More people who run from the police get away, than you think. There are numerous rules an officer has to abide by when in a high speed pursuit of a criminal. One rule is the officer has to terminate the pursuit of they enter a highly residential or highly travelled area. The police department for the town I reside in, lost an officer on July 8th 2012, due to a high speed chase that was not properly terminated when it should have been. The worst part about that chase was the perpetrator was a young man, who was trying to get into our local police training course and due to where he lived, was rejected & had been bar hopping to drown out his sorrows, when he was caught going the wrong way on a one way street and ran from the officer. The officer who was killed was responding to back up the first unit & was hit by the fleeing suspect & killed instantly, leaving behind a wife who was also an active officer for the police department & a very young son. You mitigate the stress to a great extent by constantly reminding yourself that because of your actions and because you are willing to do the job that most people just can't do. That you are potentially saving innocent lives. And hopefully giving the offenders a chance to realize that they are not doing themselves any favors by their own criminal behaviors. And the eternal hope that at least a few of them. Will have the intelligence and cognitive abilities to understand and change their ways of thinking. And eventually become productive citizens of our society.

Very few cars get away from a police chase. If there is traffic, the police will stop following the criminal because of the unsafe speed the criminal is doing in hopes the criminal will slow down. There are helicopters that follow the criminal from the air. I noticed one way to avoid getting caught, go into a covered parking lot. Get out and run into the mall and blend in with the rest of the customers. The police probably will lock down the mall, and each shopper will have to be looked at to make sure he was not the criminal. Best to have a change of clothing to disguise yourself since they will be eyeing anyone with what the driving person was wearing. This method is for stolen cars. Do not forget to wear gloves and not leave DNA inside the car (hair, sweat) you had your own car, the police could track you down. I see more motorcyclist to get away from the police by using this method. Where I live, very close to L.A.X. (LA, CA) airport. The police helicopters cannot fly near the airports. If a person has a plan, drive to the airport and dump your car and get lost. If a criminal that can drive 100 mph and not get into an accident, they should use their driving talents and no fear with a legitimate job in car racing.

This is what law enforcement faces every damn day to the tune of 36,000,000 encounters per year in the US alone. The only cases you ever hear about are the dozen or so where an "unarmed" man gets shot in the midst of his crime. Of course to the media "unarmed" means he left the gun on the seat of the car after emptying the clip during the chase. God bless the men and women sacrificing, at times, everything to keep the masses safe from idiots like those shown here.

If you notice, he hit him at an angle and continued at that angle missing the guy after he hit the ground. If he was trying to run over him, the car would have done just that when the guy was on the ground.
