Budweiser was originally delivered on wagons pulled by horses. Their iconic Clydesdales are their symbol. The commercial of the horses kneeling are bowing in reverence to the location of where the World Trade Center towers once stood. The commercial was aired during the Superbowl in February of 2002 after 9/11/01. Incredibly emotional. The whole nation cried that day.

The Super Bowl XXXVI commercial at 8:30 aired 5 months after 9/11, and afterwards Budweiser never aired it on television again because it wasn't meant as a _"commercial,"_ but rather a tribute/sign of respect.

What most people don't know is that Budweiser has a number of Clydesdale teams all around the country. They have one in Hawaii, and I did a short documentary on them. What it takes to get them prepped for an event is amazing: baths, brushing, coat trimming, mane and tail care all the night before. Then next morning they load them onto trucks as big as moving vans. The horses are trained to pee and poop on command, so before they are loaded up, they get a whistle and they all go. They do the same thing in the truck when they arrive at destination so they don't mess up public walkways. They then get all their tackle on, and each horse wears approximately $45,000 worth of all that shiny stuff. Then they are all hitched up to the wagon, and when the Budweiser music comes on, all the horses perk up their heads and start strutting. They are beautiful and they know it!

Canadians remember too- all the planes that weren't allowed to land in the U.S. were rerouted to there. My grandparents hometown of Gander, Newfoundland took in almost 3x their towns population for nearly a week- all passengers were treated like family. There is a play about it called 'Come from Away'.

The Budweiser Clydesdales are symbolic for Budweiser. They have a large stable where they breed, raise and train those magnificent horses. Budweiser takes great care and pride in their Clydesdales. Yes, they are huge. They can make a man 6ft tall look small. Countless people know and love the Clydesdales in the US. The Budweiser super bowl commercials are almost always the best of the bunch. People who don't do football will tune in to see (or look online) for them. There are a number of good Clydesdale commercials they did not show here. Including one that explains the back story of the puppy in the first commercial. They are well thought out and done. Budweiser commercials can make you cry, smile and laugh!

Kabir; there is a documentary that is less than 5 minutes long about the making of the 9/11 Respect commercial. As to the connection between Budweiser and the Clydesdale horses it all started at the end of Prohibition back in 1933. The son of the founder of Anheuser-Bush, gifted his father with a hitch and 6 Clydesdale horses which were used to deliver the first beers posts prohibition to the White House as well as the Governor of New York. This started the Tradition with the Clydesdales, The Hitch/Wagon and the Dalmatian Dogs,who would guard the horses and the wagon while the drivers were delivering the packs of beer to the bar owners. Today the Hitch, The Clydesdale and the Dalmatian Dogs are sort of Ambassadors for Budweiser and there are 3 Teams of that cover the United States making appearances throughout the year at Parades, Sporting Events as well as some Corporate events. Anheuser-Busch owns 5 Farms throughout the United States and they own the Largest group of Clydesdale Horses in the Country. They breed their horses and at the age of 2 years old begin the training of horses for the teams. One of the farms that they own is where the horses retire, but all the Budweiser Clydesdale are fed the same Hay from when they are little throughout their retirement. They get all their Hay from the same Farm, and they even have it shipped on !location to the 3 Clydesdale Teams. Budweiser commercials were like an ongoing saga year after year at the SuperBowl. We tuned in just to see how the horses' story would continue and the latest mishap or incident that had happened. They added donkeys and puppies and a bull and a football game with zebras as refs. These commercials are classics and there are a few other KZbin compilations of the best of the Superbowl Clydesdales...

These were priceless and I actually remember that #1 commercial! Maybe late 60s? They didn’t play my favorite. The Clydesdales are lined up in their corral, opposing teams like in football, while 2 farmers watch. One Clydesdale kicks off a football 🏈 to start their “game “. One farmer asks the other “Do they always do that?” The other farmer replies nonchalantly “No, sometimes they punt “. Loved it! They certainly have creative takes on things 😃

The company has an actual Clydesdale breeding ranch. This last summer the Clydesdales made an overnight stop in our very small Wyoming town. They hitching them up and went down our main thoroughfare in the wagon complete with the Dalmatian and the drivers! Pretty much all the people came out to see them. I got the most amazing pictures of them! Their such beautiful animals

In the mid 70's there was a fire in the malting plant owned by AB here in the Wisconsin city where I live. The barley smoldered for about two weeks with various fire departments taking turns pouring water into the building. In appreciation for their efforts a couple months later AB sent their Clydesdales and they had a short parade through the downtown and a chance for people to see them upclose.

Robin Wiltshire has trained the Clydsdales for commercials for over 20 years. He has really interesting videos of the training. Shire horses are bigger than Clydsdales. The horses kneeled towards where the World Trade Center no longer stood. 9/11/2002.

Clydesdale horses became the mascot of Anheuser-Busch in 1933 after the end of Prohibition when they were used to pull a wagon which dates from 1903 as marketing showcase. Clydesdale horses originated in Scotland where they were used to pull heavy farm equipment and in logging. They measure 6 to 7 feet from the base of the neck. They travel with a Dalmatian dog. In the old days of beer brewing Dalmatians were bread as coach dogs and were trained to guard the wagon and horses when out on deliveries.

There are many very memorable Bud Clydesdale commercials. Usually funny, or sweet (Many with the horses and a puppy). The horses playing football, and standing around waiting while two zebras are rewatching the play on the playback machine . . . .was a fun one. 2002 - The horses are kneeling across the harbor from the WTC site, still makes me tear up. Shire horses are bigger, but the Clydesdales (originally from Scotland) are big. Both are draft horses and were bred to haul very heavy loads. I saw them in person once at a parade, and you can hear the thunder from their hooves before you see them.

Figure most American's will pick the bowing horses as the most memorable, because of the meaning behind it. Clydesdale actually originated in the UK, namely Scotland! (take a bow, UK) "The Clydesdale horse is a native breed of Scotland originating from the Lanarkshire area. Clydesdale trivia - Clydesdales are actually pintos. They need to be carefully bred to prevent them having white spots all over, and often roan out if the colour isn't kept to a minimum. The Budweiser breeding program only uses horses with a certain amount of white on their legs and faces, and I think a spot or two on the belly is allowed, but no more than that.

Bud used a old broken down fridge robot to fight other robots but then the frig door open up showing one cold bottle of bud light in it and all the other robots stop to stare at the bottle then a big hammer cam from the back of the fridge robot and smash all the other robots .

The original Clydesdales were introduced to the public in 1933 to celebrate the repeal of prohibition. They are firmly cemented as the Budweiser brand. Budweiser has 3 teams of 10 horses that travel the country, drive in parades and appear at events like rodeos, festivals, major league playoffs and the Super Bowl. They often do driving demonstrations. Draft horses were originally bred in medieval ages as war horses to carry knights into battle. Eventually they were used for hauling freight, like 18 wheelers do now. You should watch a video showing off how the amazing animals could maneuver in crowded city streets, back up to loading docks, etc. They also compete in weight pulling contests. They can pull up to 8,000 pounds, each. There are several different breeds, all quite specific to the area they were bred and used. The UK has contributed several breeds. The Shire comes from England, as does the Suffolk Punch, which is the oldest breed in the UK. Clydesdales came from Scotland. England also gave us the Cob, which is basically a smaller, but stoutly built pony, such as the Welsh Pony. My great-grandfather had draft horses for farm work and I've always been in love with the gentle giants.

The Budweiser Clydesdales are iconic here. They come every year to appear in our parades during our Rose Festival, and you can go tour their stables while they're here. Absolutely gorgeous and massive horses. The previous commenter who said Belgian drafts are classed as strongest was right, but heart matters too. I saw a pulling contest once that ended up pitting a team of two Belgians against a team of two crossbreds- that's regular, light riding horses crossed with a draft breed. They were owned by a guy who used them for logging work, pulling logs out of the woods. These two teams were the winners of all the previous heats, and though many were cheering for the crossbreed team, we figured the Belgians would win. Bigger, much heavier, and purebred draft. They kept piling weights on the sledges as the two teams kept up with each other, until they had an amazing load, I don't remember how big. The horses were pulling their hearts out, and you could see the crossbreed starting to struggle before this last load. But one of the Belgians just gave up, and lay down in the traces. The crossbreds kept on going, fighting hard, with their owner talking to them, and they went the full distance and won. You should have heard the cheers! Pulling contests are awesome. It seems kind of silly, if you didn't grow up looking upon the Budweiser Clydesdales in reverence, but I remember being overly excited (more than one should be) when we got to see them at an annual festival held in Corpus Christi, Texas (Buccaneer Days). I think I was about 12. Was a very memorable experience. And they have definitely made some of the most emotionally engaging commercials over the years. We used to look forward to the new Budweiser commercial every holiday season. If I remember correctly, they were such a big deal that it would be announced when it was going to air for the first time each year. That was back in the late 70's/early 80's.

Years ago Miami, Florida had the Orange Bowl Parade new years eve. Budweiser Clydesdale was in it every year. Everyone was so excited to see them. There were Budweiser Clydesdales behind where my ex-husband worked on a farm in Ohio - (large Budweiser plant in Cols) - and they are massive! I would bring a couple of apples with me (at the permission of the works at the farm) - and while massive - they are truly gentle giants - they would nuzzle the top of my head - I loved them! There are Belgian draft horses are very large also - used as plow horses - another beautiful but generally gentle horse... It's the thoroughbreds that can be nasty ones! So can Arabians! OH and no the Clydesdales were used to deliver beer on the large cart before there were delivery trucks etc.! They were kneeling in honor of the 9/11 attack at New York City....this was a huge commericial and still brings tears to my eyes.

"Hank's a big boy" - Clydesdale's are freakin' HUGE horses. Adult male Clydesdales measure 17 to 19 hands (1.7-1.9 m or 5.7-6.3 ft.). The tallest recorded being a bit over 22 hands (7.33 ft or 2.2 m). A male's average weight is between 771 to 998 kg (1,700-2,200 lb.). Adult females measure 16 to 18 hands (1.6-1.7 m or 5.3-5.7 ft.). They're the second largest breed of horse in the world, just behind the Shire. Seeing them in person is... an experience. Although the Shires and Clydesdales are up there in terms of strength, you need to look at Belgian Drafts for the strongest.

As a child in 1963 until 1968 I lived just outside St. Louis, Missouri. At that time the only breeding farm for the Budweiser Clydesdale was located in that area. Our land backed right up to Grant's Farm, the Clydesdale farm. I could sit in my bedroom and look out the window and see the horses. One day, my father and I had walked back to the fence and were watching the Clydesdales. A worker came to talk to us and Dad told him we were neighbors and I really loved the horses. The man told Dad to have me there at the fence tomorrow about noon and Dad nodded. The next day, we were there and the man came up, said he had talked to his boss and got permission for Dad and I to visit the barns. I about jumped out of my skin. We went to the barns and I got to pet some of the Clydes and I even got to comb the legs of a couple. I was hooked. Every parade in St. Louis had a team of Clydes in it and we always went to them. Some St. Louis Cardinals baseball games were opened with the Clydesdales making a couple of circuits of the field. Dad later laughed because my love of horses only got worse. 60 years later, I still have horses. But the best memory was combing those legs.

Clydesdales are a breed of draft horse. They’re big and strong, meant to carry heavy loads-specifically timber, among other things, I think. Others include breeds like the Percheron and the Belgian Draft. All large, heavy, powerful breeds meant for strength and torque. Sadly, motorized vehicles have pretty much replaced the use of draft horses across much of the world.

Back when horses were the main way to transport beer to deliver it to bars it was a spectacle to have the wagon show up. Thus Budweiser had a horse that they branded to their wagons. It has remained their icon but is waning since they were bought by a German company.

If you want to see how spectacularly trained the horses are, look for the video of the team having an accident in a show ring, where one of the horses trips and goes down. . . None were hurt, but the people/team jumped in and untangled all the reins & harnesses, but the horses didn't panic and it was amazing to watch!

Those Clydesdales even visit patients who are in hospitals and such. They are huge at about 2000 ponds. I saw a video year or two ago where they took the horses thru a Casino. Even the slots players stopped and watched.

Lots of other people have provided the Background on the Budweiser Clydesdale Hitch (wagon and team), but yes, they have been Budweiser's market symbol since the 1930's. (though the practical use of horse drawn beer wagons predates this.) There are some amazing videos on you tube, both of the many, many commercials made with the horses, and of the hitch and team performing in public. The effort and expense of maintaining and displaying these teams is huge, but they are much admired everywhere they go.

I am old enough to have seen all these in real time. I would date that last one from the 1970s maybe? Also. this list basically showed the very first and very last frog spots. There were dozens of them, for both tv and radio. They tell a whole story and they are hilarious!!

The brewery here in st.louis has tours and it goes through where they have the Clydesdales. And the farm they do the Clydesdales breeding at for all of Budweiser is about 2 hours west of here where I live. If you ever came here, could take you to both

There is a video of what it takes to train a Clydesdale foal and make him beautiful and powerful enough to represent Budweiser beer in commercials. It was mind boggling. It has been years since I saw it, but I can remember that a foal has only one trainer. The trainer is expected to sleep in the barn and never leave the barn when it’s getting close for mother horse to deliver. The bond they make with their trainer begins at moment of birth. I oohh & ahhh the whole video. Apparently, a Clydesdale foal is VERY expensive, I certainly can see why they are beautiful.

Kabir, I'm just taking a wild guess here, but that commercial with the crabs stealing the Bud, then bowing to it behind the rock reminds me of the first Ice Age movie where Sid the sloth has a huge crowd of fellow sloths following him in some group activity, possibly indicating that maybe it came out around the time of the movie. The horses are a breed called Clydesdales, and they're absolutely huge and strong. They weigh around 2000 lbs., so what better to pull a huge wagon with ease?

Strongest horses. Percherons have some of the best pulling power and similarly built breeds. Clydesdales are not as good pulling because they are flashy. They are build more upright which makes them have prettier looking leg motion but is less efficient for strength. This does not make them weak just not quite as good at pulling. *(also older breeding on Percherons is stronger for pulling because they were breed for work and more modern breeding has breed them to be flashier and upright thus reducing their pull strength.) Belgians are also up there

Anhiser Busch company which owns Budweiser actually has a horse breeding program for various types. They enter a number of sponsored horses in various events around the globe. The have a huge presence at the triple crown every year. They also sponsor a number of horses at rodeos and corsage events. Honestly it’s fine as they do what they do. They also have fingers in practically every sport around.

I watched a Neighbor Amish man’s 2 Clydesdale horses pull a 24 foot trailer that was stuck in the mud. We would’ve never gotten it out if it wouldn’t have been for those two horses.

Traditionally, Bud debuted their big commercial during the super bowl and then ran shorter versions through the rest of the year. Except for the one kneeling to where the twin towers had been. That one wasn’t about profits, it was about respect. And they only ran it once.

The use of Clydesdales is an old symbol for the Budweiser company. It is a memory of how beer was delivered for about 150 years at least - huge workhorses pulling a heavy dray from the factory to the town to sell to bars, hotels, private homes, etc.

The Budweiser Clydesdales have a long history promoting the brewery and of course the beer. They were kneeling to the Statue of Liberty. It was a 9/11 tribute. The last one is a true classic.

I'm 72 now. I have a picture of me at 4 sitting on the back of a Budweiser Clydesdale hitched to one of those red wagons with his mates. The horses aren't just random. They are integral to the brand. The kneeling Clydesdales were most probably shortly after 9/11.

Hank will forever be my favorite Clydesdale. I was able to go see them where I live and as I walked past the stalls, I was in awe at how gorgeous these horses are. For some reason, when I got to Hank, I stopped dead in my tracks. He was absolutely beautiful! I just stood there for a minute looking st him. We weren't allowed to pet them and it took everything in me to not reach out and touch his muzzle.

Kneeling horses commemorating 9/11 in front of Statue of Liberty and in the distance absences of Trade Towers on NYC Skyline (this shot is taken from the New Jersey side looking back into Manhattan). Wagons originally delivered product for Anheuser-Busch if St. Louis. Auggie Busch (founder's grandson) would ride the wagon around the interior of Busch Stadium at St. Louis Cardinal's Baseball Opening Game (sometimes notoriously tipsy).

The last one is from the 1970s. I saw that as little kid on TV all the time. It's a classic during the era of jingles. It's catchy. If you've watched CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (I saw it in the theater), when Richard Dreyfuss is reconstructing the mountain in his house and later sees it on his telly, one of the OG Budweiser commercials is playing in the film on the TV. Sign of the times. 🍺

Do a search for "The Horse in Brewing History". Brewery horses were integral to the mass production of beer and a big part of English beer making history. The A-B Clydesdales are a nod to pre-steam engine beer making.
