There has never been enough water in the S.W. U.S. There are constant fights between S.W. Utah, Las Vegas, and South Cali about who gets what and the Colorado river doesn't reach the ocean anymore because of how much is taken. There is no way to pump water into the middle of Nevada.

7:00 Just a quick note here. This may be completely unrelated, but I thought to add it just to clear up any questions about the term "Jurisdiction". Jurisdiction is used to denote the powers or laws that govern a region. Generally, cities fall under the jurisdiction of counties, counties fall under the jurisdiction of the state, and states fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Governments. A quick example is that cities are free to enact their own laws as long as they don't conflict with county law and counties pass laws that don't conflict with state law. As far as states are concerned, any laws that are passed which (may) conflict with Federal Law have to be ironed out in the Federal Court systems because the the U.S. Constitution recognizes the right of states to govern themselves (as individual sovereignties) as long as it doesn't conflict with approved federal laws. Hope that doesn't sound too complicated.😉

Mt. McKinley or Denali in Alaska is indeed the highest point in the US, but he specified “in the contiguous United States” - thus Mt. Whitney in California. If you want to get weirder, Denali/McKinley is the fourth “tallest” mountain on Earth but only the 3rd tallest in the US. “Tallest” being measured as from base to tip- 2 mountains in Hawaiʻi are “taller” as their base’s are all the way down on the deep sea floor. Everest is only the fifth “tallest” on earth, but because it’s base is up on the high altitude Tibetan plateau it ends up being the “highest”.
@RogCBrand
@RogCBrand Жыл бұрын
I notice some people can't quite comprehend Mauna Kea is actually taller than Everest. But it's like a 5 feet tall person standing on a 2 foot tall step stool. That doesn't make them taller than a 6 foot person. On the stool, their head is a foot higher, but they are still only 5 feet tall.

@2.11 Colorado and Wyoming are near perfect rectangles. @2.22 My favorite oddity here is that Windsor Ontario Canada is further south than Bilbao Spain @2.40 He said "contiguous US". That's the 48 connected states, not including Alaska or Hawaii. @4.30 Kabir "surely it should be up here, if it's West St Paul". (moves mouse around north of St Paul) LOL @5.30 Yes, you have to have papers to drive from Point Roberts to Washington State. I'm not sure if there's some special setup for residents just going into Canada. The Northwest Angle is far more rural. There are border checkpoints, but most of the time it's not manned and you have to check in by a videophone at the border. During the winter there's an ice road across The Lake Of The Woods, that lets you drive to the Northwest Angle without crossing Canada. Of course there's a third point in the US that you have to cross Canada to reach by car, Alaska. @9.00 Rhode Island is the smallest state for land area. Wyoming is the smallest for population. @9.30 I'm surprised Kabir didn't know New York is the biggest US city by far. Almost as big as #2 LA and #3 Chicago combined. Most of Nevada is federally owned land, with many military sites including the Nevada Test Site with Area 51, and the Nellis Air Force Range. Nellis by itself is over 4,500 square miles. No, you can't just move there. Even if you could, I always find it amusing when Kabir speculates about how someone could move to some incredibly remote place, and just "live off the land". This would be practically impossible. Most of it is an arid desert with absolutely no infrastructure, services, or access to water whatsoever. Having said that, there are a number of very small communities throughout central Nevada where you could buy property, mostly along Highway 50, and Interstate 80, but why one earth would you want to live there? 90% of Nevada's 3.1 million people live in the Las Vegas and Reno areas, with the remaining 350,000 people spread out over a barren desert that's larger than the entire UK.

2:42 - he's talking about the contiguous US (which is the 48 states other than Alaska and Hawaii). The US's highest elevation is indeed in Alaska (Denali is over 20,000 feet). A few individual states have similar quirks: Minnesota's high point is Eagle Mountain in the Arrowhead region, just 12 miles from the shore of Lake Superior, which is the state's lowest point. However, the elevation difference is nowhere near what it is in California - Eagle Mountain is a mere 2300 feet and Lake Superior is at 600 feet above sea level. 4:53 - there is a South St. Paul as well, which is southeast of West St. Paul (as you'd expect). There's also a North St. Paul, which is north of St. Paul but even further east. If you moved downtown St. Paul about four miles east, all of the names would make sense. (As it turns out, West St. Paul is named for being on the West Bank of the Mississippi River; however, the river runs mostly east-west through St. Paul, rather than north-south as it does almost everywhere else, so the West Bank is the south side.) 5:45 - before 9/11, the US-Canada border was pretty open; you didn't need a passport at all if you were a citizen of the other country. That's no longer the case. There are some other weird places along the border, mostly (like those two) due to treaties defining the border before it was properly surveyed. Akwesasne, Quebec is the reverse version of it - only accessible by road from New York, right where the border transitions from the 45th parallel to the St. Lawrence River. There's also a Canadian island (Campobello Island) whose only bridge connects to Lubec, Maine (though it has ferry service from the Canadian mainland via Deer Island); and a short stretch of Quebec Highway 247 runs directly along the border, with signs posted that Border Services *will* chew you out for visiting your across-the-street neighbor without checking in. 12:00 - the reasoning here is that each highway is consistently signed with a single direction (primarily north-south highways are always signed north-south even if they turn to temporarily run east-west; if you're going north on I-81 and get off briefly, you don't want to have to figure out whether to get back on going east or west, you want to just get back on going north), and these two happen to temporarily merge while turning. There are even funnier ones signed with three or more highways running three directions at once (I don't believe there are any with all four).

the borders lines have tons of funny stuff even concerning state lines. I live on a lake on the North Carolina/Virginia border and because of the way the state line runs through the top half of the Lake, our mail carrier has to cross over into Virginia and drive a 30 minute round trip to deliver mail to a couple dozen houses that are on a peninsula of NC land that juts out into the north side of the lake. It looks like it is even worse for the VA carriers that have to cover the small bits of VA land that are on the south shore of the lake and jut out north over the line from the south shore.

Out west the defining factor for most is the serious lack of water. If you've ever been anywhere in the south in August you know the heat is tolerated, in fact I prefer the heat out west better because the humidity is very low and with a breeze you can stay cooler, in the south you can sweat buckets and not cool down because your sweat doesn't evaporate.

Contiguous means the 48 states that touch, which means everywhere except Alaska and Hawaii, where Mt. Whitney is in Cali. However the tallest mountain in the US is Denali in Alaska, but when you say the contiguous or the lower 48 states that means you are not counting Alaska and Hawaii. One thing Alaska and Hawaii are left out of often for them being so much farther away is good deals online. Many shippers don't want to ship to them since it costs so much more. The other day I bought some video games that were like half off from a new Amazon subsidiary called Woot! and they said in a disclaimer that it didn't include residents of Hawaii and Alaska, and even Puerto Rico is much closer and isn't part of these shipping exemptions normally.

I agree Kabir, you don't need to make use of every single part of the world. Some parts are untouched by people and it's fine to leave it at that. It would be a useless endeavor anyways. Not only would it destroy the natural habitat that has evolved to live in desert climates, but the water sent there would just evaporate away. It's the water table that really needs the work. The USA has a habit of draining water tables, it's apparently an issue happening in the great plains area. Plus the sandy soil wouldn't be great for growing very much.

Houston, Texas is the 4th largest city in the US, yet the 2nd most populated. San Antonio is the 7th. Dallas is the 9th, and Austin is the 10th.

No, Central Nevada is actually fairly elevated, so it's really not all that hot.

Kabir, I've watched this video so many times, and this is the first time I've noticed that the meter count is wrong; it should read 85.5, but even that's wrong, since the correct count is closer to 86.0. A 3rd. place that should be with the NW Angle and Pt. Roberts is Hyder, AK, in that if a resident wants to get to the rest of AK, they have to either take a flight over the Coast Mtns. to get to Ketchikan, in the Panhandle, or drive 441mi./710km. through Canada on the Cassiar, Alaska and Klondike Hwys. to get to Skagway--the nearest other town in AK by road. Another point about counties--there are 2 states that give them a different name--Parish in LA, and Borough in AK, and if Puerto Rico ever becomes a state, its term will be município (municipality in English). Just for fun, have you ever heard San Diego jokingly called Sandy Eggo?😀 Rhode Island is the smallest state at 1/94th that of WY, but the smallest population honor goes to WY, with less than half that of RI. The 3 biggest metro areas are NYC, LA and Chicago, with Houston being #4, and it's predicted that eventually San Antonio will be #5. True--NV's heat is a problem, but the lack of jobs is also a significant factor. One that wasn't included, since it's not a quirk, but is worth mentioning is that everyone knows we have shores on the Atlantic and Pacific, plus the significant shoreline of the Great Lakes, but many don't realize we also have shoreline on the Arctic Ocean via northern AK.

Mt. Whitney is the highest point in the contiguous U.S. The highest point in the entire U.S. is Denali (AKA Mt. McKinley) in Alaska. It's not in the contiguous U.S. because Alaska isn't physically connected to the lower 48 states. Rhode Island is the smallest state in terms of area, at only 1,545 square miles. The state with the smallest population is Wyoming, with only about 578,800 people. The business where you go north on Interstate 77 while going south on Interstate 81 also happens with Interstates 80 and 580 in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's just not practical to build cities where there's no water for miles around. Phoenix is in the middle of a desert, but it's right next to the Gila River. Las Vegas is near the Colorado River and Lake Mead (created by Hoover Dam). There are no rivers of lakes in that big, sparsely population section of Nevada.

Kyle said “Contiguous states” which means the lower 48. That does not include Alaska or Hawaii. So Mount Whitney is the highest Point in the lower 48 while death Valley is the lowest point in the lower 48 and they’re both in California.

Some cities and counties in Virginia cooperate with each other but some really don't. It is very strange how things operate here. Annexation is not a fun process. It can get quite bitter.

There are farms in Nevada. But it has hurt the environment by taking water from places like walker river which has turned walker lake, a salt lake, even saltier. Which is hurting endemic fish in the lake. There are not many places for Nevada to take the water from except the Colorado River. And L.A won't let that happen.

I live in Texarkana, Texas (pronounced TEX-er-kana) and the gentleman in the video is wrong about Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas being one city. We are twin cities. Yes, we have a federal post office/courthouse downtown that sits on the state line. But we are in different counties (Bowie and Miller),have different mayors, city councils, area codes, zip codes, police departments, fire departments, school districts, sales taxes, and even local laws. I work on State Line Avenue, and yes, it's called that because the state line runs right in the middle of the turning lane so if you're in said turning lane, you are in both states at the same time. Until recently, you could purchase alcohol on the Arkansas side, but not on the Texas side, because it was legal in Miller County, but not in Bowie County. So driving down State Line Ave. all the liquor stores were on one side of the street but not the other. Our law enforcement and fire departments do work in cooperation with each other, but are separate entities. It is uncommon, but not unique. Other twin cities tend to be divided by something substantial like a river, while we are separated by a line down the middle of a 5 lane road. If you ever come to the U.S. come see us!

Great reax. The best YT video on US geography is “How Geography Made the US Ricldiculoisly OP,” by RealLifeLore. Describes how US geography- especially its river system and deep water natural harbors set the country up to be a superpower. Along with geological advantages re: fossil fuels. Worth checking out and reacting to.
