I've lived in 9 different states (New York, Montana, Alaska, Washington, Texas, Oregon, Louisiana, Colorado, California) and they all vary pretty significantly in surprising ways. There a lot of similarities too, but to understand America it really takes seeing most of the country. I worked for a European company and lived and worked in the Netherlands for a but and a lot of my European coworkers were surprised with the sheer size and diversity (culturally, cuisine, accents, etc.) they encountered visiting or working in the States.

You might be surprised to know that the largest immigrant communities in New York City these days don't actually come from Europe. NYC has the largest Chinese community in the world outside Asia (some estimates up to 700,000 people), as well as the largest populations of people from the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Ecuador outside of those countries, and a large proportion of the city comes from the Caribbean in general. It also has the second-largest Bangladeshi population outside Bangladesh (after London of course).

@@kimberlys8422 I would say you can't underestimate the importance of networks in immigration trends. The Caribbean and Chinese communities in NYC are already two or more generations old, and the South Asan communities are a few decades old. Already established communities attract newer immigrants to the extent that people will immigrate to a place just because people who are from the same village as they are from in the home country are already there, forget about being from the same country. You immigrate, you get a job in your second cousin's bodega breaking down boxes in the storeroom, you sleep on the floor in the corner of your uncle's living room, you get a second job in your dad's childhood friend's restaurant washing dishes...and that is how you make your way in your new country. These kinds of networks play a bigger role in immigration than factors like geographical proximity or simple cost of living.

For reasons that won't fit in a KZbin comment, the US sold itself a bill of goods mid-century that it is EITHER cars OR transit. So we tore out transit, especially trains. We had train systems on par with the rest of the developed world and sold them out to snake oil salesmen on the promise of the personal car completely replacing the need for them (rather than augmenting). Hell, that process could probably be a whole series of reactions if you really want to go down that rabbit hole.

I have never been to NY, but what I see on TV, it looks busy with people, tall buildings which might block the sunlight. I have been born and raised in the west part of L.A. You went to Venice Beach and L.A.X. I live between those two areas in Playa del Rey. I believe our #1 reason to live in L.A. or most parts of CA is the weather. During the winter, there might be a chill in the air at the beach, but a drive East is probably the closest ski area. Probably the best ski area was next door to Yosemite over the Sierras, Mammoth Mountain and Lakes. We have a lot of different cultures, nationalities, jobs during the good economic times, but unfortunately, we have crime (after the Covid lockdown, more theft type crimes) and earthquakes. L.A, covers a lot of land and there are independent cities inside the L.A. areas. The County as a whole covers other area that get really hot in the summer and less populated. We have the beaches/coast, mountains, different types of cities atmosphere. L.A. still has their studios. Not far from me in Culver City was the MGM movie studio which now is Sony. I been there for a live taping of Wheel of Fortune. Unfortunately, we have less filming here. One thing is the taxes, all the permits to close streets, the cars and trucks for the stars, dressing rooms, catering, etc... they have to hire security and where I live, not much parking so they bring there vans for transporting people here and there. Also, the people in L.A. wants more money in wages than other places in America. Because of the crimes, job loss and taxes, we have jobs leaving to other states where taxes are lower and housing is cheaper and you get more land. Maybe a better school system since L.A. is lenient with kids graduating high school without the ability to do basic english and math. High speed rail... We have a lot of environmentalists in L.A. and San Francisco (those two areas, also San Diego, decides our laws in our state because most of the voting public lives in those cities. As a whole if you look on the voting map, land wise, the Republicans cover most of the state and those three cities combine has the most voting public. Our state's politicians want to get high speed rail. I think we got something past. They fool the public to vote on it because they under budget it and there is so much red tape, permits, environmental studies and it takes time, and the materials and workers cannot do it for the budget CA set aside. We were supposed to get high speed rail from L.A. to San Fran. You would think to start it in either city and go from there. No. It was started in between those cities in the farming areas, and it is a train to nowhere. They just laid the tracks down with no beginning or end. Ran out of money. Plus, the State did not purchase the land from those who own it. Our State has been plans for the environment, get the funds, but not enough and the delays. There were plans for a train from L.A. to Las Vegas too. I do not drive. I used to take the public buses to get here and there. Because of the lack of riders in my area, no more bus. My neighborhood is filled with environmentalists and the still drive their cars. Also what buses we had in my area and still have, the bus comes once an hour. There are times when I was on the bus, the driver feels why go the rest of the way with no riders. And they see me on the bus. They ask if they can go and pick up something to eat and they will finish the ride. Or when they decide no to go the whole route, I have to wait another hour for hopefully a next bus to come. The nearby adjoining city's Santa Monica and Culver City buses, maybe they are on busy streets, but there is more an hour and filled. A lot of services in L.A. are not too great. L.A. is too big, and some areas need more funds for their services than other areas that pay more of the taxes. The other two cities I mentioned, their housing cost more and better public schools because they are smaller cities and maybe have certain laws and rules that they do not slack off at. CA borders Mexico and maybe that is the reason we have a high Hispanic population. There are some who are illegal, and CA welcomes them, not so much the past 4 years, but some business hired the illegals because they will work for minimum wages. Or start they own landscape/construction businesses. The last three years with our President letting in 8 million illegals and 1 million+ snuck in, I do not know how our future is going to be. At least the illegals are spread across the larger cities of the U.S. Unfortunately, those liberal cities that welcome them, now know what the Texans were going through. Now the public knows that they will get less services to cover for the care of the illegals. NY gets upset of 10,000 illegals coming into their city, but southern Texas was getting that a day and they did not want the illegals coming in the first place. CA has a larger population of the homeless. The last few years, the city has been lenient and letting the make their homes here and there with no facilities for them to use. Things change, like NY, once your neighborhood is overwhelmed with homeless population on your streets, then they want a change. The city moves them, cleans up the area and they come back again. U.S. has to hit bottom for a change in the laws. The last three years maybe minds will change. Interesting story I heard, 1849 was the Gold Rush in CA., not too far from the bay area. Sutter's Creek and spread to other deserted areas. The men were mining the gold, but the Chinese came to the areas for service type jobs; laundry, meals, clothing, etc... Services the men needed. The Chinese got wealthy due to naming their price on the services. The men made it rich, but with the cost of things, drinking, women, gun fights, etc... ran out of money. Some areas just died after the gold rush. One town, called Bodie, east of the sierras, it is so beautiful, the mountains, open land, but it is a ghost town now. One can tour it. But the original buildings are still there to look at. It is beautiful with the buildings weathered wood, some falling apart. There is a cemetery there of those who died during its heyday.

Hi Kabir! New York is built on granite and is located in a very small area, so the only way to build is up. LA is in an earthquake zone and it's safer and cheaper to build out. Every year wildfires sweep California since it's the end of the dry season. Just enough vegetation grows in the spring and early summer, then dies, leaving a tinderbox. What amazes me is people keep building in the Hollywood hills, which is expensive territory, but burns every year. It's hard to get firefighting equipment there and all these multi million dollar homes go up in smoke.

New York had some immunity to this because it was highly developed before the advent of cars, The already had subways and high population density. LA has mostly been built since then. Then there's the vicious cycle that, where mass transit service is poor and sparsely used, there is a stigma that says you are uncool or undesirable if you use it.

New York City appeared so hustle & bustle is alot of places there are businesses so you have alot of people running to or from appointments, lunch, or rushing to catch the right bus or train home to get home for dinner. Los Angeles has a large Hispanic population because their governor declared California a sanctuary city so latinos from Mexico and South America won't get deported there, with in mind to paraphrase Nancy Pelosi they need them to pick the fruits and vegetables. They also become domestic help, gardeners, and laborers in one field or another. Why was Time Square still busy at 9pm, what does Frank Sinatra sing about in his song New York New York? " I wanna wake in the city that never sleeps . . . ." You don't see people walking the streets in LA because it isn't safe. I know this for a fact because I visited a friend in North Hollywood and I got bored in her apartment so I left her a note saying I walked to the galleria. Well, I got stopped along the way by a kid on a bike who told me it wasn't safe for people to be walking around here. I looked around, and he was right other than the few cars and occasional bus no one was on the street. I'll leave the story there it's a long one. If they don't drive into the city or to the studio, they have a driver or take a bus. If you mean in the city around the court house you'll see much more people than I did.

L.A. is far too spread out for public transport. There is public transport but it takes a lot of transfers to get from one place to another. If you lived in the San Fernando Valley and had to go to Venice Beach for work, it could take hours because you would have to take transport from where you live, which could be a couple miles from a main street with a bus line, then probably transfer to another bus that would take you to a hub that would then take you to Venice Beach. Just look at the network of freeways and understand the way that people travel in Los Angeles. If you don't have a car, you are going to spend a lot of time commuting. If you live near a bus line, you might be able to take it to Grand Central Station then take a train to the beach then a bus to where you work but when you consider that people often work 30 to 50 miles from their home, you start to get an understanding about how impossible it would be to make public transport convenient or affordable. If you live in L.A. City, it is not difficult to use public transportation but once you get beyond that, it is difficult.

@@amyb1078 I vaguely remember using subways when I was a very young child. There were busses and streetcars too. They later did away with the streetcars to make room for the large amount of automobiles that were now on the roads in Downtown. They also changed the two way streets to one way streets. I remember the Angel's Flight line. That was fun and super steep.

At one point Los Angeles had the best public transportation in the country, but what happened was car manufacturers got together, colluded illegally, and bought up the rail, trolley, and bus lines and dismantled them. We've been a car culture ever since. God bless American corruption.

Re: Metro rail/trains. There’s probably a lot of Not In My Back Yard [NIMBY] types in LA. So, by start up, the state would be facing a lot of that, whereas NYC probably started that but because it started so early, there probably wasn’t as much complaining way back then. Just guessing.

Loved the skyscrapers. I was a bookworm growing up. Two of my older brothers and their families were living in NY. Eventually I moved there. Not in the city but on the outskirts. Sorry for the long history.😅 Thanks Kabir Considers! Great Reaction!🤩👌✌️

Hispanic/latino influence in California (and the southwestern US in general) has far more to do with recent and continued immigration from Mexico, so it’s not really seen as having to do much with Spanish colonialism from hundreds of years ago. LA has a very distinctly Mexican-American culture, not Spanish. I believe in Texas, only as of this year, Hispanics passed non-Hispanic whites as the largest demographic group in the state, so clearly this immigration is still going strong all over the southwest.

New Mexico has become a center of filmmaking. 100 years ago, it was the center, around Las Vegas New Mexico, which sits on the border of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. The industry has returned due to the same geological choices, and tax breaks and lower cost of living. I think Breaking Bad helped jumpstart the return of producers back to NM.

If you think the east and west coasts are different, wait until you visit the non-coastal areas in between. From my perspective, living in a city of ten thousand people in central Ohio, the differences between New York City and Los Angeles are minor footnotes, compared to how different those places are from here.

La metro and bus is #1.75 with 2hrs free transfers. One of the cheapest in all of Amerika. More wozu use it if LA was built like most worlds cities with a central core like central London or Manhattan. Downtown LA is the place that gets many transit users because traffic and expensive parking fees

As a southerner the south is totally different than the rest of the country with some transplants setting up shop in between, it's almost in some parts of the south like being in a different country and that is so cool to me. The SOUTH is definitely cooler. I have Lived in Los Angeles area before with relatives there but honestly i would never live in New York, been there a few times. And i would never live in California again. really liked LA for a while when i was there for what it was but that's it. Both cities have huge problems that 99.9% American cities would never want, especially California now and New York is a wreck too, If i had to pick between cities to stay i would CHOOSE Los Angeles!! It has a lot of beautiful landscape, Palm trees, good weather, has tons of space, wide open, the mountains, dessert, beaches and more. and the vibe has more groove, New York is always pop, pop, fizz fizz

I wish that people from England like Kabir would understand the geography here. They talk about NY,NY and the Burroughs. They have no idea about the other cities in NY. Upstate,Long Island. There are suburbs that are what Kabir said California was to him “laid back”. You can find laid back in other parts of NY. They don’t understand the concept of cities and states. I hear them speak about cities and states as if they’re two different things. For instance I heard Kabir say something like yeah because Vegas is this way and Nevada is so.. But,He spoke as if it was two different places. Many of the KZbinrs from “Across the Pond “(Laurence) speak of cities and states the same way. A disclaimer; Not Laurence. Lol

I'm sure we do. But both cities are a great introduction to the diversity and energy of the country, especially for someone coming from London. I know that bothers many in the middle of the country, which is far less diverse. Oh, and BTW, there's so much more to both California and New York than their major cities. The coastal and rural areas of both states are probably similar to the Midwest and South.

Many films are made in the UK to get away from the American Actor's and filmmaker's unions. George Lucas famously filmed Star Wars in the uk for this reason. The iconic opening scroll and Star Wars would have never happened in the United States because union rules dictated that the actors and filmmakers names must appear before anything else in a film. That would have upset the flow and purpose of the story in Star Wars, But he also had to put up with the crew demanding tea time at regimented hours. True story. 😂

California is 1/2 hispanic because Mexico is next door and no one is stopped. In fact, half way between San Diego and LA is the check point for smuggling people. Not very effective when it is 100 miles from the border. Of course, Mexico did rule 200 years ago and many people come from down south to work in Agriculture.
