You can't pick the ball directly off the ground with your hand, hence you have to scoop it up with the stick. It might seem that a player has many options, but outside the skills needed to do them ( not easy) he is being chased, bumped hit by timber and yes fouled all the time, so the top players make it look easier than it really is. Cuts, bruises and damaged fingers are common place. Imagine what it was like before helmets a few years ago!

It was more than likely a battlefield simulation to get young warriors used to melees and violence on the battlefield. Hence the combination of contact, physicality and speed. Two groups rushing at one another with weapons being swung around on an open field. Ancient legendary Irish warriors like Cùchulainn played it as boys and their skills with the hurley and sliotar were legendary.

The part where it said take ball in hand for 3 steps and you said he took 17, the ball wasn't in his hand it was balanced on the hurley ;) The keepers can actually pull off some great saves, pretty sure there a vid on youtube of hurling keeper saves, go find it and there another reaction video. There probably some videos showing more of the hard hits that can happen...it is not uncommon for a hurley (the stick) to get broken on a players shin....you'll also notice they don't wear shinpads (if anyone tried it would be like wearing two massive targets) and helmets were only made mandatory about 10 years ago I think

That video is very sanitised and is the cleaned up version of the sport. Believe me you need to brave as hell to play that game. I tried pretty much every sport you can think of and nohing, and I mean nothing even comes close to playing hurling in terms of intensity and being on edge because you know that in the next tackle you could get hurt badly by a hurl (axe shaped stick 😂) coming across your body at full force. Remember this is an amateur sport and these guys have jobs on Monday morning! I like the idea you had of getting rid of the goalposts and just using a soccer style goal. That would be a very interesting thing to try, I’d never even thought of that concept. In my opinion there’s far too many long range points being scored which causes long breaks in play and the art of defending has been reduced.
@mischiefmanaged6615 Жыл бұрын
Ok so this is the low down GOALS: over the bar = 1 point . In the goals = (sometimes) 3 points STEPS: If the ball is on the axe shaped stick you can take as many steps as you want but if it is in your hand you only have 4 steps BATTING: as you saw earlier, the man smashed his hurley because he couldn't catch it so by batting it he could get it to a teammate HOOKING: He stops the player from shooting by hooking his hurley with his own Hope this helps! ( Ps I play in goals but it's not as bad as it seems)

Couple of things. 1 can't pick the ball off the ground with your hand. 2. Can only take 3 steps with the ball in your hand, after that have to balance it on the hurley (stick) . 3. can't throw it thats why they hit it with their hand. 4. Almost all the same hits are allowed in this as in AFL. 6. There is a Irish version of AFL whuch is basically this sport but with a ball. Once a year an Irish team plays the Aussie team in whats called "International rules".

You can only hold it in your hand for 3 steps, after which you need to use the hurl (the stick) Croke Park, the main stadium in Dublin for Gaelic Games, is the 4th largest stadium in Europe. Scoring a goal is actually not as easy as you'd think, because the keepers in Hurling aren't right in the head, and make incredible saves. Plus there is a big buzz seeing a player at some weird angle near the sidelines manage to put the sliotar(the ball which is not a soft ball at all) over the bar from 50 yards out from the goal under pressure. This sport is talked about in the most ancient of irish folktales. You should check out the other major Gaelic game in Ireland, Gaelic Football.

Do also remember that the ball used in hurling, the "sliothar" (prounced "shlioth-ahr) , is covered in leather and at 110 grams, is only a little less than the weight of a cricket ball which weighs 5.5 ounces or 156 grams. This should give you a better persepective about brave, in terms of catching, striking, and trying to save balls in hurling.

Toughest sport on earth, to educate yourself on what happens behind the scenes (ignoring the ruel book). Then you might be able to decide is hurling a game for the though. I would just like to remind you that this is an armature game, it has been around for 3000 years. People play it not for money or fame , instead they play it for their community, their parish, their county, with their friends and neighbour's. Every player is a volunteer, they all have jobs, hurling is a hobby but one that they take very seriously. most players have to travel long distances to get to training several times a week , and they dont get played every extra moment is spent training or travelling to training. It is unfair to say that this is a sport of speed not bravery but every aspect of this game is brave.
