Presenter Tony Robinson explores Britain's network of ancient tracks in this documentary series. Across the country, there are trackways that have been used for over 5000 years, in this series Robinson uncovers the legends behind them and discusses undiscovered mysteries. In the first episode, the host goes on a journey across Dartmoor, traveling in the footsteps of Britain's greatest detective. While on his trek, Tony discovers a bottomless lake and dives into it before enduring a beastly encounter.

Tony Robinson (Baldrick), how he has turned out. Gaining the title of “Sir” in his unabashed, positive enthusiasm for England and the United Kingdom (warts and all). I like the sentiment about warts and all. We need to address what’s wrong, but appreciate the West still has the best collection of institutions and freedoms despite their problems. It’s why most of the world emigrates there and not vice versa. The whole “we’re horrible” thing is a myopic attitude at best and destructive at worst.

I'd seen bits of this series before, but not all of it. I started watching this afternoon, but have had to take a few breaks, not to mention accidentally skipping forward at one point, forcing me to figure out where I'd skipped from, but I did it, and continued. If life were different, I'd love to be able to walk these trackways myself...but, between age, health, and being poor, it's impossible. This is about as good as I'm going to get, as far as being able to make the trek...and I'm more than satisfied, especially since I've been a fan of Tony's since Black Adder found it's way to the US many years ago. As much as I have wished that Tony had remained an actor, what he became is so much more memorable and interesting. I hope he lives many more years, and makes more stuff like this.

Yes. This 5 hours should be about 10 episodes approximately 30 minutes each. Presently, it's inconsiderate of audience maturation effects such as requiring a kitchen and toilet or sleeping quarters. Wagner's operas were similar requiring audience members to bring a picnic basket to the theater. Please divide this series into episodes.

As a flint hunter myself, I can tell you that flint is only worthwhile when it's freash. It hardens after a time, (certainly 2,000yrs) and is quarried and worked from large pieces called core's, that when freash from it's place in the earth. It actually does harden after a time, and is the sharpest thing I've personally seen in blade form. Surprising that is the case, and very, very useful to ancient man.

10:43 - What's all the dips in the ground of that clearing Sir Tony is walking through? Maybe from groups of people digging down just a short distance in search of something specific in the soil at some time? Or a certain type/consistancy of the soil? Hmm. I wonder, but it does look neat, n it's neat to realize "Wait, this isn't naturally how the ground is, this was all dug up by people at a certain time in the past for whatever reason." Meaning that the very shape and appearance of that whole clearing itself is a part of History on it's own that you can see! - Really helps to not only make one more intrigued or interested in the History of it all but also helps the viewer feel as if they're there in The History of the landscape at the time when it was being dug up or those dips were being made there for whatever reason they were. Quite interesting! Again though, anyone have any idea as to why and when the field was made to look that way? Thanks.

The stone age monuments where stones stand upright are seats I think. Each "Tribe/Great Family/Clan/Peoples" worked to pull their own stone there and place it, even if they agreed each stone came from the same location. Then their stone represented their "Seat at the Meetings". Their leader(s) always knew their stone to stand in front of. Family/tribes knew because these were yearly or bi-yearly gatherings where many came, possibly whole villages or communities. Children grew up begging to attend ofcourse. Knowledge was shared & marriages made. The land was not isolated, everyone walked and Britton is not that huge. These stones represent "seats at the high table" is a common day close description. But it was more civilized than we imagine. Disputes settled, maps drawn in dirt, deaths discussed, marriage proposals, war discussion, new arrivals discussion, trade discussed, trade of goods & ideas, Medical knowledge & herbs, etc........... It makes sense the elders needed to keep order. You spoke with a vote voice if you had a stone you stood in front of. Criminals were maybe/maybe not given trials.

What? We have nothing like this? What US are you living in? They're everywhere. We have immensely more miles of paths like this than in England. Orders of magnitude more rural countryside. The Appalachian trail alone is longer than a bunch of these paths put together and that's just one out of hundreds if not thousands all over the US. In my state alone there's many, one going over 200 miles. If you head out west it's so vast and there's so much uninhabited land and huge national parks you can't even imagine trying to walk all the trails in a million years. I think you're forgetting how huge the US is. The entire island of Scotland and England is the size of just one large state.
