I'm 76 years old and grew up a a child in the 1940's and 50's with plain out and out racist attitudes all around me. In the late 1950's and in the 60's I moved and entered a school system in a major city with a huge black and Asian communities. I ended up interacting with all these people and my best friend turned out to be a fellow black student. Smart kid. Good student. Was murdered by police in Arizona after we graduated. But we were all kids and when someone threw a party everyone went. Didn't matter the color or race. Then I joined the Navy and you were put together with regardless of race and told to get along. I worked for a Filipino Chief and later a Black Petty Officer. This all taught me tolerance towards others. I later worked in a industry that is predominantly female and many bosses were women. In the end all that crap doesn't matter. People are people!

I have so much respect for people who lived through integration and changed. In the last few years as racists were emboldened, I thanked my family all the time they didn’t raise me in a home where racism was normalized. I know they had to have like consciously change that bc schools integrated when they were kids.

Best to err on the side of caution for people of color (colour 😏) than to risk being on the business end of a noose, swinging from a tree like 'Strange Fruit' (song by jazz singer Billie Holiday). P. @@radbunnie2297 my intention was to more or less don't wave away the racism like it "may or may not happen" Usually 'Top' whatever number lists are based on truth, but whose truth? Your truth may be different from mine; I am 54 years old from Chicago. I have experienced some things in my life, believe it or not. Yes I have seen someone hanging from a tree when I was visiting Mississippi as a teen. Lynched. A brother and his family live in Alabama and talk about how racist it Still is to this day! You don't see mixed groups of friends hanging out, no interracial relationships; white folks will drop the 'n-word' in your face in a heartbeat! There is still a whole lot of intolerance in this country....we've come far, but have we come far enough? Black people are still facing modern day lynchings; not at the end of a rope but by the hands of the law, or "upstanding" civilian citizens just doing their part to keep America safe. People of color, period.....black, Hispanic, Asian, are not safe. Fyi, I am married to a white man and have two biracial kids; I live in Michigan in a rural, majority white area. For the most part MY personal experience has been ok, I thought my kids fared the same, but I didn't find out until they were done with school that the several kids that weren't white weren't strangers to being called whatever derogatory name 'assigned' to their culture. No, I don't interact with black people, only WHITES where I'm at, soooo what I'm saying isn't coming from whatever place you think it is, and as I said, I'm 54-will be 55 this year. I am from the most segregated city in America, Chicago. I love it, but it is what it is....there have always been places there where people of color better not show their faces if they know what's good for them. There are places like that all over the country! My gripe is with telling Kabir that if he came to visit, he'll be just fine, when I think we all know that is irresponsible....if his skin is brown, he automatically has a target on his back when that plane lands in the good ol' US of A. I would advise that one should have a great time, but do be aware of your surroundings and who you meet. A British accent isn't going to shield him and his brown skin from the good ol' boys and their hatred. Ijs. Exercise caution is all.

Using Twitter and Reddit posts to determine if a state is racist is just dumb. Most people would say places with low diversity may harbor more prejudice, but honestly I'd look at communities where laws reflect prejudice openly rather than subtle racism.

I know of no place in America where racism doesn't exist. In some places, its less overt; even the racists have the common decency of being polite. It's less obvious in major cities, at least on a personal level, excluding practices such as redlining. As for you, Kabir, your quiet manner will probably not draw the attention of racists. Don't take KZbin lists too seriously; they're mainly broad generalizations based on subjective criteria. I suspect it wouldn''t be more noticeable than that in the UK.

Yes, this is a terrible metric. Twitter and Reddit users are obviously in no way a representative sample of total population. Old boomers usually only mess with Facebook and their KZbin conspiracy channels. There are literally entire towns in Alabama that don't have electricity. Look it up. Number of hate crimes is a poor measure as well. Imagine thinking that every single act of racism reflects a hate crime conviction lol. Does he think an arrest is made every time someone's grandpa mutters the n word when the gas man comes around, every time Karen tells someone to go back to their country, or every time a cop illegally detains someone for "fitting a description?" I'd guarantee you that states with the laxest hate crime laws are going to be the most racist. All these sundown towns in the South don't even have a minority population because everyone within a certain radius knows full well where minorities are simply not safe. Good luck arguing a hate crime case in some country-ass town in Mississippi where the family lines go back 8 generations and they don't take kindly to out-of-towners. The flimsy "research" this guy did for this video is seriously disrespectful considering what a serious topic this is.

I normally do not comment on KZbin videos as a general rule but since you asked I felt compelled to reply here. No, I honestly and truly would not take this information very seriously. Firstly, the methods and statistics being used to determine if the people in a state are “racist” are pretty ludicrous. Particularly the data regarding language used in tweets. I know it feels like everyone has Twitter these days but actually it is not a significant part of the US population nor would I call the portion of people who do use it particularly representative of the country overall. There are undeniably racial issues in this country but this video is, in my opinion, misguided fear-mongering….not saying they have done so intentionally, I just think this specific video was a miss for them. I’ve only just found your channel recently but have very much enjoyed watching your reactions and hearing your thoughts. Be well!

I've live the majority of my life in the San Francisco, CA Bay Area. But for 4 years I lived in Northern California. Living in Redding was an eye-opener. I did not understand how my husband's family who are native and black , were early settlers from the late 1800's. His grandmother told me about being a young girl herding turkeys and collecting eggs when Mt. Lassen exploded. I was called in from my temp agency to go to a doctor's office to work as a receptionist. I drove over to an old Victorian house converted to medical offices. I knocked on the door and no one answered, but I saw someone peeking out the window. I kept knocking and I could hear someone on the phone. I left to find a pay phone and call my agency. I was told that they worked something else out. I then went to work at a private school in bookkeeping. I was working for a week and the office manager was pleased with my work. When the principal came back from vacation, I suddenly didn't have a job anymore. New neighbors moved in on our block. We introduced ourselves and invited them for a cookout later. 2 hours after that meeting, a Confederate battle flag was hanging in their garage window that faced our home. This was the mild stuff.

Oh that sucks. I noticed this myself. I also live in the San Francisco Bay Area and had only experienced racism in person in my life once, directed at my black friend and I remember being so shocked and angry over it that I got in a fight (got my butt beat so bad…) but to me that was an outlier, something very rare. So it was an even bigger shock to stop by further north on a visit to family in Washington and experience it several times in a single outing at a grocery store. Racist comments at another guy that was shopping near us and then the obligatory, “we speak English here,” directed at me by some lady who then hit my ankle with her cart. I didn’t even do anything, I was shook. Then as we were leaving some guy said something about how if I stopped speaking Spanish I could pass for a “real” American since I don’t even look like a Mexican (actually said “one of those wetback beaners”). It felt like I’d stepped into some weird alternate reality and it was so eye opening for me. I actually told myself several times that I must have misunderstood somehow and that it wasn’t so bad just from the disbelief I felt at the situation. I’m glad I was only passing by. Strangely, I think this may have also been in Redding, I’m not sure since we only passed by on our way to Washington state but we made a stop about an hour later at Mt.Shasta and I think that’s close by.

I am old enough to remember when Boston [and by extension the Commonwealth of which it's the Capital] was famous for bigotry about race, ethnicity/national origin, sexual orientation and religion. When the Anglo-Saxon Protestants were dominant they were bigoted against Irish, Italians, Catholics and non-whites, for example. In the 1960-70 period prejudice against non-white and gay people was a serious problem. The Commonwealth was the first state to abolish black slavery in 1783. Oddly, the same court also used the same state constitutional provision to rule discrimination against same sex marriage illegal in 2005. Given the very large number of international students, US and international tourists, and a very diverse population, Bigotry is, nowadays, socially unacceptable and if people continue to be bigots [and probably are] they hide it. Riding the subway to and from Boston I was daily sharing space with people from every race, color, ethnicity and religion. Most people adjusted to the New England custom of mind your own business and be polite in public. Where I live now, in the suburbs, there is a Coptic Church, a Greek Orthodox Church, a couple of Buddhist temples, a large Hindu center, Muslim centers, a couple of Jewish Synagogues, not to mention the numerous Catholic and Protestant churches. Unfortunately bigotry isn't dead, the only instances of active, hateful bigotry have been verbal attacks by Trumpists on Asians, and property damage on Jewish cemeteries and defacing of an occasional synagogue. Such attacks have occurred in other parts of the US, usually more severe and with loss of life. Some areas are better than others, and that is probably true of every country on the planet.

The problem with state rankings is that they too often encompass a broad range of circumstances, and I think you're likely to see bigger differences within states than between them in most cases, assuming the state isn't racially homogeneous and thinly populated. So if you take a state like Georgia or Texas, you're going to see some pretty wide variations. The metropolitan areas are going to be very different from the small towns, and the small towns will differ from each other considerably as well, depending on their region, their proximity to metropolitan areas, and local history. This is not to say that racism doesn't exist everywhere, because it absolutely does. But even among racists, there's always a factor of "what can I get away with?" in play. And some places apply more social pressure on them than others. (After all, even hardened bigots must get through their grocery shopping without getting into fistfights every time they stand in the checkout line.) For traveling, I'd recommend planning your itinerary and asking people in the region for their suggestions and red flags. People who live in Atlanta, for example, can usually tell you of nearby towns or counties with known reputations, as can people from Houston or Dallas. Additionally, looking up towns on Wikipedia can give you some helpful Census data as a starting point. If a place seems unusually homogenous for the region in which it resides, that's a good cue to ask someone who lives in the general area. (One note on demographics: Think US, not UK, in terms of diversity. UK is still over 85% white, and US is less than 60% white. So an English village that's 90 or 95% white may not necessarily raise the question, but a US town with those numbers absolutely should raise the question.)

As an African-American I've spoken to you a few times about this, and I can verify all that he says to some extent. The truth, as he said, is most older people don't use Reddit, nor do they use Twitter, so it's hard to get a real measure of the atmosphere you'll feel and the things you'll hear in many states. It's unsettling, and in many parts, dangerous, especially after dark. But that is overt racism. What is really far more dangerous is the covert racism in the eastern states that crops its head up at surprising times. As I've said to you, Americans are, in the majority, non-racist, friendly, helping, and accepting people. If you want to travel across country, stick to the major highways and larger cities and you'll be fine. Unfortunately the racism in America is so deeply rooted it would be very difficult to eliminate. Unlike every population of immigrants in this country black people did not come here voluntarily. Since we were brutalized and enslaved there is much animosity on both sides. White racism is based mostly on fear, black prejudice in based on anger. White racism has always been active, black anger has always been reactive. Difficult to reconcile.

As soon as I saw this video I thought "Alabama," "Mississippi" or some southern place. However, I like the South and admire many of their customs (manners) and food. I am in the North and believe me we have a ton of racism here as well but Northern racism differs in that most people would not go up to a person of another color (Black people, Hispanics, Asians are also racist so let's not just say it's White people) and slag them off to their faces. It would be more systematic. I am an educated NY raised person but yes, there is a heck of a lot of people who say "so and so ruined my town by moving in." People unfortunately equate race with "crime" but as Kabir says it's all about education and getting to know people as people, not "race." I think the Brits (my husband is British) have their share of racism as well but people seem more integrated. I don't know as when I lived in the UK briefly everyone was "white" in that area. Let's all be smart and get to know people on a personal level. We all bleed red and we are all humans. PS I lived in Northern New England and PA (Central) and both area were VERY racist.

Just remember: racism as a term applies to any belief, from any angle, that one race is superior to another. Black anti-racist efforts can and sometimes do result in racism on their part. I have personally found race relations in the southern U.S. (primarily Alabama) to be much better than in northern cities. I Live in New Mexico; you guys wouldn't believe the racism expressed here between the Hispanos and the Indigenes, with the Anglos a cherry on top.

Racism requires the power to enforce prejudices. People calling a white man "mayonnaise boy" is not equivalent to the systematic imprisonment and de facto enslavement of Black Americans, or the current practice of indefinite internment in unlivable conditions for undocumented immigrants. You worry about getting your feelings hurt. BIPOC worry about getting murdered by cops or locked away with no hope of release regardless of guilt or innocence, and every day live in a cultural stew of dehumanization because they're not white.

@@Serenity_Dee no it doesnt. That's a BS fake definition made up by psuedo progressives that want to give a free pass to pigeon hole whites as racist by default. The actual definition of racism is "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized." Power has nothing to do with hate or bigotry. Changing definitions is dangerous. If you want to talk about institutional racism that's a different conversation but it's also 100% illegal.

@@Serenity_Dee Racism is believing one race is superior over another. Not this "new" definition that makes everyone else but white people not racist. I was beat up by groups of children multiple times when I was little simply for being white and not being allowed on "their" side of the neighborhood. That's not racist? People all over the internet are allowed to encourage the genocide of white people by saying all white's should be killed, and they're never banned or removed. That's not racist? A professor in the UK was promoted, not fired, for stating getting rid of white people is a good idea. That's not racist? This new idea of what "racism" is is only allowing everyone to be completely racist and even openly talk about and debate the fact that an entire race/skin color shouldn't exist anymore, which would be considered genocide if said about any other race but white people. And that's not helping anything at all. It's just allowing more people to see that it's perfectly fine in society to talk about "removing" an entire race of people, especially for things their ancestors did, and that literally does nothing but make genocide and removing people based on race an idea that people are pondering *again* for some reason, instead of treating it how it should be treated: as racist and horrible.

You're so right. As a person who grew up in Alabama/Georgia state line near a decent-sized city. I was raised by my grandparents, thankfully they never taught me to be racist or to think differently of another race. BUT.. they were taught the wrong terminology. So they would say racist terms around me, but never to another random person nor I don't think they meant it. But when you're taught that a certain skin tone is different or below you.... then that's the outcome. I remember saying things to them growing up correcting their comments. They actually started changing the things they would say. It's all about what we're taught. Skin color is not or should not still be an issue, white privilege is real. It shouldn't be, but it is. I hope one day that changes. Everyone should be treated equally. If you're the best candidate then you're the best. We have to stop looking at race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. People are different can we please just move on. Learn to agree to disagree with someone. It's not hard to be a good person.

Using Twitter inevitably leads to you hearing from a masked populous that already want to be heard for good or bad reasons. Those of us that just go about our lives not feeling like we need to interject our opinions on everything daily, will be completely unaccounted for in his approach of using Twitter data. I like your content, but the channel that made this video you're reacting to used a very ignorant approach in trying to determine the relative prevalence of racist ideologies and feelings. This list is ridiculous and not based on any valid evidence. It is not research, nor is it anything that can be even remotely considered a "study". The person who made the list clearly has an agenda and did not make any effort to be objective. His findings are merely a sloppy cherry-picked mess of subjective social media comments, with an assumption that Twitter and Reddit users represent the values and beliefs of an entire state. The individual who made the list and video is assured of getting high traffic on his video because it is intended to evoke curiosity and emotional responses. He just wants people to click on his video - he's not trying to inform anyone of any useful or valid content. It's crap, wrapped in a provocative title that will generate revenue for the list maker. It is NOT an accurate representation of the degree of racism from state to state.

Do remember that at the start of this video he said despite the prevalence of racism in these states, the racist people are still less common than reasonable ordinary people. His statistics are based only on twitter so they dont tell the whole picture but all of those stats are below 30%. Yes, there are cities and towns in America where you can literally draw a line between where the white people live and where the hispanic or black people live and you should take these kinds of videos *seriously* but idk if thats the same thing as taking it as gospel. Twitter cant tell the whole story and focusing on just the negative parts any story is gonna always make it look more scary than it is. Thats why everyone thinks crime is going up each year when its actually going down, because the news just focuses on it too much and doesn't focus on all the crime that gets prevented. You should be safe to come to most places in America. I don't recommend going to the "most racist town in America" or any other small towns that don't like tourists. A lot of small towns in places like WV will get aggressive even towards white people who stop in their local bar bc they just don't like outsiders. Despite the outside view of America as wealthy as prosperous there are many areas that are nearly third world in some aspects and yet shockingly modern in others. As you saw on a Geography King video there are still areas without electricity, but those are very few, beyond that there are many, many more with minimal education and only 1 source of income for all townspeople, such as coal. which leads to extreme isolationism and nonexistent awareness of the outside worlld. One the other hand, there are many small towns in the AMerican South and other regions that thrive off of tourism and I highly recommend you check some of those out because they are usually welcoming of people of all kinds.

Being one of the black players on the team we were told to not let him go out alone, don’t go off the main roads and don’t be out after dark for any reason. They told us with pride we should be ok if we did this cuz they hadn’t had a racially motivated killing in almost five years. I didn’t really think much about it cuz what they said we pretty much did for the boys anyway until I realized that the hotel service staff had no minority people at all. It depends on where in Wisconsin. The Oneida Tribe in Brown County (next to Green Bay) used it's profits from the casino to bring in industrial companies to hire more Native Americans. Their plan was to eventually only have tribe members working at the casino if they wanted to be there. Moving the rest to better paying industrial jobs with better pay. They had their starting pay set at what you would need to live without help from the Gov for all it's businesses. They are also using the money to buy property that was promised to them by treaty. One property at a time. Eventually they will have bought it all back the way they are going. While they might have a preferential hiring policy they do employ people outside the tribe. They also owned a bunch of storefronts that they earmarked for small start up businesses. Another nice thing they were doing was completely funding a homeless shelter that worked to get people's lives stable and if I remember right a woman's domestic violence center. Don't get me wrong I know full well how racist Wisconsin can be. One of my ancestors was the man who set up the fur trading post for the Hudson Bay Co. He married the daughter of a Potawatomi Chief and built one of the first homes in Milwaukee. My family was on the tribal roll call for a couple generations. Some of them were forced onto the Trail Of Tears. Some family chose to go with them rather than be separated from them by the Gov.

Also, a number of prominent Black American figures (MLK, Rosa Parks, etc.) have Southern roots (also much of the cuisine as well as hip-hop are influenced by Black Americans from the South). But comments plz spare this man lol.
