I went to school in Maryland and Len Bias played basketball for the University of Maryland. I remember it like yesterday. Len died from a heart attack brought about by cocaine. His mother at that time in 1986 made the rounds speaking out against drugs and squandered talent at many high schools, mine included, and colleges. Terribly sad time.

A LARGE part of the reason that Larry's trash talk was so good is that he would back it up, EVERY time. He called his shots often, he would tell the opposing players, even the opposing coach, what he was going to do, daring them to stop him, and they couldn't. One game he was being guarded by Dennis Rodman, who was known as one of the best defenders in the game at the time despite being young, and Larry was calling out to his teammates "I'm open, I'm open! Pass it to me before they realize how open I am" despite Rodman being almost glued to him. And Rodman couldn't do much of anything to stop Larry. Larry talked the talked, and ABSOLUTELY walked the walk. Another great example of his trash talk is during a game against the pistons, where he was playing against Dr J, Bird kept repeating to Dr J how many points each of them had scored. By the end of the game, it was 38 to 6, in Bird's favor.

My favorite Larry Bird story is one that John Stockton tells. It was Stockton's rookie year and he was standing by the Utah Jazz bench during warmups. Larry walks by and says, "I'm feeling 43 tonight". By the 3rd quarter he had scored 43 points and checked himself out of the game which the Celtics won by 20 some points.

You have to remember, the 3 point shot had just been adopted. The original purpose was to reward the occasional "ridiculous toss" that happened to go in. Larry was the first to actually use the line as a shooting position. It helped him make his shots. Guaranteed distance. Same shot 180*, just shoot straight.

Many people consider the NBA of the 80s and 90s the golden years for the league and players today wouldn't be able to compete with them. It was gritty, and the talent was off the charts. Sure, today's athletes have all the advantages of having more greats to study and better training and better sports medicine. But let me put it like this: When asked if the 90s championship Bulls teams could beat Lebron's Lakers, Michael Jordan replied, "Yes." When asked as a follow up by how much, Jordan replied, "two or three points." When asked why it would be that close, Jordan replied, "Most of us are almost 60 now." It's probably true, and Bird and the Celtics were arguably the greatest of that era. Also, Bird didn't have the stacked roster that the Lakers had at that time (Magic, Kareem, and Worthy), and they still dominated. One thing they didn't mention about Bird is that not only was he Rookie of the Year and MVP multiple seasons; he also coached the Indiana Pacers and was Coach of the Year. No player has every accomplished that.

I agree. It must also be said that the rules were stricter back then as well. Today's players would foul out in the first quarter if they played under the ruleset that those greats played under. None of this jostling on every step, or the constant traveling as they drive to the basket, etc.

Hank Mohr:. The three point line was not utilized back then like it late became. The 85-86 Celtics averaged almost 5 three point shot attempts a game. @@mattcampbell334 When you win three 3-point contests and only one other player has matched that, you get a reputation. It's not that Bird made so many 3 pointers, but he was one of the clutchest players in NBA history. So, there's that. Factor in that the NBA only adopted the 3-point line in his rookie season with the Celtics. Finally, when you consider how short his career was, it's something.

Most basketball historians consider Bird to be one of the five best in the game's history. His detractors tend to be younger fans who simply can't get past his apparent lack of athleticism. Bird played in the most physical, talent-rich era in NBA history. The list of players whom he dominated reads like a Hall of Fame telephone directory. In my opinion, he and Magic are evenly matched and locked in a dead heat for 2nd best, right behind Jordan. Speaking of MJ, Bird had a winning record against him, and never lost a single playoff game to Jordan's Bulls. Yes, Larry Bird was THAT good.

I don't get the lack of athleticism argument. It is irrelevant. Bird had what he needed to the get the job done. it was his skills that made him a legend. He is considered a legend by other legends. So not giving him respect because his athleticism is just weird.

I was at Larry's first college game at Indiana State. At one point in the game he stole the ball and took off dribbling down the court like a guard. The other teams center had been slow to get down the court so he was able to get back to guard the basket. Larry went up like he was going to try to slam dunk over the bigger man but instead he no-look tossed the ball up and over his shoulder to Harry Morgan (the other forward) who slammed it home over a very bewildered big man. I knew I was in for a treat for the rest of my time there; he was the best all around basketball player I've ever seen

It's always interesting to talk about the greatest players of all time. For sure, Larry Bird was one of them. Yes, he was one of the great shooters of all time. But folks sometimes forget what an incredible all-around player he was. He wasn't just a great shooter, he was also an excellent rebounder and an elite passer. Like Magic, he knew where everyone else was on the floor and make no-look passes with seemingly no effort. And while he lacked the athleticism to be a really good one-on-one defender, he was very good at anticipating passes and causing turnovers and steals. By the way, Kareem was also an elite defender when he was in his prime which is why I think he's the greatest of all time. So yeah, Bird is definitely in the highest echelon of great basketball players.

They went against each other in college for a couple of years and he would’ve been Jordan’s main competition in the East If he hadn’t died of a cocaine overdose a day or to after being drafted. Bird already said he was going to show at rookie camp to get to work. Celtics would have been unbeatable through Bird’s retirement in ‘92.

Having grown up in the 50s, 60s, and 70s I had the privilege of watching BB transform into the game it became. Bird was insane from the floor. His shooting was obvious but his control of the floor was amazing. Nobody passed better, shot better, and just took the other team off their game better. You may think he was selfish based on his numbers but just watch what he did for McHale and Parish from a scoring standpoint. Parish has said that most of his points scored were because of Bird's passing. The Celtics on a fast break were unstoppable, the ball would change hands 3 or 4 times before the basket. Thanks for posting this from a new sub.

I was a Celtics fan as a teenager living in New England in the 1980s. The basketball that the Celtics and the Lakers played was the best I've ever seen. Each team had 3-5 future Hall-of-Famers, and Larry Bird and Magic Johnson stood out among even these great players. From 1980 to 1989, they won 8 of the 10 championship titles. Each team has 17 titles, combining for 34 of the 75 total. Until about 10 years ago, they had combined for half or more of all titles. Both teams have had so many great players. The 1962-63 Celtics had 9 Hall-of-Famers on a team of 12. I can think of no other league that has had the same 2 teams dominate for decades. BTW, the video correctly states that Bird was one of the greatest players ever, and then immediately contradicts itself by repeating the lie that Bird was "quite unathletic." Those 2 statements are mutually exclusive.

Now don't get me wrong, I love our Indiana Pacers. If you haven't ever watched the games where Reggie Miller scores 25 in the 4th quarter or when scores 8 points in 8.9 seconds, all while trash talking with famed movie director and New York Knicks fan Spike Lee, then you really should. It was Miller Time every game and we loved him. But when the Pacers played the Celtics, we felt like we won even when we lost. Larry was an Indiana boy that made good and we were proud of our native son. When Larry retired as a player, he came back home and actually coached the Pacers winning NBA's Coach of the Year in 1997. If there was anyone who lived up to the hype it was Larry Legend.

What I think makes Bird one of the most elite players ever is that he made his teams better. He didn't just rack up impressive personal numbers, he did the things that made the players around him better. And he won the close games with his shooting. Also, not that this makes him good, but before becoming a pro he seriously injured his shooting hand... bad enough that there were concerns if he'd ever be able to play again. And it was bad enough that he said he never shoot as good again as he had before the injury. So as good as he was, he could have been significantly better.

The Boston Celtics in 85-86 season had 5 HOFs they beat the Rockets that year. The Lakers had 5 future HOF's but each were HOF before they came together. Red Auerbach's ability to draft and staff, along with the teams willingness to pass the ball, and get everyone involved is what made them HOF's in the first place. Which Larry had a lot to do with instilling it into his teammates, by leading by example.

Another good one, Kabir! I came from a city, where basketball was not a favorite sport, so I never got to know about the sport. Still, lately, I've been watching these basketball videos, and had I known about Bird and his contemporaries, I would have really been into the sport. You really have to watch the videos of the "old pros" talking about their experience with Bird; really entertaining!

How many players today would play with a fracture in their cheek that was so bad he had to go to the hospital right after the game. In. fact player that is or was on today's team did get hurt with the same injury he not only left the game but some reporter notice that it was the same kind of injury Bird had and remark the difference in player back then and now Bird came back out and still played. Today's player acted up so much people would've thought he was dying and he left the game rest of the game. Today's players were asked why don't you pass more one player actually said because he wanted to win. I doubt any player today could even pass like Bird did he had a talent with passing. The Celtics was so in sync with each other that while the other team wasn't sure if Bird would pass or shoot. His team mates were right there and knew which he would do. The Celtics didn't care who made the winning shot because they were a team and what mattered was a Celtic win. There aren't any teams like that now days.

Len Bias was supposed to be the bridge to the next generation of Celtics. Look at his highlight videos. He was incredible. On draft day, overdosed on coke and died.

His injury-shortened career is like another Boston sports legend: Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr. Orr revolutionized hockey in the late 60s and mid 70s but he was plagued by knee injuries which shortened his career.

Bird won 28 regular season games against Jordan and only lost 17. Bird is also 6-0 against Jordan in the playoffs! Bird is also the founding member of the 50/40/90 club! Bird was a bad man and is undoubtedly top 3!

Hello. My name is Nicholas. I grew up in the Boston area, and still live there. I had floor seats for some of those '85 and '86 Larry games. My understanding of the Len Bias situation is that in the excitement of his newly signed contract, he bought a ball of crack the size of a softball, which was found in his car after the tragedy. My generation of Celtics fans still wonder what could have been. The generation after that was epitomized by the exceptional promise and then on court, televised death of Reggie Lewis. The Celtics and their fans were reeling and directionless until Danny Ainge took over. That story is still playing out.

Larry wound up with three championships. the two that he lost was against an extremely competitive Lakers team that they had beaten in the finals once. also, a very strong 76ers team (in the same division as Boston) kept them from making 2 more trips to the finals
