I've been driving around the Chicago suburbs recently and have noticed we do have some places with roundabouts and they are FAR better than traffic lights. Having never used one before, it was very simple to pick up how it works on the fly and haven't yet seen any problems that you normally get during lights like accidents or pissed off people honking. EDIT: granted my sample size will be tiny.

I don't know about other peoples areas in the U.S. but in out area, everywhere there is a Roundabout, there is always somebody who drives the opposite way around it causing accidents or very close calls. It would definitely not be a good idea in our area.
@danielm60492 жыл бұрын
I'd rather keep the intersections. My reasoning is that roundabouts really need to be a certain size to work correctly. There are three roundabouts that were put in over the last couple of years in my area, two are larger and work ok. However one is small and it's a nightmare to go through because there is barely enough space for my Miata to fit, let alone a larger vehicle like my full size pickup. Then of course there are the people who just barge out in front of you or just don't know how to use a roundabout.

@@kabirconsiders In the US, accident rates tend to go *up* slightly when roundabouts are first put in (they may come down later as people get more familiar with them, not sure). The big advantage they tend to have is that the accidents that do happen, happen at slower speeds. So even if the number of crashes goes up, the number of injuries and deaths from crashes drops sharply.
@Nope9912 жыл бұрын
@@kabirconsiders Yes that's exactly the reason. People in the US tend to fear change. And for roundabouts this is especially true. People are just dumber than the roundabout itself. Did you know that after the 1st Fast & Furious movie, they had to put out a disclaimer on the movie because idiots were trying to drive under 18 wheeler trucks? The disclaimer has been on every F&F since then. Plus, they're placed in areas that don't have heavy traffic anyhow.

Not every intersection can be built with a roundabout, especially with existing infrastructure compared to types of traffic. That being said but they are gaining in popularity here in the US and they definitely have their place. Here in Michigan, we have what are called "Michigan Lefts" for many of our divided roads. They operate with the same premise as a roundabout but using regular lights. In a Michigan Left, those who want to turn left or perform a U-Turn cross the intersection with the rest of the nonturning traffic. A little distance afterwards, the left lane becomes a U-Turn in the opposite direction. After completing the U-Turn, you switch to the right lane and turn right at the intersection. Like a roundabout, you are never driving across oncoming traffic. And yes, some intersections will have you turn right first and then make you complete the U-Turn. Newer construction in Michigan is favoring roundabouts, but Michigan Lefts can be better when dealing with a lot of semis mixed in with cars. Another construction gaining popularity are diverging diamonds. A good example for these are at intersections coinciding with highway on and off ramps in which you have a particularly large amount of traffic turning left. These are also useful where the intersection can be lengthened along the highway but not as much cross wise.

But I kind of wish that the intersection outside of my house had a roundabout instead of a light. They've decided that adding a turn arrow on that intersection is too expensive but during the school year you might end up sitting in the turn lane for three or four turns because the road isn't ever clear enough for you to turn. I definitely think that if adding an Arrow light is too expensive then they should try at around about there. I don't know. Maybe it's more money to maintain aroundabout than I'm thinking.

In the United States you give way to the left on a roundabout. This confuses the idiot's because at stop signs and intersections the person to the fight has right of wat where it is the opposite at tne roundabout. We have more collisions at roundabouts because people still treat them as if it were a regular intersection. There is even a section in drivers manuals that states that the right of way is different on a roundabout and 97 percent of the people mis this question on the test. On most drivers tests you pass with a score of 90% or higher and missing this question on a 50 question test will result in a score of 98 meaning that you still pass.
