway roping: Another timed event where you rope the steer and stop your horse as quickly as possible, when pulled taught, the roped breaks away and the clock stops. Barrel Racing: A sport that allows you to show your horses ability to corner and it's speed. Both requirements necessary in working with cows.

Most Americans are proud of the phrase "A melting pot" to describe the US. There are so many different cultures that continue to add to the flavor and diversity of the US in every area of this vast country.
@hectorsmommy1717
@hectorsmommy1717 Жыл бұрын
We should stop complaining that food or other things that come over from another country are "different". Things change because the immigrants got introduced to other cultures and adapted. For food especially, the immigrants didn't necessarily have access to the same ingredients as they did back home. Tex-Mex food is not, nor should it be, the same as Mexican food. Italian food in the New World is not the same as it is in Italy, and that is OK. I like to describe the "melting pot" as more of a stew. Instead of everything melting together, the ingredients take on some of the flavors of the others, while still maintaining their own identity. If we melt everything together, we lose character.

@@hectorsmommy1717 Seems to me things don't have to retain their original character to be different from each other, whether it's food, music or other forms of culture. For all the mutual influences, fusion etc., when I go to my friends of Italian, Japanese, African American, Korean, Jewish, Indian, Russian and other heritages, their food, music, and often even the art on the wall has retained a lot of their heritage's aspects, and is "different" from what I grew up with, and different from each other. So although Italian food in the U.S. is not the same as it is in Italy, the roots are the same and they maintain a significant commonality, and are both easily distinguishable from, say, Indian and Russian food.

The bed can carry at least 1500 lbs , and is typically 5-6 feet long. It can be used for recreation such as camping or bringing motorcycle dirt bike, boats along for fun. Pickups, and larger cars are more common in the US for several reasons. One is that Most American cities were not built around winding horse paths but are instead build for cars with much wider streets than is common in Europe. Gas is much cheaper here as well which is good because we put on a lot more distance and much harder distance than in Europe this leads to bigger cars in general. Another one is have taxes are levied. Their is a higher rate on passenger carrying vehicles (cars) than on freight vehicles (trucks) so the truck is not that much more expensive than a car. Of course the single biggest reasons you will see a lot of pickup in this video it that this is Montana we are talking about. Most of those guys are farmers or ranchers or in some business that tends to the needs of farms and ranches. These are people that have frequent need of a pickup truck. This is also why you will not see many trucks in showroom quality look here either, these are working trucks which means they are going to get dirty, dusty, and scraped up.

I’ve always had a pickup because it serves more purposes than having a car for me. If you have to move something large you can do it yourself rather than paying a delivery service. Look up last years NFR in Las Vegas it’s the best of the best in all events competing for “world” titles.

A pickup truck has the utility element. They are also usually built to be more resillient than passenger cars. Psychologically, they say that the owner can and may do more than just commute to the next town for a restaurant they've wanted to try. Pickup owners often do help a friend, family member, or just a neighbor, move a heavy couch the elderly person bought on Facebook Marketplace. Anyone can use their car to go anywhere on a whim, but the pickup makes the owners feel like they might also do some good with the machine. Pickups seem to dominate in certain rura, rustic states and areas, but those are also areas that are likely to have bad driving conditions such as mud, snow, dirt roads, etc. I'm from (and in) Texas though I have lived in four other states, and have driven professionally in all but 3 of the contiguous states ... excluding Hawaii and Alaska) and I have a relative who insists they not only need a pickup, but they need four-wheel drive. (They are notorious for helping others get their vehicles out of mud or snow, usually strangers.) Pickup trucks, especially the expensive ones, are also status symbols in states where they may be legitimately needed at times, but as such they are often owned by people who absoutely do not use them for anything other than driving to the next town to try a restaurant they have heard good things about. As with anything, there are those who merely pose. I enjoy your channel a lot! Thanks for your hard work. If you ever get to Texas, say Howdy! :)

A rodeo (row-DE-o) is Spanish and loosely means to surround or “round up”. The USA proudly boasts that it’s “mother country” is England but much of it has the mother country of Mexico. Many correctly say Spain is because the Spanish crown set out to colonize it but the reality was that most of the people, customs SUPPLIES and so forth actually came from Mexico or “Nueva España” as it was called then. These “mestizos” and others were people who few had ever seen Spain. They introduced the vaquero or cowboy way of life to the Americans of European descent. My father was a vaquero who worked ranches. Many of these smaller rodeos have local cowboys/cowgirls compete as well. I like the locals better and especially little ones. My father competed at rodeos in team roping and calf roping. Cowboying (competing) can be done but most actually work on ranches AND compete. Those clowns out there actually SAVE the rider and are truly putting their lives on the line to do it The two cowboys riding along the bucking horse after the rider is off are there to remove the “tickle strap” that makes the horse buck Originally to tie the calf up on a ranch was to get it ready to brand

That being said I would say most homes only have 1 pickup truck with their other car being more of a small SUV or Sedan to balance out :)

Kabir you're absolutely right, you would love it! The excitement, the food, the people, the activities, it's a blast. I live in the south and have worked behind the scenes at rodeos assisting in moving cattle and horses where they need to be, helping out the riders as they get ready, whatever wherever I was needed. No need to feel apprehensive just act like you belong. Be a decent person and don't stand out as a fool and you're welcome just about anywhere. People are friendly as heck and will answer your every question...ESPECIALLY with a British accent. Americans love the accent, use it to your advantage. Some people are against rodeos claiming animal cruelty but I dunno. Those animals are genetically equipped to live in the wild, outdoors. They are tough and if anything they're a bit annoyed at all this aggravation. But harming them? I don't go that far. Except for this little excursion they are generally treated quite well. These animals cost a lot of money so of course they will be. Cowboys are not at all like the people who collect animals, put them in cages and seldom feed or care for them. Country folk treat their animals as good as if not better than their own kids. The cost of replacing one of those grown horses or bulls is kinda up there dollar-wise. Most farm people have at least two or more kids...there's a reason for that. Pssst! (Spares.)

I have my truck because I need it. It is used to haul horse feed up to 600 pounds at a time, haul hay, fencing material, farm supplies, and pulls the horse trailer. Because I can only afford 1 vehicle & don't want to pay insurance on 2 vehicles, I have my truck. In my case, it is a must-have. But I also think a lot of people have them because they are safer, especially if you are driving open roads for long distances and Texas has a lot of driving to get around.

I grew up in a rodeo town, and for the few days the town was alive with rodeo. It is amazing how similar the rodeos in Montana and Texas are. My dad was the town doctor so he wouldn't let us ride any dangerous events. It started with the rodeo parade down main street. Anybody with a horse could be in it. I rode in several. Then anyone that would be riding in the Grand Entry or participating in event would Ride out the the rodeo grounds. After all the events of the rodeo, there would be a dance with a live band. There the rodeo queen would be announced and crowned. One year in the 1960s my sister was rodeo queen. She also rode in the Barrel race in the rodeo. If you have questions about the rodeo contact me, I will likely know the answer. By the way, I am 70 yrs old now.

Both the regular and diesel are pretty expensive compared to most of the country. We are paying $3.75 a gallon for diesel in the mid-Atlantic. Plus I have yet to see a UHaul rental vehicle that will tow a 26k lb trailer.

Cattle wrangling is the sport you asked about in the beginning of the video. Its how the cowboys caught the new calves to brand them with the ranch brand. A branding tool is a metal design of the owners initials or a design specific to the ranchs name that is heated red hot and used on the hind quarters of the cattle. If a ranch had hundreds of heads of cattle and didn't keep them separated from the bulls, there would be numerous calves to catch at one time. The faster you were the faster you got paid and it wouldn't take you weeks to do it.

I'm in St. Louis now. But 45 yrs ago, my hubby n I lived in Idaho. There was a big rodeo set right next to I-80. We were driving about a mile away. We then saw a huge Texas long horn break threw the fence of the rideo. He had an 8ft horn span and was galloping full run towards. We slowed down in case we needed to drive crazy. Then following Right behind the GIGANTIC BULL, threw the broken fence, jumping the fence were full decked out cowboys, and Indians.The Indian was in full chieftain regalia white leathers sparkled up, including the headress that was as long as he was tall, full of feathers and sparkle All were galloping towards us with Lasso's. Literally looked like we were watching a movie. It took all cowboys and Indians to lasso the steer down and contain it. Just as we drove past in a "WHAT IN THE WORLD DID WE JUST WATCH?" Slow motion mouth gapping state. It is truly unforgettable. Thought it fit here

Replying to the question about trucks: We live in the country so we use trucks to haul things in. Even when we just clear the land, you can put leaves, branches, etc. in the back of the truck so you can haul everything to the burn pile. Also, four wheel drive trucks are essential here because if we have bad weather in the winter we need a four wheel drive to get over the mountain. The roads aren't maintained in the winter this far out in the country. If you try to get out on the back roads, which are red clay and are slicker than snot in bad weather, you need a four wheel drive truck to get out that way as well.

In the United States roping calves and cows is a skill used daily on farms and ranches. The ranch cattle are usually left alone on huge tracks of land to roam and graze. And don't get handled much. So when they need to be checked health and calves ear tagged and health checks, the rancher will separate out the calf while on horseback. Rope the calf and tie it by the feet so it can be handled. Rodeo is a way for these ranchers to come show off the skills they use daily working on their ranches. It's a way to get together and have fun and win a little prize money. Pro bull riding brings people from all over the world to compete. Yes. It's mostly Americans. But more and more nowadays you're going to see European's compete. It comes from the Spanish and Mexican cattle ranchers from way back. Vaquero's is what they call themselves. So that's basically a simplified explanation of the rodeo and why we do it. Blessings to y'all from the Great State of Texas 🤠🇺🇸

I don't know if the price is the same across Montana, but diesel in Maryland is about $3.75. There are 3.785 L per US gallon. Pickups are useful for so much. You can tow a trailer (fifth wheel/gooseneck) larger than anything that Europeans would even consider possible with a private vehicle. When not towing you can carry sheet stock (4x8 sheets), lumber, stone, mulch, topsoil, a snowmobile/ATV, a pallet of whatever (two in larger trucks - payloads on HD trucks is usually 3,000 to 7,500 lbs), canoes, kayaks, skis/snowboards and so much more. A lot of people run removeable tonneau covers that keep the weather out and thieves away when you don't need the bed for hauling or towing. Edit: I forgot one of the best things about pickups. You can put the hog/deer/moose etc that you just shot in the bed of the truck and hose out the blood when you get home.
