Also, trade with the British was a big deal, as he was desperately trying to build up the island nation's economy. In order to do that, he established some policies (related to foreign investment, land ownership, and representation in government) that ended up resulting in Hawaii being pretty much completely taken over by rich foreigners and eventually joining the United States. People tend to assume that America colonized the nation against the will of the locals, but it was kind of the local king's *idea* in the first place, though it's not clear whether he fully understood the implications of what he was doing. Then again, his policies *did* also accomplish his economic goals.

As someone who lives in Alaska, I will say that Alaska is beautiful to live in and because we are so isolated, we still do have a lot of picturesque places. What is not usually shown most of the time is what our towns and cities look like, and what living in Alaska is really like. Most of the beautiful pictures/videos taken of Alaska by visitors/tourists are taken in the federal land, which is roughly 60% of Alaska. All of the national parks, like the Tongass rainforest and glaciers, are included in the 60% and are where most of the tourists see when the visit. The other 40% is mostly made up of towns, cities, and villages. The thing about being paid to live in Alaska has to do with the Federal land that houses the oil reserves. Any Alaskan citizen who has lived in Alaska for at least a year at any age can apply for the Permanent Fund Dividend or PFD. The money comes from the cost of selling the oil from the reserve, and a portion is given back to citizens while the rest goes to the government. The amount is received annually around the beginning of October and fluctuates depending on oil sales/prices. The lowest I’ve seen has been $900 and the most has been $2,100. For children under 18 a portion of the PFD is put into the Alaska College Fund that they can access once they turn 18 to help pay for higher education. There is also no state sales tax in Alaska, but there is local sales tax that depends on the location.

Ohio, “The Mother of Presidents”, has sired 7 Presidents, 26 astronauts (incl. Neil Armstrong, who was 1st to walk on the moon), the Wright brothers (1st aviators ever), Thomas Edison (invented the lightbulb), famous filmmaker Steven Spielberg, and many others. We're highly rated for education and medical care, and thanks to the "millionaire's tax" that was recently instituted, community college will be free for first time college attendees. Plus, legal weed (which also benefits towns that have dispensaries). That being said, we also have one of the highest costs of living, especially when it comes to housing. Plus, our weather isn't scary but it is insane - can go from below freezing one day to 80°F (26.7°C) the next. Our drivers are nicknamed "Mass holes" and Boston traffic sucks. Pennsylvanian here and this state has a lot of big and world changing history that was missed. This state was essentially a big part in leading the world to where it is now. The declaration of independence and US constitution were both written, signed, and ratified in Philadelphia which officially formed the country in the eyes of the world. Oil was also discovered here, the largest of the time which lead to the oil boom at Drakes well. Oil together with Pittsburgh steel around the same time it greatly impacted the industrial revolution and fueled the industrial boom. We have a LOT of coal here too which traveled all over the continent with Pennsylvania's other important feature of the time, Lake Erie, the most important port of early America which was also the start of the naval victories against the British at the battle of Lake Erie. The Erie canal and the Allegheny River with its tributaries led to every corner of the civilized country at the time. But back to the revolution Pennsylvania is also home to Valley Forge where George Washington started turning the war around for the colonies. Side note, Philadelphia was the nations capital until the British seiged it and burnt it down, later it was established across the bay in what is now Washington DC. Off the top of my head there's so much more history here but those were the some of the most profound events that have happened here

We are known for Tex-Mex, BBQ, Dr. Pepper, Taco Bueno, Whataburger, SXSW Music Festival, cowboys, longhorn cattle, rodeos and so much more. Texas has the 2nd biggest economy in the US after California and the 8th largest in the world (yes, measured against countries). Worth area and more. Texas and Oklahoma have a college football rivalry, but outside that, we are tight and have each others' backs, esp. when hurricanes yet. Olympic National Park in Washington is best visited mid July to first part of October. There is a rain forest there in this park. You can go over the Cascade Mountains and be in Iowa. The west side gets lots of rain, the central and east side are great farming and dry weather. Some snow on the west side and lots of snow on the east side. Washington is really two states in one.

I know you couldn't believe the price tag on an item isn't the actual price because of the state tax but here in NH, you will find that IS the price....unless it's prepared food, like at a restaurant, where you need to add 8.5% more. I grew up in Connecticut. Here's some facts for you! It's an original 13 colony. Home to Yale university. Mystic seaport which houses century old ships. Famous Peabody museum. Absolutely beautiful in the fall. I adore the town I had the privilege of growing up in, small and homey feel. Close to the bustle of NY, but a short skip over Mass to Vermont or New Hampshire to slow down. Many wonderful things there like colonial architecture my father grew up in a home built prior to the American Civil war. Some homes still around from the revolutionary war period.

Missouri - my home state, grew up in Independence, (home of Pres. Truman), which is now a suburb of Kansas City, MO. There is a small KC on the Kansas side of the river but it is mostly warehouses. The MO side of the river grew into the larger city due to railroads and the stockyards. When the railroads were being built, there was a wharf on the MO side of the Missouri River that the owner heavily lobbied to become the needed crossing point - this is the same area where paddle boats would stop to do business. The city just naturally continued to grow on the Missouri side of the river banks. This also made sense as Independence was on the Missouri side and was the last major "civilized" city for supplies for those heading West via the Santa Fe, California or Oregon Trails. (SantaCaliGon Days Festival is still celebrated every year in Independence.) And yes, it is the homes of the Chiefs and Royals!

I did an Alaskan cruise back in 2010. We did several excursions off the boat for hikes and boat rides. It is hands down the most beautiful place I've ever seen. I really hope to go back there one day. I was born and grew up in Connecticut. He's not wrong though, it is kind of a place you drive through to get to somewhere else. It's beautiful there, but a lot of the state is very poor. I lived in north east CT, but I loved how easily I could go to boston or NYC, I could drive down to the coast, visit the aquarium. Mark Twain has a beautiful pink house there you can go and visit. We went to Sturbridge Village every year on school field trips, and up to Riverside, before it turned into Six Flags. I have family all over New England, so I spent summers in Maine and Vermont and New Hampshire, hiking to see the Old Man of the Mountain and going to 4-H fairs to see the animals. It is a very expensive place to live, too. It's not hard to spell, though. Connect I Cut. I now live in Kentucky. How did he not even mention horses? The Kentucky Derby? The horse country out in Lexington? Also - we have a castle! I love it here, it's beautiful, the weather is better than Connecticut, the cost of living is better, but the people....are pretty terrible. For one the difference in education level is just staggering. The racism and hate is off the charts. If you can find somewhere to settle down where you don't have to interact with the locals, it's very nice here.

When he asked "who's from WY?" I thought of Liz Cheney. I made a pilgrimage to Wyoming in 2022. In 1869, Wyoming became the first state or territory in the nation to give women the right to vote, as well as the rights to hold public office, own and inherit property, and the guardianship of minor children. I didn't know that until I arrived in Laramie and saw Louisa Swain's statue. I did some research that night. Then there's the statue of a woman on a horse breaking through a wall, symbolizing the barriers women overcome. Wyoming had more statues of horses than any place I've ever seen! ha Wyoming is also home to the first JCPenney's store. My mom worked as a window dresser at our hometown Penney's in the 1940s, so I made a detour to Kammerer to buy a few things there in her honor. 🥰 Wyoming was a delightful surprise!

It comes from the French word Fat Tuesday, (it was a French Holiday) and is the day right before the start of Lent, a Catholic liturgical period of time when Catholics fast. So the day before was dedicated a party where everyone had a feast and dressed up, (the reason for the masks) However, many non-Catholics celebrate it nowadays and have changed it greatly. I'm from Georgia and I LOOOOOOVE driving in Atlanta but only because I know where to avoid. Basically, Atlanta traffic has two forms: parking lot, which isn't fun and I always know to avoid that, and Need For Speed, which is where the posted speed limit says 70mph, but traffic is cruising around 87-90mph and then the fast lanes are saved for those who can afford to avoid jail (celebrities and super-rich people) and are going like 120mph in their $150K+ luxury vehicles. I LOOOOOVE driving fast so I always have fun. That said, the cost of parking a car in Atlanta cancels out the fun. Parking in Atlanta is ridiculous. I learned it's cheaper to find a long-term cheap parking lot and use Lyft or Uber to get around. There's a $10 for 12 hour parking lot I know about, so as soon as I go to Atlanta for the day, I go there and leave my car.
