Superb edition. A great mix of teaching and actual running. The pools looked great. Given camera is at a high angle and unrealistic, it's probably not as visible at actual eye level. And anyway, the ice theory is perfectly plausible. Also congratulations on capturing the attention of 6,000+ viewers.

Hi Simon. Nice soldering tutorial and loving the winter stagnant ponds. Just one thing with the running clip at around 24 minutes - the heavy parcels train is hauled by a Class 45 (Peak), not a Class 40 (Whistler)

When I first looked at the ponds, I thought how did he make it look frozen with the white on the edges and all. You have to remember what you did so you can repeat it because it is perfect. Have to say I have never used Tintin but never really had a problem and my method steps is clean, flux, select the correct temperature for the tip, tint, and solder. I love the static grass, and it sets the frozen pond scene perfectly. Great tutorial and video, Jersey Bill

Regarding the cement factory. It is exactly that, a factory producing cement powder from limestone, which is then stored in the large silos before onward bulk delivery, by train or lorry in powder tanks, or vans & curtain siders for bagged cement. There would not be any cement / concrete mixers in or around this factory, as they do not keep sand or aggregate as used when making cement. The cement / concrete mixers would be found at smaller batching plants, where the bulk cement from the factory would be delivered into a silo, with bins to store sand & aggregate, where the cement mixers would be loaded. Hope this is useful info. The layout & what you have done, & are doing is a marvel. Thoroughly enjoying the work & progress updates.

Simon, I wonder if the white bloom could have been a reaction with not quite dry Das clay. I am suggesting this, because it is all round the ponds and in an area of shallows formed from Das, that you showed in the previous video. You didn't show that much superglue being used. Having said that, I think the effect is superb for a polluted industrial area.

Instead of using matt varnish for the static grass, I use bog standard hairspray. Any old spray will do and I haven't found one yet that doesn't work. Give it a try. It is much cheaper for a start.

@@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa1428 The beauty of using hairspray is it comes in 3 hold types. Light, medium and strong. So for static grass, I use a light hold which covers evenly and without noticeable remains. Strong could be used to secure plaster rocks to a surface. Play around and you should notice a difference.

When I used static grass I did the same as you on one section and found it looks the best another section I sprayed too much Peco scenic spray over the first layer and it dried like frost on the grass Great I thought because that was just what I wanted and was going to spray a bit of white over, so although you use varnish you may like to try that out.

You need a soldering iron that has the balls to do the job, if it has not got enough power it heats the job too slowly and this allows the heat to conduct away rather than getting the job up to temp, so perversly you heat more of the job than you need to, get it clean, very clean, fibreglass pencils are good, flux and a iron that will not be "chilled" when it touches the workpiece, in and out quick, maybe add a croc clip to conduct away the heat that is going where you dont want it, and keep your tip clean cleanliness is everything. I have soldered everything from copper boilers to fine pitch electronics mostly professionaly. for over forty years.

Sorry, but if someone at OO or N sets to work with an 80 watt soldering iron, they're going to burn their track to bits. Extremely rapidly. That's really bad advice. I know it works for you, but I would very strongly suggest that viewers look elsewhere for soldering guidance as there is a lot here to want to never do. I wouldn't want to comment but for the fact I don't really want people destroying their track following the advice in good faith.
@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa1428
@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa1428 Ай бұрын
Fair comment I have modelled in OO and used an 80w iron with no ill effects. I did mention with N gauge a 25w iron would work. I guess it’s how long you actually hold the iron onto the track. Anyway appreciate your comments Simon
