@@johncostello6006 The Space Force has a lot to live up to with that goofy name. Like I'm expecting their highest medal to be something like "The Platinum Galaxy" because in their field actual stars are for noobs and the only cross they know of is the Southern Cross constellation.

US Navy Submarine Service veteran here. I served on a fast attack submarine in the 1980s. It was, as far as I was concerned, the best duty in the Navy. I can tell you that I would not have wanted to serve on a WWII submarine during any war.

Thanks. That is what my dad did on World War Two, in the Pacific. He complained once about being kept down by depth charges and saying, "But we didn't even hit them!" LOL.

17:45 The Naval Cross is the second highest medal in the US military. It is awarded solely to US Navy personnel. It is tied with the Distinguished Service Cross of the Army, the Air Force Cross of the Air Force, and the Coast Guard Cross of the Coast Guard.

The navy cross is not solely awarded to the Navy, Marines receive it as well. However if a service member is awarded the medal while attached to a unit from another service (like a Marine in a Marine battalion attached to an Army division for example) the Marine doing a valorous act could get the distinguished service cross. It goes beyond the awarding authority branch, not branch of the military. There are also 3 different medals of honor as well for each service. The part to look at is how the medal is attached to the ribbon. For instance the Navy version has an anchor.

​@@KNETTWERXThis is in no way meant to be disrespectful but, the US Marine Corp is considered US Navy personnel when decorations are concerned. If you look at the US Marine Corp seal, you will see that it says Department of the Navy.

@ good natured ribbing aside, your statement is both a yes and no. In the past there were a few more medals that were very service specific between the navy and Marines that were not interchangeable. Today the good conduct medal is one of the few service specific service medals in active use. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines all have there own good cookie as it is nicknamed that are only awarded to enlisted men of that particular service. They also have their own criteria. There are only 2 exceptions to this rule. 1 if a person has served in two different branches and earned a good cookie from each branch when they served in it. (For example an army soldier leaves the army after 8 years and joins the Marine Corps, he carries over the army medals over to the Marines including the good conduct.) 2 a sailor is a corpsman and goes to the green side (serves with Marines rather than blue side staying strictly with the navy). When serving on the green side, a corpsman can opt to go Marine Corps regulations. While I was a Marine this was common with our corpsmen. While doing so they adhere to our grooming and pft standards, and in addition to being allowed to wear Marine camouflage uniforms they can wear some of the Marine Corps service uniforms (the green and tan ones). He still will get a Navy version of a good conduct medal, however since he is only allowed service uniforms, he will wear the ribbon in lieu of the medal. (Medals are not authorized on service uniforms.) Officers are not authorized good conduct medals because they are expected to always have good conduct. On the Navy side, instead of marksmanship badges, they have medals which only go to navy personnel. When it comes to qualification badges except marksmanship, (things like scuba, jump wings, etc) a Marine can earn a surface warfare badge when on ship during a float. Unfortunately Marines are not authorized to wear it on the uniform. I know I am starting to go way off topic from the original question asked, however there are a handful of ribbon only awards in each branch that are service specific and not awarded to other branches as well. Be thankful I didn’t bring up the puddle pirates (coast guard) and all of there different service awards that look similar but different.

@KNETTWERX point taken. My first military experience was Louisiana Army National Guard as an infantryman, specifically automatic rifleman. Then I went into the Navy and was a navigation Electronics Technician on a fast attack submarine (USS Tautog SSN 639) based out of Pearl Harbor. I did actually know about the difference in the appearance of the decorations for the various branches.

1.) Medal of Honor; 2.) Distinguished Service Cross [Army] equal to Navy Cross [Navy & Marines] and Air Force Cross; 3.) Distinguished Service Medal [one for each service]; 4.) Silver Star [all services]. Those four are the most important.

Yes, the wars and soldiers since WWII are/were outstanding examples of courage as well, but trench warfare? Bayonets? Ace pilots? Turret gunners in B-52’s with minimal amenities, including no heat (which gave way to the “bomber jacket”? 🤯🤯🤯👏🙌🙏🫶

Yeah if you ever see someone with a Medal of Honor they receive the utmost respect from everyone in the military usually. Most of the time the only way to earn one is do something so crazy for the sake of others with odds of almost certain death. A lot of the posthumous ones awarded are for jumping on grenades and the like which is crazy!

You should definitely check out "The Most Gangster Tanker of WW2" or "Americans Defiant last stand at Lazeranth Ridge" Both groups definitely made a big difference in WW2 for the Americans

I thought for sure the story would be about Captain Ernest Evans, Captain of the USS Johnston in the Battle of Samar/Leyte Gulf. He earned the Medal of Honor for the most bad ass actions I have ever heard of in naval warfare. This was a great story as well, though.

They believed in the post office and the military's ability to get your letters to and from the troops. Also, back then the attitude towards the nazis and Japan was so fierce that the uncertainty was more during the battle not if or when the battle is going to happen.

A female fighter pilot was just awarded the Silver Star along with her squadron mates. Thats the highest award ecer ever for a US female in combat. They downed over 80 drones a few months ago when Iraq sent them to Israel. It was a multonational task force of Americans, British, Isreali, and Jordanian fighter squadrons over several hours.

I don't know the exact rules on the Distinguished Service Cross, but at least through WW2 it was rarely bestowed on civilians for service in time of war. OSS Operatiive Virginia Hall for instance. These days of course she would receive the Distinguished Intelligence Cross. I think an effort is currently underway to find a way to posthumously award her the MoH.
