I am currently living in the San Fernando Valley. To my slight northwest, there is the Hurst Fire (thankfully my friend and their family evavuated). To my East (heading in my direction) is the Eaton Fire. To my Southwest is the Palisades Fire (my mentor and her family don't need to evacuate yet). To my South, the Sunset Fire (close by to another dear friend and their family). I am a teacher and we were supposed to start the spring semester, but will not start for at least the rest of the week.

Update: My friend from the Hurst Fire was able to head home yesterday afternoon around 4 pm. Her house is standing and police ensured that there were no looting. The Eaton Fire is no longer moving westward. My mentor and her family thankfully did not have to evacuate. I did have a scare last night when the Foothill Fire (very small) started only 2 blocks away from my home...that was quite an adrenaline rush for a few minutes before our INCREDIBLE FIRST RESPONDERS got it within 10 minutes.

I live in the Boston/Plymouth Massachusetts area, so I will never experience fire like this, however, I can‘t help but think of the pets and also wild animals lost in these fires. I just saw on the news a story about people attempting to save their horses from the stables. Some horses just had to be set free to have any chance at all to survive. How about farm animals? My heart is bleeding sorrow for everyone affected.

The areas that are burning are not farm areas. At least I don’t think there are any farms in those areas but there could be animal sanctuaries.

@dianatopoulos5792 - Hello. I saw a video and story on the news tonight of a single horse trapped in a fenced area with huge orange flames burning all around. It showed a fire fighter chopping open the fence and climbing inside. They didn't show further video but the reporter said the horse was now safe.

man oh man, LAYERED snow and ice? that's rough...I was kid in PA in 92 when we had that happen, we got an inch of freezing rain, then 10 inches of snow, then another inch of freezing rain on top of it. They couldn't even get the plow trucks out of the county depots for several days, the driveways were all too steep because theyd been tucked into out of the way places, so they had to manually break up and shovel all that snow and ice just to get the equipment in and out. We didn't have school for a month. The fact that it's in the upper 20s here in FL this morning tells me it must be cold AF up there. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay off the road if you can! And don't forget to toss a bag of kitty litter in the trunk if you do have to go out!

My son has spent the last 24 years as an Oregon Dept of Forestry Rough Terrain Wildland Firefighter (engine boss/crew boss for many years) and he and his crew have been deployed to California for 22 of those 24 years to fight multiple fires. And once again he and his crew just arrived in California. With those winds a firebrand (flying flaming ember), depending on the composition and size, can travel up to 23 miles/37 kilometers and ignite another fire incident.

I live in Southern California for over the last 30 years and I've never seen anything this bad, especially in January. Fortunately I'm safe but some people I work with are evacuated, etc. There's a lot of misinformation and politics being thrown around but the simple fact is that this is a perfect storm of conditions. In California, winter is the "wet season" and the rest of the year is dry. We had three winters of record breaking rain which means more vegetation. This year there has been no rain so far. Most of the time, winds low from the Pacific Ocean into the LA basin. Because of air pressure changes this air flow reverses and now you have warm, dry air blowing from the deserts and funnels through the mountains surrounding the basin. We call them Santa Ana winds and they happen the most between September-November. This windstorm event is an unusual one because it's blowing in unusual areas and much more speed than usual. Now you have the recipe for a disastrous fire. It's been calm most of Wednesday but there's supposed to be more wind coming on Thursday night. Though it's supposed to be much weaker. Also a lot of fire agencies have mutual aid agreements up and down the West Coast. This includes Canada and Australia. You'll often hear of firefighters in California going in our winter to help the Aussies fight their summer fires. Australian firefighters return the favor too. Currently there's Canadian firefighters that have come down to help.

I read somewhere yesterday that this is the worst fire in history that LA has ever had. Airbnb has offered free places for people to stay at no cost for a week and others away from the fire are opening their homes and offices for people needing a place to stay. Arizona has a few fire departments sending firefighters to help out. Our air quality throughout Arizona has been affected from the smoke of these fires. I read about at least 2 celebrities losing everything after their homes have burned down. The LA Rams vs Minnesota Vikings game may have to moved down here to Glendale, Arizona if they can’t get the fire under control by the weekend.

5 months ago we lost our beautiful park to the Park Fire. When all was said and done, it burned more than 460,000 acres. The Palisades Fire is burning at a speed of 4 football fields per minute, the Camp Fire in our sister town of Paradise burned at a rate of 80 football fields per minute, that is 16 times faster, and killed 85 people. The fire season in California is only getting worse and worse each year. I personally am so tired of all the bad news. You simply feel helpless. This fire is extremely bad because the shear number of structures lost. The homes and businesses are built so close to each other because of the prime real estate, so it spreads from house to house so easily. It is definitely heartbreaking for all of us here in CA. Unless you have experienced a fire like this, you have no idea how black the sky is in the middle of the blaze. When the Camp Fire hit Paradise, we fell directly under the smoke plume and although it was 10 in the morning, it was as black as 11 at night. You could not see without headlights and street lights on.

The acreage numbers are much larger than the numbers earlier in the video you shared, the number of houses destroyed as of Thursday morning is approaching 1600, as many as half of them don’t have fire insurance. A couple of the fires are suspicious origin because they were not downwind of the fire and as many as 20 miles away. All of the fires in the last 25 years have been devastating, destroying communities and in some cases whole towns.

There's a low pressure system near the Gulf, which goes counter clockwise. So on the West side, they're getting these huge winds from the north. Meanwhile, as that low heads eastward, it's bringing snow and freezing rain from moisture from the Gulf with winds from the south. Hopefully when this low pressure system moves out over the east coast, the winds in California will calm down enough for firefighters to get a handle on these horrific fires. We're prepped in Atlanta for several inches of snow, then ice after. Very uncommon for the Atlanta area.

As a former nurse in a prison I can say I absolutely respect the fact that California allows inmates on a volunteer status to receive some training to help fight the wildfires and earn way more than any other inmate would. After release they can actually request their record to expunged based on the crime and how they acted in prison but this opens the possibility they could actually go to the fire academy and make a better life for themselves. We had a program where our inmates could do work for a factory work in the prison and make money to send to their families and it actually gave them a trade vs just being penalized not there.

First footage I'm seeing of this, I've heard of the fires but haven't really had time to look them up. I can't imagine what that would be like. I've seen smoky skies from forest fires in my area before but never had any fires that close up, nor do we have such strong winds. The combination of both would be terrifying. I've heard of insurance companies not offering coverage anymore, we could compare it to us losing flood coverage in some places because the risk becomes too high and is repetitive... sadly as time goes I feel like most natural disasters will become less and less covered by insurance so my heart truly goes out to everyone affected who are literally losing everything short of any aid the government might provide. It might help you get back on your feet but it'll never replace everything they worked so hard for.

I think these fires are worse because of the location. Usually, the large fires occur more in the northern parts of California where the mountains inhibit effective firefighting efforts. That is not to say that cities and towns are not threatened or destroyed. They do however tend to be smaller and surrounded by wilderness (that can be plowed, cut or burned to prevent spread). These fires are happening in LA county, the most densely populated part of the state. LA is also surrounded by mountains and brush, but there re so many homes and businesses, there is no way to create an effective fire line. It would be similar, I think, to these type of conditions breaking out in the City of London, but without any rivers nearby. (The LA river doesn't count, there is barely any water)The City of London my be small, but greater London is huge. So we are looking at potential devastation like the great fire of London way, back when, but with many more people in harms way.

"The devastating nature of the fires is in part due to *climate change,* experts say, which has exacerbated the size, intensity, and damage caused by the wildfires in recent years. The southwestern U.S. is undergoing the driest 22-year period in the last 1,200 years. As temperatures have risen, so has the aridity, or dryness of the vegetation, which proved disastrous when coupled with the gusty Santa Ana winds. “The hot and dry Santa Ana winds that often affect the southern California region and fuel large wildfires such as the ongoing one, only make things worse,” said Imperial College London Professor Apostolos Voulgarakis in a statement. “Research has shown that the occurrence of Santa Ana winds in the autumn are also likely to get worse with *climate change,* leading to even drier vegetation, fast fire spread and more intense late-season wildfires.” Time, January 8, 2025 Can we address capitalism driven climate change yet? Or should we wait another ten years?

It’s amazing how you can witness events like this and still have the audacity to believe that we can control the climate. What’s really changed over the last decades is the creation of “endangered “ species of plants and creatures that have taken precedence over humans. They divert water to save a snail while whole communities go dry. They ignore forest management necessities. You can’t stop what’s coming but you don’t have to be stupid about it.
@LordLOC
@LordLOC 4 күн бұрын
Only moronic right-wing wack jobs think we can control the climate. Or the weather in some cases these days. What we are doing is altering the climate. Big difference. And trying to save endangered species doesn't take precedence over humans, but when possible, they try to do what they can to save them. Diverting water in a state known for major fires wasn't the smartest thing to do, I don't think anyone would argue that. But they certainly don't ignore forest management either. Budgets being cut, manpower dwindling, lack of empathy from others, all adds up to what we have going on now sadly.

While it's true she cut that from their budget, the 2025 fiscal year budget for the LAFD was still nearly $1 billion. That's a pretty small percentage of the overall budget in the end. Sure, more money might have helped with staffing. But in the end, you can't plan for 100 mph winds like this.

The wilderness type of fires burns more ground/acreage and lasts for days because of the location and the terrain. This fire I believe will be more financially costly due to the property damage. The Pacific Palisades/Malibu fires was in a residential neighborhood with blocks or homes one after the other. Malibu has more of the large homes, property (more landscaping to maintain) in the hills, mountainous, canyons that have limited access of getting in or out or along the coast line with very little distance between homes. We do not know of the cause that started the fire, either mother nature/lightning strike, accident along with negligence of a car driver throwing out their cigarette butt, or a spark from a passing car or landscaping tool, or purposely by arson. We are given about the upcoming weather reports of the Santa Ana winds and warning not to do open outside fire pits, fireplaces, fireworks because the strong, dry, warm winds and dry landscapes. It will also be debated and finger pointed by L.A./CA lawmakers and how they use the collected tax budgets and mismanagement of funds in regard to their personal projects when the first priority should be the safety (fires, crimes) of our city/state's residents and property, then cutting back the police and fire departments. These two neighbors have very costly homes (cost of being at a certain location and how they run their communities, less crime, better run public schools, community activism and very influential people that come from the world of entertainment, sports and/or business/wealth). It is a shame the amount of property taxes they pay and the services they receive, that is why the community has to help each other because the government services cannot be relied on in urgent times of need. Unfortunately, many of these people have the money that help elected leaders that run our city. CA is a left leaning state and after decades of not finding solutions and funds wasted on projects that might help a few with no guarantees if it would help the person to do things on their own or they will forever take and take without bettering themselves, generations after generations. I have been around L.A. for over 6 decades and I feel the last 40 years has started the decline in services, education, self=sufficiency and respect, and the taxes go up and up. I always felt, in time we will hit rock bottom to turn our voting in a different path. I really thought last November's election the people of CA (L.A. and other coastal communities who have the most voters that decides on what government we will have locally, state and national), especially what has happened to our cities the last several years. But no, there is more negative to get to the bottom to convince our voters maybe another view, laws, commitment, sacrifice including higher taxes. At least with the higher taxes, we will see things done and improved to make our state functional, hopefully less crimes, business thriving, improving our infrastructure, better utilities, respecting and appreciating the work of the police, firefighters and military, respecting and helping our neighbors, and we can all get along. Once we can get in another mind set and CA becomes the golden state and sunshine, then we can lower the taxes since everything will be in place, functioning and productive. In the end, the majority of Californians/Angelenos vote for the city/state we live in. L.A. was the desert before and when L.A. (the film industry, jobs and weather) was starting to grow, the question was, we need water and then the aqueduct came, unfortunately the areas we took the water from lost too. Our lawmaker's priority was not how to capture mother nature's free rain, and some years we do get record levels that can help most years of lack of rain. Or even the costly de-saltation plants with our Pacific Ocean that that borders our state. Along with our mindful of not wasting water and conserving. In my neighborhood, once a year the property owners need to clear the weeds and dried brush around their properties to prevent the spread of fires. We need to invest how to do that in rural and state/national parks and forests to minimize the spread of fires by controlled (so it does not cause the start of a fire, by checking the weather and winds) burns. Also, the homeless that build fires to keep themselves warm during the winter. It will be interesting regarding the lack of water issue in the Palisades area that might be responsible to the excess of homes being destroyed, and if City's mismanagement on of water supply and function had a part in it. Yesterday, our mayor did not give any answers, the governor (as with other negative issues) flips the story and/or blame elsewhere, and the President spoken how he became a great, grandfather that day.

The sad part is this could have been mitigated by proper Wildfire management. Southern California Burns every year. The pinyon Pines in the Angeles Crest forest need fire to release its seeds. In the 1950s 60s and 70s when I was a young kid we had fires every year but nothing like this Devastation because no one lived in the Hills Now The Hills are covered with homes. California is a semi-arid region. And all the people in La want green Lawns fancy trees fancy bushes at adds to the destruction of this fire. All my life I have questioned why they never take into consideration that this happens all the time

Thank the policies of the californian democrats for lacking forest management, water management and emergency services management. And thank those guys in black hoodies for playing with matches again.

Of course it was the democrats fault, what else could it possibly be? Everything is a liberal's fault. Liberals made Taco Bell remove menu items, liberals made Playboy stop being Playboy. Democrats are to blame for everything in this country. That's how it goes, right? Or maybe it's the fact the LA area hasn't seen a single drop of rain since last April? Or the 100 mph winds?

Hi Kabir, There is no water. None in the hydrants either. California is sending the water from the mountains out to the ocean to save a tiny fish. Their needs to be some common sense!

Good grief. Los Angeles has nothing to do with saving the snail dart in NORTHERN California. The hydrants did lose pressure from the vast volumes of water needed to fight these fires. Los Angeles Water & Power worked overtime to try to pump water and refill the water tanks and regain pressure. You don't know what you're talking about, foo

Most of these people affected in LA or celebrities or are well beyond their means to be able to bounce back from this situation like nothing happened. Given, I genuinely hope everyone and their pets and loved ones are safe but you still have workers finding dead bodies in WNC with no help🤷🏻‍♀️. No one really needs Los Angeles anyways. Glad they're getting plenty of media coverage..

@ Given their occurrence vs Cali it’s no comparison outside of Texas which is mostly unused dry vegetation with minimal housing/human population or dense fauna. The MAJORITY, by far, of homes and fauna displacement is from California. The largest is Alaska but that fire burned unused land which regrows and there were plenty of locations for animals to go in the surrounding areas. California has condensed forests which cause mass death in animals as there’s nowhere really to go. As far as deadly goes Cali leads

Google: 15314 Sunset Blvd. Pacific Palisades CA to see what that street looked like pre-fire. I grew up in Southern CA (now in MA), and it breaks my heart that some friends have lost their homes. It is incredible that the fire hydrants were devoid of water.
