True, but their are requirements to be eligible for a service dog, the first being that the owner has to have been diagnosed with an ADA recognized disability and the second is that the dog must have received training specific to provide service to that disability. If someone has not been diagnosed with an actual disability, they are not eligible to have a service dog. If the dog has received professional training, then the dog is not a service dog. What I think often happens is that someone has a "comfort" animal and thinks that it is the same as a service animal and so can be taken anywhere. I'm not someone who normally calls for additional government control, but this one area where there should be a registration requirement and licensing. It is not right to putt he burden on a business to figure things out.

There’s quite a bit of difference between having a service dog accompany you, and just bringing your pet along with you to run errands. Here in the US, a service animal is legally allowed to accompany its owner. It’s trained for a specific purpose, with purpose. She had every right to bring the service dog, whereas the woman with the pet dog could’ve been asked to leave the store by management. If your animal is not a service animal or support animal, leave it at home.

Service animals when working should NOT be distracted! If it's busy trying to avoid an untrained pest of a yapping dog crowded in on it n its handler he could miss the thing he's suppose to alert to. For instance a seizure not to mention stressing out the handler because you can't/won't control your dog could trigger a seizure. .I was out of town recently & stayed in a nice hotel that doesn't allow pets. But my service dog not only was allowed but was praised by hotel staff on his manners. Example while I was checking in he paid right beside my feet n did not move. Did not acknowledge children (some showed manners aren't half as good as my dogs) or any of the people walking by. In elevator I said in back prefer corner n he lays between me n wall behind me without moving.

@@lindarobertson1574 I also have a service dog. Tell me, what distracts your dog? Because while mine might notice another dog barking at him, I wouldn't call him "distracted". A squirrel ran past us the other day, he watched it......was he "distracted"? Some kids were kicking a ball around and it rolled past us, several times, and he watched it go by. It actually bounced very close to us a couple of times. In fact, he kind of watched their whole game for a few minutes. Should I have made those kids quit playing so my dog wouldn't be "distracted"? Watch the video of the service dog and the homeless man who is being arrested. Even with all that distraction going on, the dog alerted and tried to do her job. I think you're being very oversensitive about "distractions". We live in the world. Our SDs make it possible for us to participate in the world and have a functional life. Living in the world isn't always perfect. Sometimes kids want to pet the dog, Wanna know a secret? Sometimes I let them. He's never been so distracted that he's missed the cues he's been trained to be on alert for. Relax a little. Don't let the little things stress you out. Enjoy being one of the "lucky ones". I was on a plane and the woman sitting next to me said, "Oh, you're so lucky you get to bring your dog with you on the plane. I have to pay $150 and he has to ride in cargo. What do I need to do so he can ride with me?" I responded, "Well, how I did it was, I was in a car crash where I was hit head on by another car and spent 3 months in the hospital and had to learn to walk again. And then, as a result of the traumatic brain injury I had, I developed a seizure disorder. So.......you could try that." LOL

The problem is that all the woman has to say is that her dog is a service dog as well. There is nothing that proves a dog is indeed a service dog, there isn't even a system in place where they can be registered. The thing that is supposed to be a requirement is that in order to be eligible to have a service dog is that the person qualifies for an ADA disability. Under the ADA, a disability is defined as someone who has “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities” or “a person who has a history or record of such an impairment, or a person who is perceived by others as having such an impairment.” Regardless of the disability, the service dog must be trained to work or perform tasks related to the disability. If a person can't show proof of these things, than they don't meet the requirements to have a service dog.

Service dogs are legally allowed in any location. They are registered with the government to aide their owners. The woman carrying her dog has no such designation and should keep her dog away from the woman with the service dog and keep her mouth shut. The woman with the service is doing nothing wrong. The dog is there to assist her mentally or physically.

The Americans with Disabilities Act does not require certification or registration of service dogs, and unfortunately there are a lot of scams purporting to "register" or "certify" people's pets as service dogs. Under the law a service dog must be trained in tasks or work that mitigate a person's disability, and must be under control and safe for public access. This Karen's dog is obviously not.

Service dogs ARE NOT REGISTERED!!! That's a common misconception. There is no such thing as certification for a service dog. Anyone that tells you their service dog is certified or registered is absolutely lying and has a fake dog. Service dogs are medical equipment. Think of them as a wheelchair. No one could require that you show proof that you need a wheelchair to enter a restaurant, or take your wheelchair into a grocery store. I agree that the woman with the yapping dog is in the wrong. But I have had service dogs for 16 years and not one of them has ever been too distracted by another dog (unless it had actually attacked them) to do their job. Getting an SD is really trendy right now for young women and putting up videos of how they have been victimized to get attention is a big deal. It's rather ridiculous and they give SDs a bad look.

Service dogs are completely different than just taking a pet in a store. Yes, it's a dog, but in this case, it's trained to aid a person before a seizure fully takes hold. Once alerted, the person can take a safe position to minimise risk of injury. The dogs also tend to help mentally when these things happen. And this goes for any dog trained for a specific reason to aid a person

4:27 a true working dog, or medical dog, is pretty much allowed to go anywhere the human goes. A support animal has a few more restrictions. A regular pet has a lot more restrictions. So, whereas the lady with the medical dog may be being a bit hyper-reactive, her dog definitely has more right to be in the store than the other dog. At least if I'm interpreting the situation right, and the other dog is just a pet.

I agree she was hyper reactive; however, not knowing her full condition, a dog distracting her medical service K9 could induce mental health episodes. Hidden disabilities are complicated, and that’s my only reservation when it comes to karen videos. Responsible people learn ways to properly handle their condition in public (for instance, when I feel a ptsd episode starting, I try to find a bathroom to hide in and do calming exercises); however, some situations are just unfortunate. I don’t think I’d personally make a scene during an episode, as attention is the last thing I want… but I could totally see myself getting freaked out and yelling at someone to f*ck off if I couldn’t hide and someone felt the need to get overly invasive cause I’m hyperventilating.

In the United States, service animals are considered necessary medical equipment. Pets are not. You can take a service animal into a place of business just like you could take a wheelchair or an oxygen tank, where that equipment does not cause health or safety concerns or prevent normal business. (An oxygen tank wouldn't be allowed into a business working with open flame, and a service dog wouldn't be allowed into a clean room laboratory, stuff like that.) In the US, the only animals that are legally permitted to be service animals are dogs, and in some cases, miniature horses, though some states have legal protection for additional species. A dog barking at a service dog could distract it from doing vital tasks or work that keep its handler safe and healthy. In the United States, service animals are protected by the ADA, the Americans with Disabilities Act. Service dogs must behave in a way that is safe for those around it. Under the law (U.S. Code of Federal Regulations § 36.202(c)(2)) service dogs (but not their handlers) can be excluded from a business if they are out of control and the handler does not take effective action to control it, or peeing or pooping in the business (aren't housebroken). Therefore, if that Karen (falsely) claims her dog is a service dog too then it can be kicked out. Some businesses allow pets, which is a choice they can make, but this is obviously not that kind of store. Businesses across the US that do allow pets include some home improvement stores like Home Depot and pet stores like PetSmart, which are sometimes used to train service dogs to get used to and practice public access before they are fully trained, and therefore allowed into places that pets are not.

Some people who hate dogs really take it too far. I used to work at a grooming and boarding kennel when i was a teenager. We had a regular come in for a bath, brush and clip. A 9 month old St Bernard. Big, beautiful puppy. One day when his owners were supposed to bring him in, the owners turned up without him. They had been bringing their various dogs there for years and were close with the owner of the place. So they wanted to come in person to let us know that their big, beautiful boy was dead. They had been walking him in the park, ON a leash and they walked close to where a family was playing, a dad, mom and a few kids. Their pup looked at the kids and whined because he wanted to play. Out of nowhere, the dad charges the dog with a baseball bat and beat the pup's brains in. His excuse? "He looked like he was going to attack my children." I don't understand people sometimes 😕

I've known a couple of service dogs through out my life. Service animals go through extensive training for specific medical conditions that their owners have. The first one I knew belonged to a friend, who passed some years back, who had grand mal seizures and a service dog for that medical condition. Her's was trained to detect and alert her before a seizure happened, so she would have time to get on to the floor before the seizure made her fall. Then the dog would get under her head to stop her head from hitting the hard floor when she convulsed. The second belonged to a veteran who had served in the ARMY. His dog was trained to deal with his owners TBI and PTSD. The dog would wake him from his night terrors by turning on the light and then going a sticking his nose on his owner while huffing. When this veteran would have a PTSD attack the dog would get between his owner and whatever triggered the PTSD, leaning into his owner and slowly take his owners hand in the dogs mouth, and the dog would lead him away. Not all dogs have the temperment to be a service dog. Just a thought, but would you consider doing a reaction video to service dogs in action? That would be neat to see.

The dog comes along. On a plane, in a restaurant, while in hospital, the dog must be admitted with me. Real service dogs are v well trained to take care of people with real medical needs. My understanding, via a handler in the UK, is that it’s a terminology difference. Service dogs are working dogs like police and military dogs. The medical equipment type are called Assistance Dogs. They’re also not as utilized as they are in the US.

Service dogs are allowed everywhere including restaurants. Regular dogs are not allowed most places. It’s usually against the rules. Also, by law dogs are supposed to be on leashes. Nonworking dogs tend to put service dogs, and the person in need of them, in danger either due to being a distraction or actually attacking, something which is way more common than it should be.

🐶 🐶 🐶 🐶 There's nothing tough about it.. Working service dogs are allowed in any store/restaurant by law. At least my state. My daughter- in-law has a service dog bc she's an epileptic and the dog let's her know when a seizer is coming. Even in restaurants. The dog lays under the table and you forget he's there bc he's so well trained. But if you walk in somewhere with a pet just bc you want to, you could be asked to leave. So it's not a matter of.. Well the she has her service dog in the store so the other girl should be allowed to too. No sir. The yappy dog has to go and working dog who saves his owner's life gets to stay.

You have to think of a Service Dog like an aid to daily living- such as a cane or a wheelchair. The human has been disabled in some capacity & the human is dependent on their Service Dogs on a daily basis. This does include disabilities that cannot be seen, such as epilepsy. Therefore, they are afforded some legal rights that emotional support & therapy dogs don’t have. A Service Dog can go wherever their human can go, while support & therapy dogs are not. I don’t doubt that emotional support dogs provide comfort & some stability to their human- (I get an instant boost of dopamine at the sight of a dog!) - but they have not been trained to perform a task & as we can all see, they are not always well-behaved (dog & human!) As for the leash thing- I do not know what the bylaws are for different cities, but most would have leashing mandatory except in designated off-leash areas for dogs to run laps around us. I’m sure there are cities that doesn’t make it mandatory provided your dog is well-trained in recall.

I totally agree with you. I was walking my old sweet 16 year old yellow lab and a guy that had a lot of frustrations over something walked in front of me and gave my dog a hard kick, enough to make him yelp. I was nice to the man and called an ambulance so he could get help after I metered out a suitable response.. he spent 6 days in hospital and then had to spend 2 months in prison for animal cruelty. In court the judge gifted my dog with a box of dehydrated chicken strips. My current dog, a german shepherd-rottweiler mix, Let it suffice to say nobody is even thinking about kicking that guy unless they desire a peg leg.

Service dogs are perfectly legal to be in stores and places of business because of the type of training that they have for whatever the issue is for the person. There is no federal law that requires dog leashing in the United States, but most *states* have laws against "dogs at large" which cover loose dogs in general (unfenced or unleashed), and many counties or cities have specific leash laws, so the guy with the dog telling the Karen there is a leash law is no doubt telling the truth. New York in the first clip does have leash laws (New York City Health Code §161.05) requiring all dogs to be on a leash that is no more than 6 feet long in public, but while that Karen is technically right about the law she is just so so so wrong, anyway, because her behavior was abhorrent, put that poor innocent dog in danger, and she's a racist bigot. No excuse for her disgusting behavior. If the dog was running up and attacking her then she has a right to defend herself, but she was only behaving like that because she's a racist karen and a heartless person. *Some* states, counties, or communities have "under control or on a leash" laws so dogs properly trained to heel close to their owners side and under control at all time are allowed, even if not leashed. Other areas require a leash at all times regardless of control of the animal. Many, many leash laws specify a six foot leash, which makes those (extremely dangerous) retractable leashes illegal in may places. (And they should never be used anyway, they are physically dangerous to dogs and humans, people lose fingers to those things, etc.) Under federal law, which takes precedent over state or local law in the United States, service dogs can be unleashed even in places with leash laws if under control and it is necessary to perform their task or work (many trained tasks need freedom of movement).

A service dog is allowed in all places. If the person with the service dog is epileptic the dog will alert her to get in a safe place like on the ground incase she falls down and hits her head, this way she will be safe and won't injure herself. My big brother was epileptic and a seizure killed him. He fell onto his bed face down while having a grand Mal seizure and smothered in the covers. My mom found him. I had moved out 2 weeks earlier and if I was home I could have helped him onto his side so he could breath. I feel guilty every day because I wasn't there. He was such a handsome young man with amazing blue eyes and a Vietnam veteran. Dead at 29 from a damn seizure. Broke my heart.

There are only certain areas in public where your dog needs to be on a leash. For obvious safety reasons like; preventing dogs from hurting others, running into traffic, etcetera. I used to have a pit I’ll mix, who was the nicest dog ever, never hurt anyone, and we would keep him on the leash on walks at all times unless we went to the dog park or dog beach (where they are allowed off the leash). In those areas like dog parks , the owners consent to all dogs being off their leashes and if anything goes wrong they cannot sue the other dog owner or get them in trouble. This is in California by the way I’m not sure about other states. When I was living in China, my neighbor (a guy from Uruguay) let his dog wander the streets during the day while he worked and the dog ended up breaking into a chicken coop with another dog and killed 30 chickens. The owner of course was responsible and had to pay a lot of money for the chickens. I’m in Indonesia now and dog owners let their animals wander all day but they don’t seem so violent, however they get hit by cars a lot. So, this is one of those questions that is hard to decide on where you stand. In my opinion, if you are in a designated area where leashes are not required, then make sure your dog is well behaved enough to be in that environment. I would say the same for the sidewalk but then the question of traffic safety comes into play.

In my state, leashes are required when you're in public with a dog. The only place dogs are allowed off leash is an enclosed dog park. I have a great dane who is well trained. The problem is she's skittish, due to the fact that I got her just before the pandemic so I wasn't able to properly socialize her as a puppy. I have a big enough yard where she can get her running and playing done off leash at home, so whenever we're out in public she is ALWAYS leashed.

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act states that State and local governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public generally must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is allowed to go, and that a person with a disability cannot be asked to remove his service animal from the premises unless: (1) the dog is out of control and the handler does not take effective action to control it or (2) the dog is not housebroken. When there is a legitimate reason to ask that a service animal be removed, staff must offer the person with the disability the opportunity to obtain goods or services without the animal’s presence.

People need to leash their dogs. Not only is it against the law for them to be loose but I’ve had too many people be near me with unleashed dogs and then get upset when my dog barks and their dogs run away (it’s been 5 times with different people). I actually had to kick a dog away (not hard, just kind of lifted it) when he tried to bite mine and the owner got all angry. I told her my dog would have eaten her freaking dachshund if it had actually managed to nip (mine is a German Shepherd and though he’s generally calm and will ignore nips from smaller dogs, he will not tolerate medium to bigger dogs getting aggressive with him). I saw her the next day with her dog still off-leash and my dog remembered her dog and barked. Her dachshund took off. I saw missing posters for several weeks but then I finally saw her with the dog again a few days ago. It is still off leash. I’m happy the dog was fine but I can’t imagine it will be long before the unleashed dogs that I’ve come across with mine leashed, will come across each other and make a mess.

To me, the second video with the service animal is pretty clear. The service animal is a working dog and is allowed by law to be in the store. Other pets have fewer rights and are mostly not allowed in stores unless stated otherwise, especially if they are being a nuisance and distracting a working animal who is doing an incredibly important job like alerting for seizures. The non service animal was not behaving properly and was being a distraction, and the person who owns the animal should have removed the dog from the area. The dog (and the owner) need some behavioral training.

In my area, dogs need to be on a leash. We do not have fences around our property, if the dog is able to roam free and bites the person and the person calls the animal authorities, I believe the dog owner will be cited. The injured person (and if they had a leashed animal) I assume can go through the court system to pay for doctor bills and punitive damages. If the dog is a repeat offender, the animal authorities can take the dog and if it is very dangerous, can have the dog put down. Which it is sad for the dog, it's the owner's fault not to train the dog and leash it than let it run loose. If you have a dog that has problems and not sociable, when walked, besides the leash it is best to add a muzzle on the dog. It keeps the dog biting someone and the other person can tell this is not a friendly dog, keep their hands away. One should always ask permission if they can pet the animal. I am not a dog person and will cross the street if I feel uncomfortable of a dog leashed or unleashed. Most times it is not the dog's fault, and some actually can kill a person/child, it is the irresponsible owner of the animal. If someone abuses an animal, owner and/or stranger, I believe there is a legal penalty to that person. I was surprised that the Karen's in the video actually have a dog with them. I would think they would be nicer to a co-dog owner. Dog owners need to be responsible for their animal, especially clean up after the animal defecates on some else's property. When confronted to these people, the dog owner gets mad at the person who has to live with their dog's waste. The neighborhood can be a peaceful place if people control and teach their animal, follow rules and pick up any waste the dog leaves behind.

A service animal such as a seeing eye dog a seizure alert dog are allowed by law to be in any public building in the United States. An average service animal takes between 18 months and two and a half years to be trained to detect seizures, spikes or severe drops and blood sugar to lead the blind to pick up something for a wheelchair bound person and many other situations. You can usually tell a true service animal by the vest they wear and how they behave they attempt to ignore everything but their handler.

Service dogs are allowed in establishments under the Americans with Disabilities Act. A non-service dog is not allowed in most establishments, particularly those who serve or sell food. A service dog is still allowed in. As to leash laws, it depends on the municipality. Many Karens cite "leash law" when none exists, and in many places leash laws are for specific places, i.e. parks, schools, and sometimes sidewalks. It is much the same with cleaning up after dogs when you take them for a walk, varying from place to place.
